| Chapter 27 |
Дом был большой, старинный, и Левин, хотя жил один, но топил и занимал весь дом.
| The house was big and old-fashioned, and Levin, though he lived alone, had the whole house heated and used. |
Он знал, что это было глупо, знал, что это даже нехорошо и противно его теперешним новым планам, но дом этот был целый мир для Левина.
| He knew that this was stupid, he knew that it was positively not right, and contrary to his present new plans, but this house was a whole world to Levin. |
Это был мир, в котором жили и умерли его отец и мать.
| It was the world in which his father and mother had lived and died. |
Они жили тою жизнью, которая для Левина казалась идеалом всякого совершенства и которую он мечтал возобновить с своею женой, с своею семьёй.
| They had lived just the life that to Levin seemed the ideal of perfection, and that he had dreamed of beginning with his wife, his family. |
Левин едва помнил свою мать.
| Levin scarcely remembered his mother. |
Понятие о ней было для него священным воспоминанием, и будущая жена его должна была быть в его воображении повторением того прелестного, святого идеала женщины, каким была для него мать.
| His conception of her was for him a sacred memory, and his future wife was bound to be in his imagination a repetition of that exquisite, holy ideal of a woman that his mother had been. |
Любовь к женщине он не только не мог себе представить без брака, но он прежде представлял себе семью, а потом уже ту женщину, которая даст ему семью.
| He was so far from conceiving of love for woman apart from marriage that he positively pictured to himself first the family, and only secondarily the woman who would give him a family. |
Его понятия о женитьбе поэтому не были похожи на понятия большинства его знакомых, для которых женитьба была одним из многих общежитейских дел;
| His ideas of marriage were, consequently, quite unlike those of the great majority of his acquaintances, for whom getting married was one of the numerous facts of social life. |
для Левина это было главным делом жизни, от которого зависело все её счастье.
| For Levin it was the chief affair of life, on which its whole happiness turned. |
И теперь от этого нужно было отказаться!
| And now he had to give up that. |
Когда он вошёл в маленькую гостиную, где всегда пил чай, и уселся в своём кресле с книгою, а Агафья Михайловна принесла ему чаю и со своим обычным: «А я сяду, батюшка», – села на стул у окна, он почувствовал, что, как ни странно это было, он не расстался с своими мечтами и что он без них жить не может.
| When he had gone into the little drawing-room, where he always had tea, and had settled himself in his armchair with a book, and Agafea Mihalovna had brought him tea, and with her usual, “Well, I’ll stay a while, sir,” had taken a chair in the window, he felt that, however strange it might be, he had not parted from his daydreams, and that he could not live without them. |
С ней ли, с другою ли, но это будет.
| Whether with her, or with another, still it would be. |
Он читал книгу, думал о том, что читал, останавливаясь, чтобы слушать Агафью Михайловну, которая без устали болтала; и вместе с тем разные картины хозяйства и будущей семейной жизни без связи представлялись его воображению.
| He was reading a book, and thinking of what he was reading, and stopping to listen to Agafea Mihalovna, who gossiped away without flagging, and yet with all that, all sorts of pictures of family life and work in the future rose disconnectedly before his imagination. |
Он чувствовал, что в глубине его души что-то устанавливалось, умерялось и укладывалось.
| He felt that in the depth of his soul something had been put in its place, settled down, and laid to rest. |
Он слушал разговор Агафьи Михайловны о том, как Прохор Бога забыл и на те деньги, что ему подарил Левин, чтобы лошадь купить, пьет без просыпу и жену избил до смерти;
| He heard Agafea Mihalovna talking of how Prohor had forgotten his duty to God, and with the money Levin had given him to buy a horse, had been drinking without stopping, and had beaten his wife till he’d half killed her. |
он слушал и читал книгу и вспоминал весь ход своих мыслей, возбужденных чтением.
| He listened, and read his book, and recalled the whole train of ideas suggested by his reading. |
Это была книга Тиндаля о теплоте.
| It was Tyndall’s Treatise on Heat . |
Он вспоминал свои осуждения Тиндалю за его самодовольство в ловкости производства опытов и за то, что ему недостаёт философского взгляда.
| He recalled his own criticisms of Tyndall of his complacent satisfaction in the cleverness of his experiments, and for his lack of philosophic insight. |
И вдруг всплывала радостная мысль: «Через два года будут у меня в стаде две голландки, сама Пава ещё может быть жива, двенадцать молодых Беркутовых дочерей, да подсыпать к ним на казовый конец этих трёх – чудо!»
| And suddenly there floated into his mind the joyful thought: “In two years’ time I shall have two Dutch cows; Pava herself will perhaps still be alive, a dozen young daughters of Berkoot and the three others—how lovely!” |
Он опять взялся за книгу.
| He took up his book again. |
«Ну хорошо, электричество и теплота одно и то же;
| “Very good, electricity and heat are the same thing; |
но возможно ли в уравнении для решения вопроса поставить одну величину вместо другой? Нет.
| but is it possible to substitute the one quantity for the other in the equation for the solution of any problem? |
Ну так что же?
| No. Well, then what of it? |
Связь между всеми силами природы и так чувствуется инстинктом…
| The connection between all the forces of nature is felt instinctively.... |
Особенно приятно, как Павина дочь будет уже красно-пегою коровой, и все стадо, в которое п о д с ы п а т ь этих трёх…
| It’s particulary nice if Pava’s daughter should be a red-spotted cow, and all the herd will take after her, and the other three, too! |
Отлично!
| Splendid! |
Выйти с женой и гостями встречать стадо…
| To go out with my wife and visitors to meet the herd.... |
Жена скажет: мы с Костей, как ребёнка, выхаживали эту телку.
| My wife says, ‘Kostya and I looked after that calf like a child.’ ‘ |
Как это может вас так интересовать?
| ‘How can it interest you so much?’ |
скажет гость.
| says a visitor. ‘ |
Все, что его интересует, интересует меня.
| ‘Everything that interests him, interests me.’ |
Но кто она?»
| But who will she be?” |
И он вспоминал то, что произошло в Москве…
| And he remembered what had happened at Moscow.... |
«Ну что же делать?..
| “Well, there’s nothing to be done.... |
Я не виноват.
| It’s not my fault. |
Но теперь все пойдёт по-новому.
| But now everything shall go on in a new way. |
Это вздор, что не допустит жизнь, что прошедшее не допустит.
| It’s nonsense to pretend that life won’t let one, that the past won’t let one. |
Надо биться, чтобы лучше, гораздо лучше жить…»
| One must struggle to live better, much better.”... |
Он приподнял голову и задумался.
| He raised his head, and fell to dreaming. |
Старая Ласка, ещё не совсем переварившая радость его приезда и бегавшая, чтобы полаять на дворе, вернулась, махая хвостом и внося с собой запах воздуха, подошла к нему, подсунула голову под его руку, жалобно подвизгивая и требуя, чтоб он поласкал.
| Old Laska, who had not yet fully digested her delight at his return, and had run out into the yard to bark, came back wagging her tail, and crept up to him, bringing in the scent of fresh air, put her head under his hand, and whined plaintively, asking to be stroked. |
–Только не говорит, – сказала Агафья Михайловна. –
| “There, who’d have thought it?” said Agafea Mihalovna. |
А пёс…
| “The dog now ... |
Ведь понимает же, что хозяин приехал и ему скучно.
| why, she understands that her master’s come home, and that he’s low-spirited.” |
–Отчего же скучно?
| “Why low-spirited?” |
–Да разве я не вижу, батюшка?
| “Do you suppose I don’t see it, sir? |
Пора мне господ знать.
| It’s high time I should know the gentry. |
Сызмальства в господах выросла.
| Why, I’ve grown up from a little thing with them. |
Ничего, батюшка. Было бы здоровье да совесть чиста.
| It’s nothing, sir, so long as there’s health and a clear conscience.” |
Левин пристально смотрел на неё, удивляясь тому, как она поняла его мысли.
| Levin looked intently at her, surprised at how well she knew his thought. |
–Что ж, принесть ещё чайку? –
| “Shall I fetch you another cup?” |
сказала она и, взяв чашку, вышла.
| said she, and taking his cup she went out. |
Ласка все подсовывала голову под его руку.
| Laska kept poking her head under his hand. |
Он погладил её, и она тут же у ног его свернулась кольцом, положив голову на высунувшуюся заднюю лапу.
| He stroked her, and she promptly curled up at his feet, laying her head on a hindpaw. |
И в знак того, что теперь все хорошо и благополучно, она, слегка раскрыв рот, почмокала, лучше уложив около старых зуб липкие губы, затихла в блаженном спокойствии.
| And in token of all now being well and satisfactory, she opened her mouth a little, smacked her lips, and settling her sticky lips more comfortably about her old teeth, she sank into blissful repose. |
Левин внимательно следил за этими последними её движениями.
| Levin watched all her movements attentively. |
«Так-то и я! –
| “That’s what I’ll do,” he said to himself; |
сказал он себе, – так-то и я!
| “that’s what I’ll do! |
Ничего…
| Nothing’s amiss.... |
Все хорошо».
| All’s well.” |
