CHAPTER IX
В городе не узнал никто, что половина запорожцев выступила в погоню за татарами.
In the city, no one knew that one-half of the Cossacks had gone in pursuit of the Tatars.
С магистратской башни приметили только часовые, что потянулась часть возов за лес; но думали, что козаки готовились сделать засаду; то же думал и французский инженер.
From the tower of the town hall the sentinel only perceived that a part of the waggons had been dragged into the forest; but it was thought that the Cossacks were preparing an ambush — a view taken by the French engineer also.
А между тем слова кошевого не прошли даром, и в городе оказался недостаток в съестных припасах.
Meanwhile, the Koschevoi’s words proved not unfounded, for a scarcity of provisions arose in the city.
По обычаю прошедших веков войска не разочли, сколько им было нужно.
According to a custom of past centuries, the army did not separate as much as was necessary.
Попробовали сделать вылазку, но половина смельчаков была тут же перебита козаками, а половина прогнана в город ни с чем.
They tried to make a sortie; but half of those who did so were instantly killed by the Cossacks, and the other half driven back into the city with no results.
Жиды, однако же, воспользовались вылазкою и пронюхали всё: куда и зачем отправились запорожцы и с какими военачальниками, и какие именно курени, и сколько их числом, и сколько было оставшихся на месте, и что они думают делать, – словом, чрез несколько уже минут в городе всё узнали.
But the Jews availed themselves of the opportunity to find out everything; whither and why the Zaporozhtzi had departed, and with what leaders, and which particular kurens, and their number, and how many had remained on the spot, and what they intended to do; in short, within a few minutes all was known in the city.
Полковники ободрились и готовились дать сражение.
The besieged took courage, and prepared to offer battle.
Тарас уже видел то по движенью и шуму в городе и расторопно хлопотал, строил, раздавал приказы и наказы, уставил в три таборы курени, обнёсши их возами в виде крепостей, – род битвы, в которой бывали непобедимы запорожцы; двум куреням повелел забраться в засаду; убил часть поля острыми кольями, изломанным оружием, обломками копьев, чтобы при случае нагнать туда неприятельскую конницу.
Taras had already divined it from the noise and movement in the city, and hastened about, making his arrangements, forming his men, and giving orders and instructions. He ranged the kurens in three camps, surrounding them with the waggons as bulwarks — a formation in which the Zaporozhtzi were invincible — ordered two kurens into ambush, and drove sharp stakes, broken guns, and fragments of spears into a part of the plain, with a view to forcing the enemy’s cavalry upon it if an opportunity should present itself.
И когда всё было сделано, как нужно, сказал речь козакам, не для того, чтобы ободрить и освежить их, – знал, что и без того крепки они духом, – а, просто, самому хотелось высказать всё, что было на сердце.
When all was done which was necessary, he made a speech to the Cossacks, not for the purpose of encouraging and freshening up their spirits — he knew their souls were strong without that — but simply because he wished to tell them all he had upon his heart.
„Хочется мне вам сказать, панове, что такое есть наше товарищество.
“I want to tell you, brother gentles, what our brotherhood is.
Вы слышали от отцов и дедов, в какой чести у всех была земля наша:
You have heard from your fathers and grandfathers in what honour our land has always been held by all.
и грекам дала знать себя, и с Царьграда брала червонцы, и города были пышные, и храмы, и князья, князья русского рода, свои князья, а не католические недоверки. Всё взяли бусурманы, всё пропало.
We made ourselves known to the Greeks, and we took gold from Constantinople, and our cities were luxurious, and we had, too, our temples, and our princes — the princes of the Russian people, our own princes, not Catholic unbelievers.
Только остались мы сирые, да, как вдовица после крепкого мужа, сирая так же, как и мы, земля наша!
But the Mussulmans took all; all vanished, and we remained defenceless; yea, like a widow after the death of a powerful husband: defenceless was our land as well as ourselves!
Вот в какое время подали мы, товарищи, руку на братство!
Such was the time, comrades, when we joined hands in a brotherhood:
Вот на чем стоит наше товарищество!
that is what our fellowship consists in.
Нет уз святее товарищества!
There is no more sacred brotherhood.
Отец любит своё дитя, мать любит своё дитя, дитя любит отца и мать. Но это не то, братцы:
The father loves his children, the mother loves her children, the children love their father and mother; but this is not like that, brothers.
любит и зверь своё дитя.
The wild beast also loves its young.
Но породниться родством по душе, а не по крови, может один только человек.
But a man can be related only by similarity of mind and not of blood.
Бывали и в других землях товарищи, но таких, как в Русской земле, не было таких товарищей.
There have been brotherhoods in other lands, but never any such brotherhoods as on our Russian soil.
Вам случалось не одному помногу пропадать на чужбине; видишь, и там люди!
It has happened to many of you to be in foreign lands.
также божий человек, и разговоришься с ним, как с своим; а как дойдёт до того, чтобы поведать сердечное слово, – видишь:
You look: there are people there also, God’s creatures, too; and you talk with them as with the men of your own country. But when it comes to saying a hearty word — you will see. No!
нет, умные люди, да не те; такие же люди, да не те!
they are sensible people, but not the same; the same kind of people, and yet not the same!
Нет, братцы, так любить, как русская душа, – любить не то, чтобы умом или чем другим, а всем, чем дал бог, что ни есть в тебе, а…
No, brothers, to love as the Russian soul loves, is to love not with the mind or anything else, but with all that God has given, all that is within you. Ah!”
сказал Тарас, и махнул рукой, и потряс седою головою, и усом моргнул, и сказал: „
said Taras, and waved his hand, and wiped his grey head, and twitched his moustache, and then went on:
„Нет, так любить никто не может!
“No, no one else can love in that way!
Знаю, подло завелось теперь на земле нашей; думают только, чтобы при них были хлебные стоги, скирды да конные табуны их, да были бы целы в погребах запечатанные меды их!
I know that baseness has now made its way into our land. Men care only to have their ricks of grain and hay, and their droves of horses, and that their mead may be safe in their cellars; they adopt, the devil only knows what Mussulman customs.
Перенимают, чорт знает, какие бусурманские обычаи; гнушаются языком своим; свой с своим не хочет говорить; свой своего продаёт, как продают бездушную тварь на торговом рынке.
They speak scornfully with their tongues. They care not to speak their real thoughts with their own countrymen. They sell their own things to their own comrades, like soulless creatures in the market-place.
Милость чужого короля, да и не короля, а поскудная милость польского магната, который жёлтым чоботом своим бьёт их в морду, дороже для них всякого братства.
The favour of a foreign king, and not even a king, but the poor favour of a Polish magnate, who beats them on the mouth with his yellow shoe, is dearer to them than all brotherhood.
Но у последнего подлюки, каков он ни есть, хоть весь извалялся он в саже и в поклонничестве, есть и у того, братцы, крупица русского чувства.
But the very meanest of these vile men, whoever he may be, given over though he be to vileness and slavishness, even he, brothers, has some grains of Russian feeling; and they will assert themselves some day.
И проснётся оно когда-нибудь, и ударится он, горемычный, об полы руками, схватит себя за голову, проклявши громко подлую жизнь свою, готовый муками искупить позорное дело.
And then the wretched man will beat his breast with his hands; and will tear his hair, cursing his vile life loudly, and ready to expiate his disgraceful deeds with torture.
Пусть же знают они все, что такое значит в Русской земле товарищество!
Let them know what brotherhood means on Russian soil!
Уж если на то пошло, чтобы умирать, – так никому ж из них не доведётся так умирать!..
And if it has come to the point that a man must die for his brotherhood, it is not fit that any of them should die so. No!
Никому, никому!..
none of them.
Не хватит у них на то мышиной натуры их!
It is not a fit thing for their mouse-like natures.”
Так говорил атаман и, когда кончил речь, всё ещё потрясал посеребрившеюся в козацких делах головою.
Thus spoke the hetman; and after he had finished his speech he still continued to shake his head, which had grown grey in Cossack service.
Всех, кто ни стоял, разобрала сильно такая речь, дошед далеко, до самого сердца.
All who stood there were deeply affected by his speech, which went to their very hearts.
Самые старейшие в рядах стали неподвижны, потупив седые головы в землю; слеза тихо накатывалася в старых очах; медленно отирали они её рукавом.
The oldest in the ranks stood motionless, their grey heads drooping.
И потом все, как будто сговорившись, махнули в одно время рукою и потрясли бывалыми головами.
Tears trickled quietly from their aged eyes; they wiped them slowly away with their sleeves, and then all, as if with one consent, waved their hands in the air at the same moment, and shook their experienced heads.
Знать, видно, много напомнил им старый Тарас знакомого и лучшего, что бывает на сердце у человека, умудрённого горем, трудом, удалью и всяким невзгодьем жизни, или хотя и не познавшего их, но много почуявшего молодою жемчужною душою на вечную радость старцам-родителям, родившим его.
For it was evident that old Taras recalled to them many of the best-known and finest traits of the heart in a man who has become wise through suffering, toil, daring, and every earthly misfortune, or, though unknown to them, of many things felt by young, pure spirits, to the eternal joy of the parents who bore them.
А из города уже выступало неприятельское войско, выгремливая в литавры и трубы, и, подбоченившись, выезжали паны, окружённые несметными слугами.
But the army of the enemy was already marching out of the city, sounding drums and trumpets; and the nobles, with their arms akimbo, were riding forth too, surrounded by innumerable servants.
Толстый полковник отдавал приказы.
The stout colonel gave his orders, and they began to advance briskly on the Cossack camps, pointing their matchlocks threateningly.
И стали наступать они тесно на козацкие таборы, грозя, нацеливаясь пищалями, сверкая очами и блеща медными доспехами.
Their eyes flashed, and they were brilliant with brass armour.
Как только увидели козаки, что подошли они на ружейный выстрел, все разом грянули в семипядные пищали и, не перерывая, всё палили они из пищалей.
As soon as the Cossacks saw that they had come within gunshot, their matchlocks thundered all together, and they continued to fire without cessation.
Далеко понеслось громкое хлопанье по всем окрестным полям и нивам, сливаясь в беспрерывный гул; дымом затянуло всё поле, а запорожцы всё палили, не переводя духу:
The detonations resounded through the distant fields and meadows, merging into one continuous roar.
задние только заряжали да передавали передним, наводя изумление на неприятеля, не могшего понять, как стреляли козаки, не заряжая ружей.
The whole plain was shrouded in smoke, but the Zaporozhtzi continued to fire without drawing breath — the rear ranks doing nothing but loading the guns and handing them to those in front, thus creating amazement among the enemy, who could not understand how the Cossacks fired without reloading.
Уже не видно было за великим дымом, обнявшим то и другое воинство, не видно было, как то одного, то другого не ставало в рядах; но чувствовали ляхи, что густо летели пули, и жарко становилось дело; и, когда попятились назад, чтобы посторониться от дыма и оглядеться, то многих не досчитались в рядах своих.
Amid the dense smoke which enveloped both armies, it could not be seen how first one and then another dropped: but the Lyakhs felt that the balls flew thickly, and that the affair was growing hot; and when they retreated to escape from the smoke and see how matters stood, many were missing from their ranks, but only two or three out of a hundred were killed on the Cossack side.
А у козаков, может-быть, другой-третий был убит на всю сотню.
Still the Cossacks went on firing off their matchlocks without a moment’s intermission.
И всё продолжали палить козаки из пищалей, ни на минуту не давая промежутка. Сам иноземный инженер подивился такой, никогда им не виданной тактике, сказавши тут же, при всех: „Вот бравые молодцы-запорожцы!
Even the foreign engineers were amazed at tactics heretofore unknown to them, and said then and there, in the presence of all, “These Zaporozhtzi are brave fellows.
Вот как нужно биться и другим в других землях!
That is the way men in other lands ought to fight.”
И дал совет поворотить тут же на табор пушки.
And they advised that the cannons should at once be turned on the camps.
Тяжело ревнули широкими горлами чугунные пушки; дрогнула, далеко загуливши, земля, и вдвое больше затянуло дымом всё поле.
Heavily roared the iron cannons with their wide throats; the earth hummed and trembled far and wide, and the smoke lay twice as heavy over the plain.
Почуяли запах пороха среди площадей и улиц в дальних и крайних городах.
They smelt the reek of the powder among the squares and streets in the most distant as well as the nearest quarters of the city.
Но нацелившие взяли слишком высоко: раскалённые ядра выгнули слишком высокую дугу. Страшно завизжав по воздуху, перелетели они через головы всего табора и углубились далеко в землю, взорвав и взметнув высоко на воздух чёрную землю.
But those who laid the cannons pointed them too high, and the shot describing too wide a curve flew over the heads of the camps, and buried themselves deep in the earth at a distance, tearing the ground, and throwing the black soil high in the air.
Ухватил себя за волосы французский инженер при виде такого неискусства, и сам принялся наводить пушки, не глядя на то, что жарили и сыпали пулями беспрерывно козаки.
At the sight of such lack of skill the French engineer tore his hair, and undertook to lay the cannons himself, heeding not the Cossack bullets which showered round him.
Тарас видел ещё издали, что беда будет всему Незамайновскому и Стебликивскому куреню, и вскрикнул зычно: „Выбирайтесь скорей из-за возов, и садись всякий на коня!
Taras saw from afar that destruction menaced the whole Nezamaikovsky and Steblikivsky kurens, and gave a ringing shout, “Get away from the waggons instantly, and mount your horses!”
Но не поспели бы сделать то и другое козаки, если бы Остап не ударил в самую середину; выбил фитили у шести пушкарей, у четырёх только не мог выбить.
But the Cossacks would not have succeeded in effecting both these movements if Ostap had not dashed into the middle of the foe and wrenched the linstocks from six cannoneers.
Отогнали его назад ляхи.
But he could not wrench them from the other four, for the Lyakhs drove him back.
А тем временем иноземный капитан сам взял в руку фитиль, чтобы выпалить из величайшей пушки, какой никто из козаков не видывал дотоле.
Meanwhile the foreign captain had taken the lunt in his own hand to fire the largest cannon, such a cannon as none of the Cossacks had ever beheld before.
Страшно глядела она широкою пастью, и тысяча смертей глядело оттуда.
It looked horrible with its wide mouth, and a thousand deaths poured forth from it.
И как грянула она, а за нею следом три другие, четырекратно потрясши глухо-ответную землю, – много нанесли они горя!
And as it thundered, the three others followed, shaking in fourfold earthquake the dully responsive earth. Much woe did they cause.
Не по одному козаку взрыдает старая мать, ударяя себя костистыми руками в дряхлые перси. Не одна останется вдова в Глухове, Немирове, Чернигове и других городах.
For more than one Cossack wailed the aged mother, beating with bony hands her feeble breast; more than one widow was left in Glukhof, Nemirof, Chernigof, and other cities.
Будет, сердечная, выбегать всякий день на базар, хватаясь за всех проходящих, распознавая каждого из них в очи, нет ли между их одного, милейшего всех. Но много пройдёт через город всякого войска, и вечно не будет между ними одного, милейшего всех.
The loving woman will hasten forth every day to the bazaar, grasping at all passers-by, scanning the face of each to see if there be not among them one dearer than all; but though many an army will pass through the city, never among them will a single one of all their dearest be.
Так, как будто и не бывало половины Незамайновского куреня!
Half the Nezamaikovsky kuren was as if it had never been.
Как градом выбивает вдруг всю ниву, где, что полновесный червонец, красовался всякий колос, так их выбило и положило.
As the hail suddenly beats down a field where every ear of grain shines like purest gold, so were they beaten down.
Как же вскинулись козаки!
How the Cossacks hastened thither!
Как схватились все!
How they all started up!
Как закипел куренной атаман Кукубенко, увидевши, что лучшей половины куреня его нет!
How raged Kukubenko, the hetman, when he saw that the best half of his kuren was no more!
Разом вбился он с остальными своими незамайновцами в самую середину. В гневе иссек в капусту первого попавшегося, многих конников сбил с коней, доставши копьем и конника и коня, пробрался к пушкарям и уже отбил одну пушку.
He fought his way with his remaining Nezamaikovtzi to the very midst of the fray, cut down in his wrath, like a cabbage, the first man he met, hurled many a rider from his steed, piercing both horse and man with his lance; and making his way to the gunners, captured some of the cannons.
А уж там, видит, хлопочет уманский куренной атаман, и Степан Гуска уже отбивает главную пушку.
Here he found the hetman of the Oumansky kuren, and Stepan Guska, hard at work, having already seized the largest cannon.
Оставил он тех козаков и поворотил с своими в другую неприятельскую гущу.
He left those Cossacks there, and plunged with his own into another mass of the foe, making a lane through it.
Так, где прошли незамайновцы, – так там и улица, где поворотились – так уж там и переулок!
Where the Nezamaikovtzi passed there was a street; where they turned about there was a square as where streets meet.
Так и видно, как редели ряды, и снопами валились ляхи!
The foemen’s ranks were visibly thinning, and the Lyakhs falling in sheaves.
А у самых возов Вовтузенко, а спереди Черевиченко, а у дальних возов Дёгтяренко, а за ним куренной атаман Вертыхвист.
Beside the waggons stood Vovtuzenko, and in front Tcherevitchenko, and by the more distant ones Degtyarenko; and behind them the kuren hetman, Vertikhvist.
Двух уже шляхтичей поднял на копье Дегтяренко, да напал, наконец, на неподатливого третьего.
Degtyarenko had pierced two Lyakhs with his spear, and now attacked a third, a stout antagonist.
Увёртлив и крепок был лях, пышной сбруей украшен и пятьдесят одних слуг привёл с собою.
Agile and strong was the Lyakh, with glittering arms, and accompanied by fifty followers.
Погнул он крепко Дегтяренка, сбил его на землю и уже, замахнувшись на него саблей, кричал: „Нет из вас, собак-козаков, ни одного, кто бы посмел противустать мне!“ „А вот есть же!
He fell fiercely upon Degtyarenko, struck him to the earth, and, flourishing his sword above him, cried, “There is not one of you Cossack dogs who has dared to oppose me.”
сказал и выступил вперёд Мосий Шило.
“Here is one,” said Mosiy Schilo, and stepped forward.
Сильный был он козак, не раз атаманствовал на море и много натерпелся всяких бед.
He was a muscular Cossack, who had often commanded at sea, and undergone many vicissitudes.
Схватили их турки у самого Трапезонта и всех забрали невольниками на галеры, взяли их по рукам и ногам в железные цепи, не давали по целым неделям пшена и поили противной морской водою.
The Turks had once seized him and his men at Trebizond, and borne them captives to the galleys, where they bound them hand and foot with iron chains, gave them no food for a week at a time, and made them drink sea-water.
Всё выносили и вытерпели бедные невольники, лишь бы не переменять православной веры.
The poor prisoners endured and suffered all, but would not renounce their orthodox faith.
Не вытерпел атаман Мосий Шило, истоптал ногами святой закон, скверною чалмой обвил грешную голову, вошёл в доверенность к паше, стал ключником на корабле и старшим над всеми невольниками.
Their hetman, Mosiy Schilo, could not bear it: he trampled the Holy Scriptures under foot, wound the vile turban about his sinful head, and became the favourite of a pasha, steward of a ship, and ruler over all the galley slaves.
Много опечалились оттого бедные невольники, ибо знали, что если свой продаст веру и пристанет к угнетителям, то тяжелей и горше быть под его рукой, чем под всяким другим нехристом. Так и сбылось.
The poor slaves sorrowed greatly thereat, for they knew that if he had renounced his faith he would be a tyrant, and his hand would be the more heavy and severe upon them.
Всех посадил Мосий Шило в новые цепи по три в ряд, прикрутил им до самых белых костей жестокие веревки; всех перебил по шеям, угощая подзатыльниками.
So it turned out. Mosiy Schilo had them put in new chains, three to an oar. The cruel fetters cut to the very bone; and he beat them upon the back.
И когда турки, обрадовавшись, что достали себе такого слугу, стали пировать и, позабыв закон свой, все перепились, он принёс все шестьдесят четыре ключа и роздал невольникам, чтобы отмыкали себя, бросали бы цепи и кайданы в море, а брали бы на место того сабли да рубили турков.
But when the Turks, rejoicing at having obtained such a servant, began to carouse, and, forgetful of their law, got all drunk, he distributed all the sixty-four keys among the prisoners, in order that they might free themselves, fling their chains and manacles into the sea, and, seizing their swords, in turn kill the Turks.
Много тогда набрали козаки добычи и воротились со славою в отчизну, и долго бандуристы прославляли Мосия Шила.
Then the Cossacks collected great booty, and returned with glory to their country; and the guitar-players celebrated Mosiy Schilo’s exploits for a long time.
Выбрали бы его в кошевые, да был совсем чудной козак.
They would have elected him Koschevoi, but he was a very eccentric Cossack.
Иной раз повершал такое дело, какого мудрейшему не придумать, а в другой, просто, дурь одолевала козака.
At one time he would perform some feat which the most sagacious would never have dreamed of.
Пропил он и прогулял всё, всем задолжал на Сечи и, в прибавку к тому, прокрался, как уличный вор:
At another, folly simply took possession of him, and he drank and squandered everything away, was in debt to every one in the Setch, and, in addition to that, stole like a street thief.
ночью утащил из чужого куреня всю козацкую сбрую и заложил шинкарю.
He carried off a whole Cossack equipment from a strange kuren by night and pawned it to the tavern-keeper.
За такое позорное дело привязали его на базаре к столпу и положили возле дубину, чтобы всякий, по мере сил своих, отвесил ему по удару.
For this dishonourable act they bound him to a post in the bazaar, and laid a club beside him, in order that every one who passed should, according to the measure of his strength, deal him a blow.
Но не нашлось такого из всех запорожцев, кто бы поднял на него дубину, помня прежние его заслуги.
But there was not one Zaporozhetz out of them all to be found who would raise the club against him, remembering his former services.
Таков был козак Мосий Шило.
Such was the Cossack, Mosiy Schilo.
„Так есть же такие, которые бьют вас, собак!
“Here is one who will kill you, dog!”
сказал он, кинувшись на него.
he said, springing upon the Lyakh.
И уж так-то рубились они!
How they hacked away!
И наплечники, и зерцала погнулись у обеих от ударов.
their shoulder-plates and breast-plates bent under their blows.
Разрубил на нем вражий лях железную рубашку, достав лезвеем самого тела:
The hostile Lyakh cut through Schilo’s shirt of mail, reaching the body itself with his blade.
зачервонела козацкая рубашка.
The Cossack’s shirt was dyed purple:
Но не поглядел на то Шило, а замахнулся всей жилистой рукою (тяжёла была коренастая рука) и оглушил его внезапно по голове.
but Schilo heeded it not. He brandished his brawny hand, heavy indeed was that mighty fist, and brought the pommel of his sword down unexpectedly upon his foeman’s head.
Разлетелась медная шапка, зашатался и грянулся лях, а Шило принялся рубить и крестить оглушённого.
The brazen helmet flew into pieces and the Lyakh staggered and fell; but Schilo went on hacking and cutting gashes in the body of the stunned man.
Не добивай, козак, врага, а лучше поворотись назад!
Kill not utterly thine enemy, Cossack: look back rather!
Не поворотился козак назад, и тут же один из слуг убитого хватил его ножом в шею.
The Cossack did not turn, and one of the dead man’s servants plunged a knife into his neck.
Поворотился Шило и уж достал было смельчака, но он пропал в пороховом дыме.
Schilo turned and tried to seize him, but he disappeared amid the smoke of the powder.
Со всех сторон поднялось хлопанье из самопалов.
On all sides rose the roar of matchlocks.
Пошатнулся Шило и почуял, что рана была смертельна.
Schilo knew that his wound was mortal.
Упал он, наложил руку на свою рану и сказал, обратившись к товарищам: „Прощайте, паны братья, товарищи!
He fell with his hand upon his wound, and said, turning to his comrades, “Farewell, brother gentles, my comrades!
Пусть же стоит на вечные времена православная Русская земля и будет ей вечная честь!
may the holy Russian land stand forever, and may it be eternally honoured!”
И зажмурил ослабшие свои очи, и вынеслась козацкая душа из сурового тела.
And as he closed his failing eyes, the Cossack soul fled from his grim body.
А там уже выезжал Задорожний с своими, ломил ряды куренной Вертыхвист и выступал Балабан.
Then Zadorozhniy came forward with his men, Vertikhvist issued from the ranks, and Balaban stepped forth.
„А что, паны?
“What now, gentles?”
сказал Тарас, перекликнувшись с куренными: „
said Taras, calling to the hetmans by name:
„Есть ещё порох в пороховницах?
“there is yet powder in the powder-flasks?
Не ослабела ли козацкая сила?
The Cossack force is not weakened?
Не гнутся ли козаки?
the Cossacks do not yield?”

Низкорослый полковник ударил сбор и велел выкинуть восемь малёванных знамен, чтобы собрать своих, рассыпавшихся далеко по всему полю.
The short colonel beat the assembly, and ordered eight painted standards to be displayed to collect his men, who were scattered over all the plain.
Все бежали ляхи к знамёнам; но не успели они ещё выстроиться, как уже куренной атаман Кукубенко ударил вновь с своими незамайновцами в середину и напал прямо на толстопузого полковника.
All the Lyakhs hastened to the standards. But they had not yet succeeded in ranging themselves in order, when the hetman Kukubenko attacked their centre again with his Nezamaikovtzi and fell straight upon the stout colonel.
Не выдержал полковник и, поворотив коня, пустился вскачь; а Кукубенко далеко гнал его через всё поле, не дав ему соединиться с полком.
The colonel could not resist the attack, and, wheeling his horse about, set out at a gallop; but Kukubenko pursued him for a considerable distance cross the plain and prevented him from joining his regiment.
Завидев то с бокового куреня, Степан Гуска пустился ему навпереймы, с арканом в руке, всю пригнувши голову к лошадиной шее и, улучивши время, с одного раза накинул аркан ему на шею.
Perceiving this from the kuren on the flank, Stepan Guska set out after him, lasso in hand, bending his head to his horse’s neck. Taking advantage of an opportunity, he cast his lasso about his neck at the first attempt.
Весь побагровел полковник, ухватясь за веревку обеими руками и силясь разорвать её, но уже дужий размах вогнал ему в самый живот гибельную пику. Там и остался он, пригвождённый к земле.
The colonel turned purple in the face, grasped the cord with both hands, and tried to break it; but with a powerful thrust Stepan drove his lance through his body, and there he remained pinned to the earth.
Но не сдобровать и Гуске!
But Guska did not escape his fate.
Не успели оглянуться козаки, как уже увидели Степана Гуску, поднятого на четыре копья.
The Cossacks had but time to look round when they beheld Stepan Guska elevated on four spears.
Только и успел сказать бедняк: „Пусть же пропадут все враги, и ликует вечные веки Русская земля!
All the poor fellow succeeded in saying was, “May all our enemies perish, and may the Russian land rejoice forever!”
И там же выпустил дух свой.
and then he yielded up his soul.
Оглянулись козаки, а уж там, сбоку, козак Метелыця угощает ляхов, шеломя того и другого; а уж там, с другого, напирает с своими атаман Невылычкий; а у возов ворочает врага и бьётся Закрутыгуба; а у дальних возов третий Пысаренко отогнал уже целую ватагу.
The Cossacks glanced around, and there was Metelitza on one side, entertaining the Lyakhs by dealing blows on the head to one and another; on the other side, the hetman Nevelitchkiy was attacking with his men; and Zakrutibuga was repulsing and slaying the enemy by the waggons.
А уж там, у других возов, схватились и бьются на самых возах.
The third Pisarenko had repulsed a whole squadron from the more distant waggons; and they were still fighting and killing amongst the other waggons, and even upon them.
„Что паны?
“How now, gentles?”
перекликнулся атаман Тарас, проехавши впереди всех: „
cried Taras, stepping forward before them all:
„Есть ли ещё порох в пороховницах?
“is there still powder in your flasks?
Крепка ли ещё козацкая сила?
Is the Cossack force still strong?
Не гнутся ли ещё козаки?
do the Cossacks yield?”
„Есть ещё, батько, порох в пороховницах; ещё крепка козацкая сила; ещё не гнутся козаки!
“There is still powder in the flasks, father; the Cossack force is still strong: the Cossacks yield not!”
А уж упал с воза Бовдюг.
But Bovdug had already fallen from the waggons; a bullet had struck him just below the heart.
Прямо под самое сердце пришлась ему пуля, но собрал старый весь дух свой и сказал: „Не жаль расстаться с светом.
The old man collected all his strength, and said, “I sorrow not to part from the world.
Дай бог и всякому такой кончины!
God grant every man such an end!
Пусть же славится до конца века Русская земля!
May the Russian land be forever glorious!”
И понеслась к вышинам Бовдюгова душа рассказать давно отшедшим старцам, как умеют биться на Русской земле и, ещё лучше того, как умеют умирать в ней за святую веру.
And Bovdug’s spirit flew above, to tell the old men who had gone on long before that men still knew how to fight on Russian soil, and better still, that they knew how to die for it and the holy faith.
Балабан, куренной атаман, скоро после него грянулся также на землю.
Balaban, hetman of a kuren, soon after fell to the ground also from a waggon.
Три смертельные раны достались ему: от копья, от пули и от тяжёлого палаша.
Three mortal wounds had he received from a lance, a bullet, and a sword.
А был один из доблестнейших козаков; много совершил он под своим атаманством морских походов, но славнее всех был поход к анатольским берегам.
He had been one of the very best of Cossacks, and had accomplished a great deal as a commander on naval expeditions; but more glorious than all the rest was his raid on the shores of Anatolia.
Много набрали они тогда цехинов, дорогой турецкой габы, киндяков и всяких убранств, но мыкнули горе на поворотном пути:
They collected many sequins, much valuable Turkish plunder, caftans, and adornments of every description. But misfortune awaited them on their way back.
попались, сердечные, под турецкие ядра.
They came across the Turkish fleet, and were fired on by the ships.
Как хватило их с корабля, – половина челнов закружилась и перевернулась, потопивши не одного в воду, но привязанные к бокам камыши спасли челны от потопления.
Half the boats were crushed and overturned, drowning more than one; but the bundles of reeds bound to the sides, Cossack fashion, saved the boats from completely sinking.
Балабан отплыл на всех вёслах, стал прямо к солнцу и чрез то сделался невиден турецкому кораблю.
Balaban rowed off at full speed, and steered straight in the face of the sun, thus rendering himself invisible to the Turkish ships.
Всю ночь потом черпаками и шапками выбирали они воду, латая пробитые места; из козацких штанов нарезали парусов, понеслись и убежали от быстрейшего турецкого корабля.
All the following night they spent in baling out the water with pails and their caps, and in repairing the damaged places. They made sails out of their Cossack trousers, and, sailing off, escaped from the fastest Turkish vessels.
И мало того, что прибыли безбедно на Сечу, привезли ещё златошвейную ризу архимандриту Межигорского киевского монастыря и на Покрову, что на Запорожье, оклад из чистого серебра.
And not only did they arrive unharmed at the Setch, but they brought a gold-embroidered vesture for the archimandrite at the Mezhigorsky Monastery in Kief, and an ikon frame of pure silver for the church in honour of the Intercession of the Virgin Mary, which is in Zaporozhe.
И славили долго потом бандуристы удачливость козаков.
The guitar-players celebrated the daring of Balaban and his Cossacks for a long time afterwards.
Поникнул он теперь головою, почуяв предсмертные муки, и тихо сказал: „Сдаётся мне, паны браты, умираю хорошею смертью:
Now he bowed his head, feeling the pains which precede death, and said quietly, “I am permitted, brother gentles, to die a fine death.
семерых изрубил, девятерых копьем исколол. Истоптал конём вдоволь, а уж не припомню, скольких достал пулею.
Seven have I hewn in pieces, nine have I pierced with my lance, many have I trampled upon with my horse’s hoofs; and I no longer remember how many my bullets have slain.
Пусть же цветёт вечно Русская земля!..
May our Russian land flourish forever!”
И отлетела его душа.
and his spirit fled.
Козаки, козаки!
Cossacks, Cossacks!
не выдавайте лучшего цвета вашего войска!
abandon not the flower of your army.
Уже обступили Кукубенка, уже семь человек только осталось изо всего Незамайновского куреня; уже и те отбиваются через силу; уже окровавилась на нем одежда.
Already was Kukubenko surrounded, and seven men only remained of all the Nezamaikovsky kuren, exhausted and with garments already stained with their blood.
Сам Тарас, увидя беду его, поспешил на выручку. Но поздно подоспели козаки:
Taras himself, perceiving their straits, hastened to their rescue; but the Cossacks arrived too late.
уже успело ему углубиться под сердце копье прежде, чем были отогнаны обступившие его враги.
Before the enemies who surrounded him could be driven off, a spear was buried just below Kukubenko’s heart.
Тихо склонился он на руки подхватившим его козакам, и хлынула ручьём молодая кровь, подобно дорогому вину, которое несли в склянном сосуде из погреба неосторожные слуги, подскользнулись тут же у входа и разбили дорогую сулею:
He sank into the arms of the Cossacks who caught him, and his young blood flowed in a stream, like precious wine brought from the cellar in a glass vessel by careless servants, who, stumbling at the entrance, break the rich flask.
всё разлилось на землю вино, и схватил себя за голову прибежавший хозяин, сберегавший его про лучший случай в жизни, чтобы, если приведёт бог на старости лет встретиться с товарищем юности, то чтобы помянуть бы вместе с ним прежнее, иное время, когда иначе и лучше веселился человек…
The wine streams over the ground, and the master, hastening up, tears his hair, having reserved it, in order that if God should grant him, in his old age, to meet again the comrade of his youth, they might over it recall together former days, when a man enjoyed himself otherwise and better than now.
Повёл Кукубенко вокруг себя очами и проговорил: „Благодарю бога, что довелось мне умереть при глазах ваших, товарищи!
Kukubenko cast his eyes around, and said, “I thank God that it has been my lot to die before your eyes, comrades.
Пусть же после нас живут ещё лучшие, чем мы, и красуется вечно любимая Христом Русская земля!
May they live better who come after us than we have lived; and may our Russian land, beloved by Christ, flourish forever!”
И вылетела молодая душа.
and his young spirit fled.
Подняли её ангелы под руки и понесли к небесам.
The angels took it in their arms and bore it to heaven:
Хорошо будет ему там. „
it will be well with him there.
„Садись, Кукубенко, одесную меня!“ скажет ему Христос: „
“Sit down at my right hand, Kukubenko,” Christ will say to him:
„ты не изменил товариществу, бесчестного дела не сделал, не выдал в беде человека, хранил и сберегал мою церковь
“you never betrayed your comrades, you never committed a dishonourable act, you never sold a man into misery, you preserved and defended my church.”
Всех опечалила смерть Кукубенка.
The death of Kukubenko saddened them all.
Уже редели сильно козацкие ряды; многих, многих храбрых уже не досчитывались; но стояли и держались ещё козаки.
The Cossack ranks were terribly thinned. Many brave men were missing, but the Cossacks still stood their ground.
„А что, паны?“ перекликнулся Тарас с оставшимися куренями: „
“How now, gentles,” cried Taras to the remaining kurens:
„Есть ли ещё порох в пороховницах?
“is there still powder in your flasks?
Не иступились ли сабли?
Are your swords blunted?
Не утомилась ли козацкая сила?
Are the Cossack forces wearied?
Не погнулись ли козаки?
Have the Cossacks given way?”
„Достанет ещё, батько, пороху! Годятся ещё сабли; не утомилась козацкая сила; не погнулись ещё козаки!
“There is still an abundance of powder; our swords are still sharp; the Cossack forces are not wearied, and the Cossacks have not yet yielded.”
И рванулись снова козаки так, как бы и потерь никаких не потерпели.
And the Cossacks again strained every nerve, as though they had suffered no loss.
Уже три только куренных атамана осталось в живых.
Only three kuren hetmans still remained alive.
Червонели уже всюду красные реки; высоко гатились мосты из козацких и вражьих тел.
Red blood flowed in streams everywhere; heaps of their bodies and of those of the enemy were piled high.
Взглянул Тарас на небо, а уж по небу потянулась вереница кречетов.
Taras looked up to heaven, and there already hovered a flock of vultures.
Ну, будет кому-то пожива!
Well, there would be prey for some one.
А уж там подняли на копье Метелыцю. Уже голова другого Пысаренка, завертевшись, захлопала очами. Уже подломился и бухнулся о землю начетверо изрубленный Охрим Гуска. „Ну!
And there the foe were raising Metelitza on their lances, and the head of the second Pisarenko was dizzily opening and shutting its eyes; and the mangled body of Okhrim Guska fell upon the ground.
сказал Тарас и махнул платком.
“Now,” said Taras, and waved a cloth on high.
Понял тот знак Остап и ударил сильно, вырвавшись из засады, в конницу.
Ostap understood this signal and springing quickly from his ambush attacked sharply.
Не выдержали сильного напору ляхи, а он их гнал и нагнал прямо на место, где были убиты в землю колья и обломки копьев.
The Lyakhs could not withstand this onslaught; and he drove them back, and chased them straight to the spot where the stakes and fragments of spears were driven into the earth.
Пошли спотыкаться и падать кони и лететь через их головы ляхи.
The horses began to stumble and fall and the Lyakhs to fly over their heads.
А в это время корсунцы, стоявшие последние за возами, увидевши, что уже достанет ружейная пуля, грянули вдруг из самопалов.
At that moment the Korsuntzi, who had stood till the last by the baggage waggons, perceived that they still had some bullets left, and suddenly fired a volley from their matchlocks.
Все сбились и растерялись ляхи, и приободрились козаки. „
The Lyakhs became confused, and lost their presence of mind; and the Cossacks took courage.
„Вот и наша победа!
“The victory is ours!”
раздались со всех сторон запорожские голоса, затрубили в трубы и выкинули победную хоругвь.
rang Cossack voices on all sides; the trumpets sounded and the banner of victory was unfurled.
Везде бежали и крылись разбитые ляхи. „
The beaten Lyakhs ran in all directions and hid themselves.
„Ну, нет, ещё не совсем победа!“ сказал Тарас, глядя на городские стены, и сказал он правду.
“No, the victory is not yet complete,” said Taras, glancing at the city gate; and he was right.
Отворились ворота, и вылетел оттуда гусарский полк, краса всех конных полков.
The gates opened, and out dashed a hussar band, the flower of all the cavalry.
Под всеми всадниками были все, как один, бурые аргамаки. Впереди перед другими понёсся витязь всех бойчее, всех красивее.
Every rider was mounted on a matched brown horse from the Kabardei; and in front rode the handsomest, the most heroic of them all.
Так и летели чёрные волосы из-под медной его шапки; вился завязанный на руке дорогой шарф, шитый руками первой красавицы.
His black hair streamed from beneath his brazen helmet; and from his arm floated a rich scarf, embroidered by the hands of a peerless beauty.
Так и оторопел Тарас, когда увидел, что это был Андрий.
Taras sprang back in horror when he saw that it was Andrii.
А он между тем, объятый пылом и жаром битвы, жадный заслужить навязанный на руку подарок, понёсся, как молодой борзой пёс, красивейший, быстрейший и молодший всех в стае.
And the latter meanwhile, enveloped in the dust and heat of battle, eager to deserve the scarf which had been bound as a gift upon his arm, flew on like a greyhound; the handsomest, most agile, and youngest of all the band.
Атукнул на него опытный охотник, – и он понёсся, пустив прямой чертой по воздуху свои ноги, весь покосившись на бок всем телом, взрывая снег и десять раз выпереживая самого зайца в жару своего бега.
The experienced huntsman urges on the greyhound, and he springs forward, tossing up the snow, and a score of times outrunning the hare, in the ardour of his course. And so it was with Andrii.
Остановился старый Тарас и глядел на то, как он чистил перед собою дорогу, разгонял, рубил и сыпал удары направо и налево.
Old Taras paused and observed how he cleared a path before him, hewing away and dealing blows to the right and the left.
Не вытерпел Тарас и закричал: „
Taras could not restrain himself, but shouted:
„Как?..
“Your comrades!
Своих?..
your comrades!
Своих, чортов сын, своих бьёшь?..
you devil’s brat, would you kill your own comrades?”
Но Андрий не различал, кто пред ним был, свои или другие какие; ничего не видел он.
But Andrii distinguished not who stood before him, comrades or strangers; he saw nothing.
Кудри, кудри он видел, длинные, длинные кудри и подобную речному лебедю грудь, и снежную шею, и плечи, и всё, что создано для безумных поцелуев.
Curls, long curls, were what he saw; and a bosom like that of a river swan, and a snowy neck and shoulders, and all that is created for rapturous kisses.
„Эй, хлопьята!
“Hey there, lads!
заманите мне только его к лесу, заманите мне только его!
only draw him to the forest, entice him to the forest for me!”
кричал Тарас.
shouted Taras.
И вызвалось тот же час тридцать быстрейших козаков заманить его. И, поправив на себе высокие шапки, тут же пустились на конях прямо на перерез гусарам.
Instantly thirty of the smartest Cossacks volunteered to entice him thither; and setting their tall caps firmly spurred their horses straight at a gap in the hussars.
Ударили сбоку на передних, сбили их, отделили от задних, дали по гостинцу тому и другому, а Голокопытенко хватил плашмя по спине Андрия, и в тот же час пустились бежать от них, сколько достало козацкой мочи.
They attacked the front ranks in flank, beat them down, cut them off from the rear ranks, and slew many of them. Golopuitenko struck Andrii on the back with his sword, and immediately set out to ride away at the top of his speed.
Как вскинулся Андрий!
How Andrii flew after him!
Как забунтовала по всем жилкам молодая кровь!
How his young blood coursed through all his veins!
Ударив острыми шпорами коня, во весь дух полетел он за козаками, не глядя назад, не видя, что позади всего только двадцать человек успело поспевать за ним.
Driving his sharp spurs into his horse’s flanks, he tore along after the Cossacks, never glancing back, and not perceiving that only twenty men at the most were following him.
А козаки летели во всю прыть на конях и прямо поворотили к лесу.
The Cossacks fled at full gallop, and directed their course straight for the forest.
Разогнался на коне Андрий и чуть было уже не настигнул Голокопытенка, как вдруг чья-то сильная рука ухватила за повод его коня.
Andrii overtook them, and was on the point of catching Golopuitenko, when a powerful hand seized his horse’s bridle.
Оглянулся Андрий: пред ним Тарас!
Andrii looked; before him stood Taras!
Затрясся он всем телом и вдруг стал бледен… Так школьник, неосторожно задравши своего товарища и получивши за то от него удар линейкою по лбу, вспыхивает, как огонь, бешеный выскакивает из лавки и гонится за испуганным товарищем своим, готовый разорвать его на части, и вдруг наталкивается на входящего в класс учителя: вмиг притихает бешеный порыв, и упадает бессильная ярость.
He trembled all over, and turned suddenly pale, like a student who, receiving a blow on the forehead with a ruler, flushes up like fire, springs in wrath from his seat to chase his comrade, and suddenly encounters his teacher entering the classroom; in the instant his wrathful impulse calms down and his futile anger vanishes.
Подобно ему в один миг пропал, как бы не бывал вовсе, гнев Андрия.
In this wise, in an instant, Andrii’s wrath was as if it had never existed.
И видел он перед собою одного только страшного отца.
And he beheld before him only his terrible father.
„Ну, что ж теперь мы будем делать?
“Well, what are we going to do now?”
сказал Тарас, смотря прямо ему в очи.
said Taras, looking him straight in the eyes.
Но ничего не умел на то сказать Андрий и стоял, утупивши в землю очи.
But Andrii could make no reply to this, and stood with his eyes fixed on the ground.
„Что, сынку, помогли тебе твои ляхи?
“Well, son; did your Lyakhs help you?”
Андрий был безответен.
Andrii made no answer.
„Так продать?
“To think that you should be such a traitor!
продать веру?
that you should betray your faith!
продать своих?
betray your comrades!
Стой же, слезай с коня!
Dismount from your horse!”
Покорно, как ребёнок, слез он с коня и остановился ни жив, ни мёртв перед Тарасом.
Obedient as a child, he dismounted, and stood before Taras more dead than alive.
„Стой и не шевелись!
“Stand still, do not move!
Я тебя породил, я тебя и убью!
I gave you life, I will also kill you!”
сказал Тарас и, отступивши шаг назад, снял с плеча ружье.
said Taras, and, retreating a step backwards, he brought his gun up to his shoulder.
Бледен, как полотно, был Андрий; видно было, как тихо шевелились уста его, и как он произносил чьё-то имя; но это не было имя отчизны, или матери, или братьев – это было имя прекрасной полячки.
Andrii was white as a sheet; his lips moved gently, and he uttered a name; but it was not the name of his native land, nor of his mother, nor his brother; it was the name of the beautiful Pole.
Тарас выстрелил.
Taras fired.
Как хлебный колос, подрезанный серпом, как молодой барашек, почуявший под сердцем смертельное железо, повис он головой и повалился на траву, не сказавши ни одного слова.
Like the ear of corn cut down by the reaping-hook, like the young lamb when it feels the deadly steel in its heart, he hung his head and rolled upon the grass without uttering a word.
Остановился сыноубийца и глядел долго на бездыханный труп.
The murderer of his son stood still, and gazed long upon the lifeless body.
Он был и мёртвый прекрасен: мужественное лицо его, недавно исполненное силы и непобедимого для жён очарованья, всё ещё выражало чудную красоту; чёрные брови, как траурный бархат, оттеняли его побледневшие черты. „
Even in death he was very handsome; his manly face, so short a time ago filled with power, and with an irresistible charm for every woman, still had a marvellous beauty; his black brows, like sombre velvet, set off his pale features.
„Чем бы не козак был?
“Is he not a true Cossack?”
сказал Тарас: „и станом высокий, и чернобровый, и лицо, как у дворянина, и рука была крепка в бою!
said Taras; “he is tall of stature, and black-browed, his face is that of a noble, and his hand was strong in battle!
Пропал, пропал бесславно, как подлая собака!
He is fallen! fallen without glory, like a vile dog!”
„Батько, что ты сделал?
“Father, what have you done?
Это ты убил его?
Was it you who killed him?”
сказал подъехавший в это время Остап.
said Ostap, coming up at this moment.
„Я, сынку“, сказал Тарас, кивнувши головою.
Taras nodded.
Пристально поглядел мёртвому в очи Остап.
Ostap gazed intently at the dead man.
Жалко ему стало брата и проговорил он тут же: „
He was sorry for his brother, and said at once:
„Предадим же, батько, его честно земле, чтобы не поругались над ним враги и не растаскали бы его тело хищные птицы.
“Let us give him honourable burial, father, that the foe may not dishonour his body, nor the birds of prey rend it.”
„Погребут его и без нас!“ сказал Тарас: „будут у него плакальщики и утешницы!
“They will bury him without our help,” said Taras; “there will be plenty of mourners and rejoicers for him.”
И минуты две думал он, кинуть ли его на расхищенье волкам-сыромахам, или пощадить в нем рыцарскую доблесть, которую храбрый должен уважить в чем бы то ни было.
And he reflected for a couple of minutes, whether he should fling him to the wolves for prey, or respect in him the bravery which every brave man is bound to honour in another, no matter whom?
Как видит, скачет к нему на коне Голокопытенко: „
Then he saw Golopuitenko galloping towards them and crying:
„Беда, атаман, окрепли ляхи, прибыла на подмогу свежая сила!..
“Woe, hetman, the Lyakhs have been reinforced, a fresh force has come to their rescue!”
Не успел сказать Голокопытенко, скачет Вовтузенко: „
Golopuitenko had not finished speaking when Vovtuzenko galloped up:
„Беда атаман, новая валит ещё сила!..
“Woe, hetman! a fresh force is bearing down upon us.”
Не успел сказать Вовтузенко, Пысаренко бежит бегом уже без коня: „
Vovtuzenko had not finished speaking when Pisarenko rushed up without his horse:
„Где ты, батьку?
“Where are you, father?
Ищут тебя козаки.
The Cossacks are seeking for you.
Уж убит куренной атаман Невылычкий, Задорожний убит, Черевиченко убит.
Hetman Nevelitchkiy is killed, Zadorozhniy is killed, and Tcherevitchenko:
Но стоят козаки, не хотят умирать, не увидев тебя в очи; хотят, чтобы взглянул ты на них перед смертным часом
but the Cossacks stand their ground; they will not die without looking in your eyes; they want you to gaze upon them once more before the hour of death arrives.”
„На коня, Остап!
“To horse, Ostap!”
сказал Тарас и спешил, чтобы застать ещё козаков, чтобы поглядеть ещё на них, и чтобы они взглянули перед смертью на своего атамана.
said Taras, and hastened to find his Cossacks, to look once more upon them, and let them behold their hetman once more before the hour of death.
Но не выехали они ещё из лесу, а уж неприятельская сила окружила со всех сторон лес, и меж деревьями везде показались всадники с саблями и копьями. „
But before they could emerge from the wood, the enemy’s force had already surrounded it on all sides, and horsemen armed with swords and spears appeared everywhere between the trees.
„Остап!..
“Ostap, Ostap!

кричал Тарас, а сам, схвативши саблю наголо, начал честить первых попавшихся на все боки.
shouted Taras, and grasping his sword he began to cut down all he encountered on every side.
А на Остапа уже наскочило вдруг шестеро; но не в добрый час, видно, наскочило:
But six suddenly sprang upon Ostap. They did it in an unpropitious hour:
с одного полетела голова, другой перевернулся, отступивши; угодило копьем в ребро третьего; четвёртый был поотважней, уклонился головой от пули, и попала в конскую грудь горячая пуля, – вздыбился бешеный конь, грянулся о землю и задавил под собою всадника. „
the head of one flew off, another turned to flee, a spear pierced the ribs of a third; a fourth, more bold, bent his head to escape the bullet, and the bullet striking his horse’s breast, the maddened animal reared, fell back upon the earth, and crushed his rider under him.
„Добре, сынку!..
“Well done, son!
Добре, Остап!..
Well done, Ostap!”
кричал Тарас: „
cried Taras:
„вот я следом за тобою!..
“I am following you.”
А сам всё отбивался от наступавших.
And he drove off those who attacked him.
Рубится и бьётся Тарас, сыплет гостинцы тому и другому на голову, а сам глядит всё вперёд на Остапа, и видит, что уже вновь схватилось с Остапом мало не восьмеро разом. „
Taras hewed and fought, dealing blows at one after another, but still keeping his eye upon Ostap ahead. He saw that eight more were falling upon his son.
„Остап!..
“Ostap, Ostap!
Остап, не поддавайся!..
don’t yield!”
Но уж одолевают Остапа; уже один накинул ему на шею аркан, уже вяжут, уже берут Остапа. „
But they had already overpowered Ostap; one had flung his lasso about his neck, and they had bound him, and were carrying him away.
„Эх, Остап, Остап!..
“Hey, Ostap, Ostap!”
кричал Тарас, пробиваясь к нему, рубя в капусту встречных и поперечных: „
shouted Taras, forcing his way towards him, and cutting men down like cabbages to right and left.
„Эх, Остап, Остап!..
“Hey, Ostap, Ostap!”
Но, как тяжёлым камнем, хватило его самого в ту же минуту.
But something at that moment struck him like a heavy stone.
Всё закружилось и перевернулось в глазах его.
All grew dim and confused before his eyes.
На миг смешанно сверкнули пред ним головы, копья, дым, блески огня, сучья с древесными листьями, мелькнувшие ему в самые очи. И грохнулся он, как подрубленный дуб, на землю. И туман покрыл его очи.
In one moment there flashed confusedly before him heads, spears, smoke, the gleam of fire, tree-trunks, and leaves; and then he sank heavily to the earth like a felled oak, and darkness covered his eyes.
