mil., logist. Weapons that are capable of a high order of destruction and/or of being used in such a manner as to destroy large numbers of people. Weapons of mass destruction can be high explosives or nuclear, chemical, biological, and radiological weapons, but excludes the means of transporting or propelling the weapon where such means is a separable and divisible part of the weapon. FRA 2. Weapons which require limited use of troops and resources, but which are nevertheless capable of causing huge losses and destruction, extending to irreversible environmental damage. The principal distinguishing features of weapons of mass destruction are multiple destructive capability, long-lasting damage extending beyond the actual target, long-term psychological trauma, severe genetic and ecological consequences, difficulties in protecting troops and the population and in eliminating the after-effects of such weapons.Weapons of mass destruction include nuclear, biological and chemical weapons.
