mil., logist.	A form of defensive operations involving manoeuvre, adopted in order to inflict losses on the enemy, to gain time and to preserve friendly forces for subsequent operations. Mobile defence is normally used when forces and weapons are insufficient for positional defence. In the 1970s improvements in armaments, particularly in nuclear and precision-guided weapons and substantially improved manoeuvre capabilities made it necessary to apply the principles of mobile defence mainly in retreat. At the end of the 1980s, mobile defence was officially recognized as a separate form of defence. UKR/NATO 2. For a major unit at tactical level, it consists in combining in the depth retrograde screening actions, delaying operations, blocking actions and armoured counterattacks, the aim of which being abandoning some terrain to the enemy in order to: 1. weaken the opponent by inflicting losses on him while preserving as much as possible the engaged friendly forces; 2. slow-down and often canalize its advance; 3. thus win time and prepare for a new offensive with the engagement of initially reserved forces.
