| Chapter 16 |
Опытный в диалектике Сергей Иванович, не возражая, тотчас же перенёс разговор в другую область.
| Sergey Ivanovitch, being practiced in argument, did not reply, but at once turned the conversation to another aspect of the subject. |
–Да, если ты хочешь арифметическим путём узнать дух народа, то, разумеется, достигнуть этого очень трудно.
| “Oh, if you want to learn the spirit of the people by arithmetical computation, of course it’s very difficult to arrive at it. |
И подача голосов не введена у нас и не может быть введена, потому что не выражает воли народа;
| And voting has not been introduced among us and cannot be introduced, for it does not express the will of the people; |
но для этого есть другие пути.
| but there are other ways of reaching that. |
Это чувствуется в воздухе, это чувствуется сердцем.

Не говорю уже о тех подводных течениях, которые двинулись в стоячем море народа и которые ясны для всякого непредубеждённого человека;

–Лягушки ли, не лягушки, – я газет не издаю и защищать их не хочу;
| “Frogs or no frogs, I’m not the editor of a paper and I don’t want to defend them; |
но я говорю о единомыслии в мире интеллигенции, – сказал Сергей Иванович, обращаясь к брату.
| but I am speaking of the unanimity in the intellectual world,” said Sergey Ivanovitch, addressing his brother. |
Левин хотел отвечать, но старый князь перебил его.
| Levin would have answered, but the old prince interrupted him. |
–Ну, про это единомыслие ещё другое можно сказать, – сказал князь. –
| “Well, about that unanimity, that’s another thing, one may say,” said the prince. |
Вот у меня зятёк, Степан Аркадьич, вы его знаете.
| “There’s my son-in-law, Stepan Arkadyevitch, you know him. |
Он теперь получает место члена от комитета комиссии и ещё что-то, я не помню.
| He’s got a place now on the committee of a commission and something or other, I don’t remember. |
Только делать там нечего – что ж, Долли, это не секрет! –
| Only there’s nothing to do in it—why, Dolly, it’s no secret!— |
а восемь тысяч жалованья.
| !—and a salary of eight thousand. |
Попробуйте, спросите у него, полезна ли его служба, – он вам докажет, что самая нужная.
| You try asking him whether his post is of use, he’ll prove to you that it’s most necessary. |
И он правдивый человек, но нельзя же не верить в пользу восьми тысяч.

–Да, он просил передать о получении места Дарье Александровне, – недовольно сказал Сергей Иванович, полагая, что князь говорит некстати.
| “Yes, he asked me to give a message to Darya Alexandrovna about the post,” said Sergey Ivanovitch reluctantly, feeling the prince’s remark to be ill-timed. |
–Так-то и единомыслие газет.
| “So it is with the unanimity of the press. |
Мне это растолковали: как только война, то им вдвое дохода.
| That’s been explained to me: as soon as there’s war their incomes are doubled. |
Как же им не считать, что судьбы народа и славян…
| How can they help believing in the destinies of the people and the Slavonic races ... |
и все это?

–Я не люблю газет многих, но это несправедливо, – сказал Сергей Иванович.
| “I don’t care for many of the papers, but that’s unjust,” said Sergey Ivanovitch. |
–Я только бы одно условие поставил, – продолжал князь. – Alphonse Karr
| “I would only make one condition,” pursued the old prince. |
прекрасно это писал перед войной с Пруссией. «Вы считаете, что война необходима?
| “Alphonse Karr said a capital thing before the war with Prussia: ‘You consider war to be inevitable? |
Прекрасно.
| Very good. |
Кто проповедует войну – в особый, передовой легион и на штурм, в атаку, впереди всех!»
| Let everyone who advocates war be enrolled in a special regiment of advance-guards, for the front of every storm, of every attack, to lead them all!’” |
–Хороши будут редакторы, – громко засмеявшись, сказал Катавасов, представив себе знакомых ему редакторов в этом избранном легионе.
| “A nice lot the editors would make!” said Katavasov, with a loud roar, as he pictured the editors he knew in this picked legion. |
–Да что ж, они убегут, – сказала Долли, – только помешают.
| “But they’d run,” said Dolly, “they’d only be in the way.” |
–А коли побегут, так сзади картечью или казаков с плетьми поставить, – сказал князь.
| “Oh, if they ran away, then we’d have grape-shot or Cossacks with whips behind them,” said the prince. |
–Да это шутка, и нехорошая шутка, извините меня, князь, – сказал Сергей Иванович.
| “But that’s a joke, and a poor one too, if you’ll excuse my saying so, prince,” said Sergey Ivanovitch. |
–Я не вижу, чтобы это была шутка, это… –
| “I don’t see that it was a joke, that....” |
начал было Левин, но Сергей Иванович перебил его.
| Levin was beginning, but Sergey Ivanovitch interrupted him. |
–Каждый член общества призван делать свойственное ему дело, – сказал он. –
| “Every member of society is called upon to do his own special work,” said he. |
И люди мысли исполняют своё дело, выражая общественное мнение.
| “And men of thought are doing their work when they express public opinion. |
И единодушие и полное выражение общественного мнения есть заслуга прессы и вместе с тем радостное явление.
| And the single-hearted and full expression of public opinion is the service of the press and a phenomenon to rejoice us at the same time. |
Двадцать лет тому назад мы бы молчали, а теперь слышен голос русского народа, который готов встать, как один человек, и готов жертвовать собой для угнетённых братьев;
| Twenty years ago we should have been silent, but now we have heard the voice of the Russian people, which is ready to rise as one man and ready to sacrifice itself for its oppressed brethren; |
это великий шаг и задаток силы.
| that is a great step and a proof of strength.” |
–Но ведь не жертвовать только, а убивать турок, – робко сказал Левин. –
| “But it’s not only making a sacrifice, but killing Turks,” said Levin timidly. |
Народ жертвует и готов жертвовать для своей души, а не для убийства, – прибавил он, невольно связывая разговор с теми мыслями, которые так его занимали.
| “The people make sacrifices and are ready to make sacrifices for their soul, but not for murder,” he added, instinctively connecting the conversation with the ideas that had been absorbing his mind. |
–Как для души?
| “For their soul? |
Это, понимаете, для естественника затруднительное выражение.
| That’s a most puzzling expression for a natural science man, do you understand? |
Что же это такое душа? –
| What sort of thing is the soul?” |
улыбаясь, сказал Катавасов.
| said Katavasov, smiling. |
–Ах, вы знаете!
| “Oh, you know!” |
–Вот, ей-Богу, ни малейшего понятия не имею! –
| “No, by God, I haven’t the faintest idea!” |
с громким смехом сказал Катавасов.
| said Katavasov with a loud roar of laughter. |
– «Я не мир, а меч принёс», говорит Христос, – с своей стороны возразил Сергей Иваныч, просто, как будто самую понятную вещь, приводя то самое место из Евангелия, которое всегда более всего смущало Левина.
| “‘I bring not peace, but a sword,’ says Christ,” Sergey Ivanovitch rejoined for his part, quoting as simply as though it were the easiest thing to understand the very passage that had always puzzled Levin most. |
–Это так точно, – опять повторил старик, стоявший около них, отвечая на случайно брошенный на него взгляд.
| “That’s so, no doubt,” the old man repeated again. He was standing near them and responded to a chance glance turned in his direction. |
–Нет, батюшка, разбиты, разбиты, совсем разбиты! –
| “Ah, my dear fellow, you’re defeated, utterly defeated!” |
весело прокричал Катавасов.
| cried Katavasov good-humoredly. |
Левин покраснел от досады, не на то, что он был разбит, а на то, что он не удержался и стал спорить.
| Levin reddened with vexation, not at being defeated, but at having failed to control himself and being drawn into argument. |
«Нет, мне нельзя спорить с ними, – подумал он, – на них непроницаемая броня, а я голый».
| “No, I can’t argue with them,” he thought; “they wear impenetrable armor, while I’m naked.” |
Он видел, что брата и Катавасова убедить нельзя, и ещё менее видел возможности самому согласиться с ними.
| He saw that it was impossible to convince his brother and Katavasov, and he saw even less possibility of himself agreeing with them. |
То, что они проповедывали, была та самая гордость ума, которая чуть не погубила его.
| What they advocated was the very pride of intellect that had almost been his ruin. |
Он не мог согласиться с тем, что десятки людей, в числе которых и брат его, имели право, на основании того, что им рассказали сотни приходивших в столицы краснобаев-добровольцев, говорить, что они с газетами выражают волю и мысль народа, и такую мысль, которая выражается в мщении и убийстве.
| He could not admit that some dozens of men, among them his brother, had the right, on the ground of what they were told by some hundreds of glib volunteers swarming to the capital, to say that they and the newspapers were expressing the will and feeling of the people, and a feeling which was expressed in vengeance and murder. |
Он не мог согласиться с этим, потому что и не видел выражения этих мыслей в народе, в среде которого он жил, и не находил этих мыслей в себе (а он не мог себя ничем другим считать, как одним из людей, составляющих русский народ), а главное потому, что он вместе с народом не знал, не мог знать того, в чем состоит общее благо, но твердо знал, что достижение этого общего блага возможно только при строгом исполнении того закона добра, который открыт каждому человеку, и потому не мог желать войны и проповедывать для каких бы то ни было общих целей.
| He could not admit this, because he neither saw the expression of such feelings in the people among whom he was living, nor found them in himself (and he could not but consider himself one of the persons making up the Russian people), and most of all because he, like the people, did not know and could not know what is for the general good, though he knew beyond a doubt that this general good could be attained only by the strict observance of that law of right and wrong which has been revealed to every man, and therefore he could not wish for war or advocate war for any general objects whatever. |
Он говорил вместе с Михайлычем и народом, выразившим свою мысль в предании о призвании варягов: «Княжите и владейте нами.
| He said as Mihalitch did and the people, who had expressed their feeling in the traditional invitations of the Varyagi: “Be princes and rule over us. |
Мы радостно обещаем полную покорность.
| Gladly we promise complete submission. |
Весь труд, все унижения, все жертвы мы берём на себя;
| All the labor, all humiliations, all sacrifices we take upon ourselves; |
но не мы судим и решаем».
| but we will not judge and decide.” |
А теперь народ, по словам Сергей Иванычей, отрекался от этого, купленного такой дорогой ценой, права.
| And now, according to Sergey Ivanovitch’s account, the people had foregone this privilege they had bought at such a costly price. |
Ему хотелось ещё сказать, что если общественное мнение есть непогрешимый судья, то почему революция, коммуна не так же законны, как и движение в пользу славян?
| He wanted to say too that if public opinion were an infallible guide, then why were not revolutions and the commune as lawful as the movement in favor of the Slavonic peoples? |
Но все это были мысли, которые ничего не могли решить.
| But these were merely thoughts that could settle nothing. |
Одно несомненно можно было видеть – это то, что в настоящую минуту спор раздражал Сергея Ивановича, и потому спорить было дурно;
| One thing could be seen beyond doubt—that was that at the actual moment the discussion was irritating Sergey Ivanovitch, and so it was wrong to continue it. |
и Левин замолчал и обратил внимание гостей на то, что тучки собрались и что от дождя лучше идти домой.
| And Levin ceased speaking and then called the attention of his guests to the fact that the storm clouds were gathering, and that they had better be going home before it rained. |
