The movement of troops from lines or sectors held by them to other positions deeper within their territory in order to form new force groupings for subsequent operations. It may be planned or forced. Whatever the situation, a withdrawal is carried out only on the order or with the authority of the senior commander or officer in charge. The direction chosen must offer the most favourable conditions for the withdrawal of the main body and its concentration on the final or designated line; preservation of combat effectiveness is indispensable.
