défense mobile
English thesaurus
mobile defence
mil., logist.
A form of defensive operations involving manoeuvre, adopted in order to inflict losses on the enemy, to gain time and to preserve friendly forces for subsequent operations. Mobile defence is normally used when forces and weapons are insufficient for positional defence. In the 1970s improvements in armaments, particularly in nuclear and precision-guided weapons and substantially improved manoeuvre capabilities made it necessary to apply the principles of mobile defence mainly in retreat. At the end of the 1980s, mobile defence was officially recognized as a separate form of defence.
