Chapter 27

“He has gone!

It is over!”

Anna said to herself, standing at the window;

и в ответ на этот вопрос впечатления мрака при потухшей свече и страшного сна, сливаясь в одно, холодным ужасом наполнили её сердце.

and in answer to this statement the impression of the darkness when the candle had flickered out, and of her fearful dream mingling into one, filled her heart with cold terror.

«Нет, это не может быть!» –

“No, that cannot be!”

вскрикнула она и, перейдя комнату, крепко позвонила.

she cried, and crossing the room she rang the bell.

Ей так страшно было теперь оставаться одной, что, не дожидаясь прихода человека, она пошла навстречу ему.

She was so afraid now of being alone, that without waiting for the servant to come in, she went out to meet him.

–Узнайте, куда поехал граф, – сказала она.

“Inquire where the count has gone,” she said.

Человек отвечал, что граф поехал в конюшни.

The servant answered that the count had gone to the stable.

–Они приказали доложить, что если вам угодно выехать, то коляска сейчас вернётся.

“His honor left word that if you cared to drive out, the carriage would be back immediately.”

–Хорошо.

“Very good.

Постойте.

Wait a minute.

Сейчас я напишу записку.

I’ll write a note at once.

Пошлите Михайлу с запиской в конюшни.

Send Mihail with the note to the stables.

Поскорее.

Make haste.”

Она села и написала:

She sat down and wrote:

«Я виновата.

“I was wrong.

Вернись домой, надо объясниться.

Come back home; I must explain.

Ради Бога приезжай, мне страшно».

For God’s sake come! I’m afraid.”

Она запечатала и отдала человеку.

She sealed it up and gave it to the servant.

Она боялась оставаться одна теперь и вслед за человеком вышла из комнаты и пошла в детскую.

She was afraid of being left alone now; she followed the servant out of the room, and went to the nursery.

«Что ж, это не то, это не он!

“Why, this isn’t it, this isn’t he!

Где его голубые глаза, милая и робкая улыбка?» –

Where are his blue eyes, his sweet, shy smile?”

была первая мысль её, когда она увидала свою пухлую, румяную девочку с чёрными волосами, вместо Сережи, которого она, при запутанности своих мыслей, ожидала видеть в детской.

was her first thought when she saw her chubby, rosy little girl with her black, curly hair instead of Seryozha, whom in the tangle of her ideas she had expected to see in the nursery.

Девочка, сидя у стола, упорно и крепко хлопала по нем пробкой и бессмысленно глядела на мать двумя смородинами – чёрными глазами.

The little girl sitting at the table was obstinately and violently battering on it with a cork, and staring aimlessly at her mother with her pitch-black eyes.

Ответив англичанке, что она совсем здорова и что завтра уезжает в деревню, Анна подсела к девочке и стала пред нею вертеть пробку с графина.

Answering the English nurse that she was quite well, and that she was going to the country tomorrow, Anna sat down by the little girl and began spinning the cork to show her.

Но громкий, звонкий смех ребёнка и движение, которое она сделала бровью, так живо ей напомнили Вронского, что, удерживая рыдания, она поспешно встала и вышла.

But the child’s loud, ringing laugh, and the motion of her eyebrows, recalled Vronsky so vividly that she got up hurriedly, restraining her sobs, and went away.

«Неужели все кончено?

“Can it be all over?

Нет, это не может быть, – думала она. –

No, it cannot be!” she thought.

Он вернётся.

“He will come back.

Но как он объяснит мне эту улыбку, это оживление после того, как он говорил с ней?

But how can he explain that smile, that excitement after he had been talking to her?

Но и не объяснит, все-таки поверю.

But even if he doesn’t explain, I will believe.

Если я не поверю, то мне остаётся одно, – а я не хочу».

If I don’t believe, there’s only one thing left for me, and I can’t.”

Она посмотрела на часы.

She looked at her watch.

Прошло двенадцать минут.

Twenty minutes had passed.

«Теперь уж он получил записку и едет назад.

“By now he has received the note and is coming back.

Недолго, ещё десять минут…

Not long, ten minutes more....

Но что, если он не приедет?

But what if he doesn’t come?

Нет, этого не может быть.

No, that cannot be.

Надо, чтобы он не видел меня с заплаканными глазами.

He mustn’t see me with tear-stained eyes.

Я пойду умоюсь.

I’ll go and wash.

Да, да, чесалась ли я, или нет?» –

Yes, yes; did I do my hair or not?”

спросила она себя.

she asked herself.

И не могла вспомнить.

And she could not remember.

Она ощупала голову рукой.

She felt her head with her hand.

«Да, я причёсана, но когда, решительно не помню».

“Yes, my hair has been done, but when I did it I can’t in the least remember.”

Она даже не верила своей руке и подошла к трюмо, чтоб увидать, причёсана ли она в самом деле, или нет?

She could not believe the evidence of her hand, and went up to the pier-glass to see whether she really had done her hair.

Она была причёсана и не могла вспомнить, когда она это делала.

She certainly had, but she could not think when she had done it.

«Кто это?» –

“Who’s that?”

думала она, глядя в зеркало на воспалённое лицо со странно блестящими глазами, испуганно смотревшими на неё.

she thought, looking in the looking-glass at the swollen face with strangely glittering eyes, that looked in a scared way at her.

«Да это я», – вдруг поняла она, и, оглядывая себя всю, она почувствовала вдруг на себе его поцелуи и, содрогаясь, двинула плечами.

“Why, it’s I!” she suddenly understood, and looking round, she seemed all at once to feel his kisses on her, and twitched her shoulders, shuddering.

Потом подняла руку к губам и поцеловала её.

Then she lifted her hand to her lips and kissed it.

«Что это, я с ума схожу», – и она пошла в спальню, где Аннушка убирала комнату.

“What is it? Why, I’m going out of my mind!” and she went into her bedroom, where Annushka was tidying the room.

–Аннушка, – сказала она, останавливаясь пред ней и глядя на горничную, сама не зная, что скажет ей.

“Annushka,” she said, coming to a standstill before her, and she stared at the maid, not knowing what to say to her.

–К Дарье Александровне вы хотели ехать, – как бы понимая, сказала горничная.

“You meant to go and see Darya Alexandrovna,” said the girl, as though she understood.

–К Дарье Александровне?

“Darya Alexandrovna?

Да, я поеду.

Yes, I’ll go.”

«Пятнадцать минут туда, пятнадцать назад.

“Fifteen minutes there, fifteen minutes back.

Он едет уже, он приедет сейчас. –

He’s coming, he’ll be here soon.”

Она вынула часы и посмотрела на них. –

She took out her watch and looked at it.

Но как он мог уехать, оставив меня в таком положении?

“But how could he go away, leaving me in such a state?

Как он может жить, не примирившись со мною?»

How can he live, without making it up with me?”

Она подошла к окну и стала смотреть на улицу.

She went to the window and began looking into the street.

По времени он уже мог вернуться.

Judging by the time, he might be back now.

Но расчёт мог быть неверен, и она вновь стала вспоминать, когда он уехал, и считать минуты.

But her calculations might be wrong, and she began once more to recall when he had started and to count the minutes.

В то время как она отходила к большим часам, чтобы проверить свои, кто-то подъехал.

At the moment when she had moved away to the big clock to compare it with her watch, someone drove up.

Взглянув из окна, она увидала его коляску.

Glancing out of the window, she saw his carriage.

Но никто не шёл на лестницу, и внизу слышны были голоса.

But no one came upstairs, and voices could be heard below.

Это был посланный, вернувшийся в коляске.

It was the messenger who had come back in the carriage.

Она сошла к нему.

She went down to him.

–Графа не застали.

“We didn’t catch the count.

Они уехали на Нижегородскую дорогу.

The count had driven off on the lower city road.”

–Что тебе?

“What do you say?

Что?.. –

What!...”

обратилась она к румяному, весёлому Михайле, подававшему ей назад её записку.

she said to the rosy, good-humored Mihail, as he handed her back her note.

«Да ведь он не получил её», – вспомнила она.

“Why, then, he has never received it!” she thought.

–Поезжай с этой же запиской в деревню к графине Вронской, знаешь?

“Go with this note to Countess Vronskaya’s place, you know?

И тотчас же привези ответ, – сказала она посланному.

and bring an answer back immediately,” she said to the messenger.

«А я сама, что же я буду делать? –

“And I, what am I going to do?”

подумала она. –

she thought.

Да, я поеду к Долли, это правда, а то я с ума сойду.

“Yes, I’m going to Dolly’s, that’s true or else I shall go out of my mind.

Да, я могу ещё телеграфировать».

Yes, and I can telegraph, too.”

И она написала депешу:

And she wrote a telegram.

«Мне необходимо переговорить, сейчас приезжайте».

“I absolutely must talk to you; come at once.”

Отослав телеграмму, она пошла одеваться.

After sending off the telegram, she went to dress.

Уже одетая и в шляпе, она опять взглянула в глаза потолстевшей, спокойной Аннушки.

When she was dressed and in her hat, she glanced again into the eyes of the plump, comfortable-looking Annushka.

Явное сострадание было видно в этих маленьких добрых серых глазах.

There was unmistakable sympathy in those good-natured little gray eyes.

–Аннушка, милая, что мне делать? –

“Annushka, dear, what am I to do?”

рыдая, проговорила Анна, беспомощно опускаясь на кресло.

said Anna, sobbing and sinking helplessly into a chair.

–Что же так беспокоиться, Анна Аркадьевна!

“Why fret yourself so, Anna Arkadyevna?

Ведь это бывает.

Why, there’s nothing out of the way.

Вы поезжайте, рассеетесь, – сказала горничная.

You drive out a little, and it’ll cheer you up,” said the maid.

–Да, я поеду, – опоминаясь и вставая, сказала Анна. –

“Yes, I’m going,” said Anna, rousing herself and getting up.

А если без меня будет телеграмма, прислать к Дарье Александровне…

“And if there’s a telegram while I’m away, send it on to Darya Alexandrovna’s ...

Нет, я сама вернусь.

but no, I shall be back myself.”

«Да, не надо думать, надо делать что-нибудь, ехать, главное уехать из этого дома», – сказала она, с ужасом прислушиваясь к страшному клокотанью, происходившему в её сердце, и поспешно вышла и села в коляску.

“Yes, I mustn’t think, I must do something, drive somewhere, and most of all, get out of this house,” she said, feeling with terror the strange turmoil going on in her own heart, and she made haste to go out and get into the carriage.

–Куда прикажете? –

“Where to?”

спросил Петр, пред тем как садиться на козлы.

asked Pyotr before getting onto the box.

–На Знаменку, к Облонским.

“To Znamenka, the Oblonskys’.”

– Да отчего же?

“Oh, why so?

Я, напротив, надеюсь, – сказала Долли, с любопытством глядя на Анну.

On the contrary, I have hopes,” said Dolly, looking inquisitively at Anna.

Она никогда не видала её в таком странном раздражённом состоянии. –

She had never seen her in such a strangely irritable condition.

Ты когда едешь? –

“When are you going away?”

спросила она.

she asked.

Анна, сощурившись, смотрела пред собой и не отвечала ей.

Anna, half-closing her eyes, looked straight before her and did not answer.

– Что ж Кити прячется от меня? –

“Why does Kitty shrink from me?”

сказала она, глядя на дверь и краснея.

she said, looking at the door and flushing red.

– Ах, какие пустяки!

“Oh, what nonsense!

Она кормит, и у неё не ладится дело, я ей советовала…

She’s nursing, and things aren’t going right with her, and I’ve been advising her....

Она очень рада.

She’s delighted.

Она сейчас придёт, – неловко, не умея говорить неправду, говорила Долли. –

She’ll be here in a minute,” said Dolly awkwardly, not clever at lying.

Да вот и она.

“Yes, here she is.”

Узнав, что приехала Анна, Кити хотела не выходить; но Долли уговорила её.

Hearing that Anna had called, Kitty had wanted not to appear, but Dolly persuaded her.

Собравшись с силами, Кити вышла и, краснея, подошла к ней и подала руку.

Rallying her forces, Kitty went in, walked up to her, blushing, and shook hands.

– Я очень рада, – сказала она дрожащим голосом.

“I am so glad to see you,” she said with a trembling voice.

Кити была смущена тою борьбой, которая происходила в ней, между враждебностью к этой дурной женщине и желанием быть снисходительною к ней; но как только она увидала красивое, симпатичное лицо Анны, вся враждебность тотчас же исчезла.

Kitty had been thrown into confusion by the inward conflict between her antagonism to this bad woman and her desire to be nice to her. But as soon as she saw Anna’s lovely and attractive face, all feeling of antagonism disappeared.

– Я бы не удивилась, если бы вы и не хотели встретиться со мною.

“I should not have been surprised if you had not cared to meet me.

Я ко всему привыкла.

I’m used to everything.

Вы были больны?

You have been ill?

Да, вы переменились, – сказала Анна.

Yes, you are changed,” said Anna.

Кити чувствовала, что Анна враждебно смотрит на неё.

Kitty felt that Anna was looking at her with hostile eyes.

Она объясняла эту враждебность неловким положением, в котором теперь чувствовала себя пред ней прежде покровительствовавшая ей Анна, и ей стало жалко её.

She ascribed this hostility to the awkward position in which Anna, who had once patronized her, must feel with her now, and she felt sorry for her.
