An arm or branch whose roles are to protect maritime forces, ground troops, the civilian population and coastal installations from attack by enemy surface ships, to defend naval bases and other important maritime installations from the shore, to participate in amphibious and/or airborne landings, to assist ground forces in anti-airborne defense operations and to destroy surface ships. They include the following arms: coastal missile and artillery troops, naval infantry and coastal defense infantry. See also coastal defense. (UKR/NATO)
