Chapter 33

Кити познакомилась и с г-жою Шталь, и знакомство это вместе с дружбою к Вареньке не только имело на неё сильное влияние, но утешало её в её горе.

Kitty made the acquaintance of Madame Stahl too, and this acquaintance, together with her friendship with Varenka, did not merely exercise a great influence on her, it also comforted her in her mental distress.

Она нашла это утешение в том, что ей благодаря этому знакомству открылся совершенно новый мир, не имеющий ничего общего с её прошедшим, мир возвышенный, прекрасный, с высоты которого можно было спокойно смотреть на это прошедшее.

She found this comfort through a completely new world being opened to her by means of this acquaintance, a world having nothing in common with her past, an exalted, noble world, from the height of which she could contemplate her past calmly.

Ей открылось то, что, кроме жизни инстинктивной, которой до сих пор отдавалась Кити, была жизнь духовная.

It was revealed to her that besides the instinctive life to which Kitty had given herself up hitherto there was a spiritual life.

Жизнь эта открывалась религией, но религией, не имеющею ничего общего с тою, которую с детства знала Кити, религией, выражавшейся в обедне и всенощной во Вдовьем доме, где можно было встретить знакомых, и в изучении с батюшкой наизусть славянских текстов;

This life was disclosed in religion, but a religion having nothing in common with that one which Kitty had known from childhood, and which found expression in litanies and all-night services at the Widow’s Home, where one might meet one’s friends, and in learning by heart Slavonic texts with the priest.

это была религия возвышенная, таинственная, связанная с рядом прекрасных мыслей и чувств, в которую не только можно было верить, потому что так велено, но которую можно было любить.

This was a lofty, mysterious religion connected with a whole series of noble thoughts and feelings, which one could do more than merely believe because one was told to, which one could love.

Кити узнала все это не из слов.

Kitty found all this out not from words.

Мадам Шталь говорила с Кити, как с милым ребёнком, на которого любуешься, как на воспоминание своей молодости, и только один раз упомянула о том, что во всех людских горестях утешение даёт лишь любовь и вера и что для сострадания к нам Христа нет ничтожных горестей, и тотчас же перевела разговор на другое.

Madame Stahl talked to Kitty as to a charming child that one looks on with pleasure as on the memory of one’s youth, and only once she said in passing that in all human sorrows nothing gives comfort but love and faith, and that in the sight of Christ’s compassion for us no sorrow is trifling—and immediately talked of other things.

Но Кити в каждом её движении, в каждом слове, в каждом небесном, как называла Кити, взгляде её, в особенности во всей истории её жизни, которую она знала чрез Вареньку, во всем узнавала то, «что было важно» и чего она до сих пор не знала.

But in every gesture of Madame Stahl, in every word, in every heavenly—as Kitty called it—look, and above all in the whole story of her life, which she heard from Varenka, Kitty recognized that something “that was important,” of which, till then, she had known nothing.

Но как ни возвышен был характер мадам Шталь, как ни трогательна вся её история, как ни возвышенна и нежна её речь, Кити невольно подметила в ней такие черты, которые смущали её.

Yet, elevated as Madame Stahl’s character was, touching as was her story, and exalted and moving as was her speech, Kitty could not help detecting in her some traits which perplexed her.

Она заметила, что, расспрашивая про её родных, мадам Шталь улыбнулась презрительно, что было противно христианской доброте.

She noticed that when questioning her about her family, Madame Stahl had smiled contemptuously, which was not in accord with Christian meekness.

Заметила ещё, что, когда она застала у неё католического священника, мадам Шталь старательно держала своё лицо в тени абажура и особенно улыбалась.

She noticed, too, that when she had found a Catholic priest with her, Madame Stahl had studiously kept her face in the shadow of the lamp-shade and had smiled in a peculiar way.

Как ни ничтожны были эти два замечания, они смущали её, и она сомневалась в мадам Шталь.

Trivial as these two observations were, they perplexed her, and she had her doubts as to Madame Stahl.

Но зато Варенька, одинокая, без родных, без друзей, с грустным разочарованием, ничего не желавшая, ничего не жалевшая, была тем самым совершенством, о котором только позволяла себе мечтать Кити.

But on the other hand Varenka, alone in the world, without friends or relations, with a melancholy disappointment in the past, desiring nothing, regretting nothing, was just that perfection of which Kitty dared hardly dream.

На Вареньке она поняла, что стоило только забыть себя и любить других, и будешь спокойна, счастлива и прекрасна.

In Varenka she realized that one has but to forget oneself and love others, and one will be calm, happy, and noble.

И такою хотела быть Кити.

And that was what Kitty longed to be.

Поняв теперь ясно, что было самое важное, Кити не удовольствовалась тем, чтобы восхищаться этим, но тотчас же всею душою отдалась этой новой, открывшейся ей жизни.

Seeing now clearly what was the most important , Kitty was not satisfied with being enthusiastic over it; she at once gave herself up with her whole soul to the new life that was opening to her.

По рассказам Вареньки о том, что делала мадам Шталь и другие, кого она называла, Кити уже составила себе счастливый план будущей жизни.

From Varenka’s accounts of the doings of Madame Stahl and other people whom she mentioned, Kitty had already constructed the plan of her own future life.

Она так же, как и племянница г-жи Шталь, Aline, про которую ей много рассказывала Варенька, будет, где бы ни жила, отыскивать несчастных, помогать им сколько можно, раздавать Евангелие, читать Евангелие больным, преступникам, умирающим.

She would, like Madame Stahl’s niece, Aline, of whom Varenka had talked to her a great deal, seek out those who were in trouble, wherever she might be living, help them as far as she could, give them the Gospel, read the Gospel to the sick, to criminals, to the dying.

Мысль чтения Евангелия преступникам, как это делала Aline, особенно прельщала Кити.

The idea of reading the Gospel to criminals, as Aline did, particularly fascinated Kitty.

Но все это были тайные мечты, которые Кити не высказывала ни матери, ни Вареньке.

But all these were secret dreams, of which Kitty did not talk either to her mother or to Varenka.

Впрочем, в ожидании поры исполнять в больших размерах свои планы, Кити и теперь, на водах, где было столько больных и несчастных, легко нашла случай прилагать свои новые правила, подражая Вареньке.

While awaiting the time for carrying out her plans on a large scale, however, Kitty, even then at the springs, where there were so many people ill and unhappy, readily found a chance for practicing her new principles in imitation of Varenka.

Сначала княгиня замечала только, что Кити находится под сильным влиянием своего engouement, как она называла, к госпоже Шталь и в особенности к Вареньке.

At first the princess noticed nothing but that Kitty was much under the influence of her engouement , as she called it, for Madame Stahl, and still more for Varenka.

Она видела, что Кити не только подражает Вареньке в её деятельности, но невольно подражает ей в её манере ходить, говорить и мигать глазами.

She saw that Kitty did not merely imitate Varenka in her conduct, but unconsciously imitated her in her manner of walking, of talking, of blinking her eyes.

Но потом княгиня заметила, что в дочери, независимо от этого очарования, совершается какой-то серьезный душевный переворот.

But later on the princess noticed that, apart from this adoration, some kind of serious spiritual change was taking place in her daughter.

Княгиня видела, что Кити читает по вечерам французское Евангелие, которое ей подарила госпожа Шталь, чего она прежде не делала;

The princess saw that in the evenings Kitty read a French testament that Madame Stahl had given her—a thing she had never done before;

что она избегает светских знакомых и сходится с больными, находившимися под покровительством Вареньки, и в особенности с одним бедным семейством больного живописца Петрова.

that she avoided society acquaintances and associated with the sick people who were under Varenka’s protection, and especially one poor family, that of a sick painter, Petrov.

Кити, очевидно, гордилась тем, что исполняла в этом семействе обязанности сестры милосердия.

Kitty was unmistakably proud of playing the part of a sister of mercy in that family.

Все это было хорошо, и княгиня ничего не имела против этого, тем более что жена Петрова была вполне порядочная женщина и что принцесса, заметившая деятельность Кити, хвалила её, называя ангелом-утешителем.

All this was well enough, and the princess had nothing to say against it, especially as Petrov’s wife was a perfectly nice sort of woman, and that the German princess, noticing Kitty’s devotion, praised her, calling her an angel of consolation.

Все это было бы очень хорошо, если бы не было излишества.

All this would have been very well, if there had been no exaggeration.

А княгиня видела, что дочь её впадает в крайность, что она и говорила ей. – Il ne faut jamais rien outrer,💬 – говорила она ей.

But the princess saw that her daughter was rushing into extremes, and so indeed she told her.

Но дочь ничего ей не отвечала;

“Il ne faut jamais rien outrer ,” she said to her.

она только думала в душе, что нельзя говорить об излишестве в деле христианства.

Her daughter made her no reply, only in her heart she thought that one could not talk about exaggeration where Christianity was concerned.

Какое же может быть излишество в следовании учению, в котором велено подставить другую щеку, когда ударят по одной, и отдать рубашку, когда снимают кафтан?

What exaggeration could there be in the practice of a doctrine wherein one was bidden to turn the other cheek when one was smitten, and give one’s cloak if one’s coat were taken?

Но княгине не нравилось это излишество, и ещё более не нравилось то, что, она чувствовала, Кити не хотела открыть ей всю свою душу.

But the princess disliked this exaggeration, and disliked even more the fact that she felt her daughter did not care to show her all her heart.

Действительно, Кити таила от матери свои новые взгляды и чувства.

Kitty did in fact conceal her new views and feelings from her mother.

Она таила их не потому, чтоб она не уважала, не любила свою мать, но только потому, что это была её мать.

She concealed them not because she did not respect or did not love her mother, but simply because she was her mother.

Она всякому открыла бы их скорее, чем матери.

She would have revealed them to anyone sooner than to her mother.

–Что-то давно Анна Павловна не была у нас, – сказала раз княгиня про Петрову. –

“How is it Anna Pavlovna’s not been to see us for so long?”

Я звала её.

the princess said one day of Madame Petrova.

А она что-то как будто недовольна.

“I’ve asked her, but she seems put out about something.”

–Нет, я не заметила, maman, – вспыхнув, сказала Кити.

“No, I’ve not noticed it, maman,” said Kitty, flushing hotly.

–Ты давно не была у них?

“Is it long since you went to see them?”

–Мы завтра собираемся сделать прогулку в горы, – отвечала Кити.

“We’re meaning to make an expedition to the mountains tomorrow,” answered Kitty.

–Что же, поезжайте, – отвечала княгиня, вглядываясь в смущенное лицо дочери и стараясь угадать причину её смущения.

“Well, you can go,” answered the princess, gazing at her daughter’s embarrassed face and trying to guess the cause of her embarrassment.

В этот же день Варенька пришла обедать и сообщила, что Анна Павловна раздумала ехать завтра в горы.

That day Varenka came to dinner and told them that Anna Pavlovna had changed her mind and given up the expedition for the morrow.

И княгиня заметила, что Кити опять покраснела.

And the princess noticed again that Kitty reddened.

–Кити, не было ли у тебя чего-нибудь неприятного с Петровыми? –

“Kitty, haven’t you had some misunderstanding with the Petrovs?”

сказала княгиня, когда они остались одни. –

said the princess, when they were left alone.

Отчего она перестала присылать детей и ходить к нам?

“Why has she given up sending the children and coming to see us?”

Кити отвечала, что ничего не было между ними и что она решительно не понимает, почему Анна Павловна как будто недовольна ею.

Kitty answered that nothing had happened between them, and that she could not tell why Anna Pavlovna seemed displeased with her.

Кити ответила совершенную правду.

Kitty answered perfectly truly.

Она не знала причины перемены к себе Анны Павловны, но догадывалась.

She did not know the reason Anna Pavlovna had changed to her, but she guessed it.

Она догадывалась о такой вещи, которую она не могла сказать матери, которой она не говорила и себе.

She guessed at something which she could not tell her mother, which she did not put into words to herself.

Это была одна из тех вещей, которые знаешь, но которые нельзя сказать даже самой себе; так страшно и постыдно ошибиться.

It was one of those things which one knows but which one can never speak of even to oneself, so terrible and shameful would it be to be mistaken.

Опять и опять перебирала она в своём воспоминании все отношения свои к этому семейству.

Again and again she went over in her memory all her relations with the family.

Она вспоминала наивную радость, выражавшуюся на круглом добродушном лице Анны Павловны при их встречах;

She remembered the simple delight expressed on the round, good-humored face of Anna Pavlovna at their meetings;

вспоминала их тайные переговоры о больном, заговоры о том, чтоб отвлечь его от работы, которая была ему запрещена, и увести его гулять;

she remembered their secret confabulations about the invalid, their plots to draw him away from the work which was forbidden him, and to get him out-of-doors;

привязанность меньшого мальчика, называвшего её «моя Кити», не хотевшего без неё ложиться спать.

the devotion of the youngest boy, who used to call her “my Kitty,” and would not go to bed without her.

Как все было хорошо!

How nice it all was!

Потом она вспомнила худую-худую фигуру Петрова с его длинною шеей, в его коричневом сюртуке; его редкие вьющиеся волосы, вопросительные, страшные в первое время для Кити голубые глаза и его болезненные старания казаться бодрым и оживлённым в её присутствии.

Then she recalled the thin, terribly thin figure of Petrov, with his long neck, in his brown coat, his scant, curly hair, his questioning blue eyes that were so terrible to Kitty at first, and his painful attempts to seem hearty and lively in her presence.

Она вспоминала своё усилие в первое время, чтобы преодолеть отвращение, которое она испытывала к нему, как и ко всем чахоточным, и старания, с которыми она придумывала, что сказать ему.

She recalled the efforts she had made at first to overcome the repugnance she felt for him, as for all consumptive people, and the pains it had cost her to think of things to say to him.

Она вспоминала этот робкий умилённый взгляд, которым он смотрел на неё, и странное чувство сострадания и неловкости и потом сознания своей добродетельности, которое она испытывала при этом.

She recalled the timid, softened look with which he gazed at her, and the strange feeling of compassion and awkwardness, and later of a sense of her own goodness, which she had felt at it.

Как все это было хорошо!

How nice it all was!

Но все это было первое время.

But all that was at first.

Теперь же, несколько дней тому назад, все вдруг испортилось.

Now, a few days ago, everything was suddenly spoiled.

Анна Павловна притворно встречала Кити и не переставая наблюдала её и мужа.

Anna Pavlovna had met Kitty with affected cordiality, and had kept continual watch on her and on her husband.

Неужели эта трогательная радость его при её приближении была причиной охлаждения Анны Павловны?

Could that touching pleasure he showed when she came near be the cause of Anna Pavlovna’s coolness?

«Да, – вспоминала она, – что-то было ненатуральное в Анне Павловне и совсем непохожее на её доброту, когда она третьего дня с досадой сказала: „Вот, все дожидался вас, не хотел без вас пить кофе, хотя ослабел ужасно

“Yes,” she mused, “there was something unnatural about Anna Pavlovna, and utterly unlike her good nature, when she said angrily the day before yesterday: ‘There, he will keep waiting for you; he wouldn’t drink his coffee without you, though he’s grown so dreadfully weak.’”

«Да, может быть, и это неприятно ей было, когда я подала ему плед.

“Yes, perhaps, too, she didn’t like it when I gave him the rug.

Все это так просто, но он так неловко это принял, так долго благодарил, что и мне стало неловко.

It was all so simple, but he took it so awkwardly, and was so long thanking me, that I felt awkward too.

И потом этот портрет мой, который он так хорошо сделал.

And then that portrait of me he did so well.

А главное – этот взгляд, смущенный и нежный!

And most of all that look of confusion and tenderness!

Да, да, это так! –

Yes, yes, that’s it!”

с ужасом повторила себе Кити. –

Kitty repeated to herself with horror.
