Chapter 26

Never before had a day been passed in quarrel.

Нынче это было в первый раз.

Today was the first time.

И это была не ссора.

And this was not a quarrel.

Это было очевидное признание в совершенном охлаждении.

It was the open acknowledgment of complete coldness.

Разве можно было взглянуть на неё так, как он взглянул, когда входил в комнату за аттестатом?

Was it possible to glance at her as he had glanced when he came into the room for the guarantee?—

Посмотреть на неё, видеть, что сердце её разрывается от отчаяния, и пройти молча с этим равнодушно-спокойным лицом?

?—to look at her, see her heart was breaking with despair, and go out without a word with that face of callous composure?

Он не то что охладел к ней, но он ненавидел её, потому что любил другую женщину, – это было ясно.

He was not merely cold to her, he hated her because he loved another woman—that was clear.

И, вспоминая все те жестокие слова, которые он сказал, Анна придумывала ещё те слова, которые он, очевидно, желал и мог сказать ей, и все более и более раздражалась.

And remembering all the cruel words he had said, Anna supplied, too, the words that he had unmistakably wished to say and could have said to her, and she grew more and more exasperated.

«Я вас не держу, – мог сказать он. –

“I won’t prevent you,” he might say.

Вы можете идти куда хотите.

“You can go where you like.

Вы не хотели разводиться с вашим мужем, вероятно, чтобы вернуться к нему.

You were unwilling to be divorced from your husband, no doubt so that you might go back to him.

Вернитесь.

Go back to him.

If you want money, I’ll give it to you.

How many roubles do you want?”

Все самые жестокие слова, которые мог сказать грубый человек, он сказал ей в её воображении, и она не прощала их ему, как будто он действительно сказал их.

All the most cruel words that a brutal man could say, he said to her in her imagination, and she could not forgive him for them, as though he had actually said them.

«А разве не вчера только он клялся в любви, он, правдивый и честный человек?

“But didn’t he only yesterday swear he loved me, he, a truthful and sincere man?

Разве я не отчаивалась напрасно уж много раз?» –

Haven’t I despaired for nothing many times already?”

вслед за тем говорила она себе.

she said to herself afterwards.

Весь этот день, за исключением поездки к Вильсон, которая заняла у неё два часа, Анна провела в сомнениях о том, все ли кончено, или есть надежда примирения, и надо ли ей сейчас уехать, или ещё раз увидать его.

All that day, except for the visit to Wilson’s, which occupied two hours, Anna spent in doubts whether everything were over or whether there were still hope of reconciliation, whether she should go away at once or see him once more.

Она ждала его целый день и вечером, уходя в свою комнату, приказав передать ему, что у неё голова болит, загадала себе: «Если он придёт, несмотря на слова горничной, то, значит, он ещё любит.

She was expecting him the whole day, and in the evening, as she went to her own room, leaving a message for him that her head ached, she said to herself, “If he comes in spite of what the maid says, it means that he loves me still.

Если же нет, то, значит, все кончено, и тогда я решу, что мне делать!..»

If not, it means that all is over, and then I will decide what I’m to do!...”

Она вечером слышала остановившийся стук его коляски, его звонок, его шаги и разговор с девушкой: он поверил тому, что ему сказали, не хотел больше ничего узнавать и пошёл к себе.

In the evening she heard the rumbling of his carriage stop at the entrance, his ring, his steps and his conversation with the servant; he believed what was told him, did not care to find out more, and went to his own room.

Стало быть, все было кончено.

So then everything was over.

И смерть, как единственное средство восстановить в его сердце любовь к ней, наказать его и одержать победу в той борьбе, которую поселившийся в её сердце злой дух вёл с ним, ясно и живо представилась ей.

And death rose clearly and vividly before her mind as the sole means of bringing back love for her in his heart, of punishing him and of gaining the victory in that strife which the evil spirit in possession of her heart was waging with him.

Теперь было все равно: ехать или не ехать в Воздвиженское, получить или не получить от мужа развод – все было ненужно.

Now nothing mattered: going or not going to Vozdvizhenskoe, getting or not getting a divorce from her husband—all that did not matter.

Нужно было одно – наказать его.

The one thing that mattered was punishing him.

Когда она налила себе обычный прием опиума и подумала о том, что стоило только выпить всю склянку, чтобы умереть, ей показалось это так легко и просто, что она опять с наслаждением стала думать о том, как он будет мучаться, раскаиваться и любить её память, когда уже будет поздно.

When she poured herself out her usual dose of opium, and thought that she had only to drink off the whole bottle to die, it seemed to her so simple and easy, that she began musing with enjoyment on how he would suffer, and repent and love her memory when it would be too late.

Она лежала в постели с открытыми глазами, глядя при свете одной догоравшей свечи на лепной карниз потолка и на захватывающую часть его тень от ширмы, и живо представляла себе, что он будет чувствовать, когда её уже не будет и она будет для него только одно воспоминание.

She lay in bed with open eyes, by the light of a single burned-down candle, gazing at the carved cornice of the ceiling and at the shadow of the screen that covered part of it, while she vividly pictured to herself how he would feel when she would be no more, when she would be only a memory to him.

«Как мог я сказать ей эти жестокие слова? –

“How could I say such cruel things to her?”

будет говорить он. –

he would say.

Как мог я выйти из комнаты, не сказав ей ничего?

“How could I go out of the room without saying anything to her?

Но теперь её уж нет.

But now she is no more.

Она навсегда ушла от нас.

She has gone away from us forever.

Она там…»

She is....” Suddenly the shadow of the screen wavered, pounced on the whole cornice, the whole ceiling;

Вдруг тень ширмы заколебалась, захватила весь карниз, весь потолок, другие тени с другой стороны рванулись ей навстречу; на мгновение тени сбежали, но потом с новой быстротой надвинулись, поколебались, слились, и все стало темно.

other shadows from the other side swooped to meet it, for an instant the shadows flitted back, but then with fresh swiftness they darted forward, wavered, commingled, and all was darkness.

«Смерть!» –

“Death!”

подумала она.

she thought.

И такой ужас нашёл на неё, что она долго не могла понять, где она, и долго не могла дрожащими руками найти спички и зажечь другую свечу вместо той, которая догорела и потухла.

And such horror came upon her that for a long while she could not realize where she was, and for a long while her trembling hands could not find the matches and light another candle, instead of the one that had burned down and gone out.

«Нет, все – только жить!

“No, anything—only to live!

Ведь я люблю его.

Why, I love him!

Ведь он любит меня!

Why, he loves me!

Это было и пройдёт», – говорила она, чувствуя, что слезы радости возвращения к жизни текли по её щекам.

This has been before and will pass,” she said, feeling that tears of joy at the return to life were trickling down her cheeks.

И, чтобы спастись от своего страха, она поспешно пошла в кабинет к нему.

And to escape from her panic she went hurriedly to his room.

Он спал в кабинете крепким сном.

He was asleep there, and sleeping soundly.

Она подошла к нему и, сверху освещая его лицо, долго смотрела на него.

She went up to him, and holding the light above his face, she gazed a long while at him.

Теперь, когда он спал, она любила его так, что при виде его не могла удержать слез нежности;

Now when he was asleep, she loved him so that at the sight of him she could not keep back tears of tenderness.

но она знала, что если б он проснулся, то он посмотрел бы на неё холодным, сознающим свою правоту взглядом, и что, прежде чем говорить ему о своей любви, она должна бы была доказать ему, как он был виноват пред нею.

But she knew that if he waked up he would look at her with cold eyes, convinced that he was right, and that before telling him of her love, she would have to prove to him that he had been wrong in his treatment of her.

Она, не разбудив его, вернулась к себе и после второго приема опиума к утру заснула тяжёлым, неполным сном, во все время которого она не переставала чувствовать себя.

Without waking him, she went back, and after a second dose of opium she fell towards morning into a heavy, incomplete sleep, during which she never quite lost consciousness.

Утром страшный кошмар, несколько раз повторявшийся ей в сновидениях ещё до связи с Вронским, представился ей опять и разбудил её.

In the morning she was waked by a horrible nightmare, which had recurred several times in her dreams, even before her connection with Vronsky.

Старичок-мужичок с взлохмаченною бородой что-то делал, нагнувшись над железом, приговаривая бессмысленные французские слова, и она, как и всегда при этом кошмаре (что и составляло его ужас) чувствовала, что мужичок этот не обращает на неё внимания, но делает это какое-то страшное дело в железе над нею, что-то странное делает над ней.

A little old man with unkempt beard was doing something bent down over some iron, muttering meaningless French words, and she, as she always did in this nightmare (it was what made the horror of it), felt that this peasant was taking no notice of her, but was doing something horrible with the iron—over her.

И она проснулась в холодном поту.

And she waked up in a cold sweat.

Когда она встала, ей, как в тумане, вспомнился вчерашний день.

When she got up, the previous day came back to her as though veiled in mist.

«Была ссора.

“There was a quarrel.

Было то, что бывало уже несколько раз.

Just what has happened several times.

Я сказала, что у меня голова болит, и он не входил.

I said I had a headache, and he did not come in to see me.

Завтра мы едем, надо видеть его и готовиться к отъезду», – сказала она себе.

Tomorrow we’re going away; I must see him and get ready for the journey,” she said to herself.

И, узнав, что он в кабинете, она пошла к нему.

And learning that he was in his study, she went down to him.

Проходя по гостиной, она услыхала, что у подъезда остановился экипаж, и, выглянув в окно, увидала карету, из которой высовывалась молодая девушка в лиловой шляпке, что-то приказывая звонившему лакею.

As she passed through the drawing-room she heard a carriage stop at the entrance, and looking out of the window she saw the carriage, from which a young girl in a lilac hat was leaning out giving some direction to the footman ringing the bell.

После переговоров в передней кто-то вошёл наверх, и рядом с гостиной послышались шаги Вронского.

After a parley in the hall, someone came upstairs, and Vronsky’s steps could be heard passing the drawing-room.

Он быстрыми шагами сходил по лестнице.

He went rapidly downstairs.

Анна опять подошла к окну.

Anna went again to the window.

Вот он вышел без шляпы на крыльцо и подошёл к карете.

She saw him come out onto the steps without his hat and go up to the carriage.

Молодая девушка в лиловой шляпке передала ему пакет.

The young girl in the lilac hat handed him a parcel.

Вронский, улыбаясь, сказал ей что-то.

Vronsky, smiling, said something to her.

Карета отъехала; он быстро взбежал назад по лестнице.

The carriage drove away, he ran rapidly upstairs again.

Туман, застилавший все в её душе, вдруг рассеялся.

The mists that had shrouded everything in her soul parted suddenly.

Вчерашние чувства с новой болью защемили больное сердце.

The feelings of yesterday pierced the sick heart with a fresh pang.

Она не могла понять теперь, как она могла унизиться до того, чтобы пробыть целый день с ним в его доме.

She could not understand now how she could have lowered herself by spending a whole day with him in his house.

Она вошла к нему в кабинет, чтоб объявить ему своё решение.

She went into his room to announce her determination.

–Это Сорокина с дочерью заезжала и привезла мне деньги и бумаги от maman.

“That was Madame Sorokina and her daughter. They came and brought me the money and the deeds from maman.

Я вчера не мог получить.

I couldn’t get them yesterday.

Как твоя голова, лучше? –

How is your head, better?”

сказал он спокойно, не желая видеть и понимать мрачного и торжественного выражения её лица.

he said quietly, not wishing to see and to understand the gloomy and solemn expression of her face.

Она молча пристально смотрела на него, стоя посреди комнаты.

She looked silently, intently at him, standing in the middle of the room.

Он взглянул на неё, на мгновенье нахмурился и продолжал читать письмо. Она повернулась и медленно пошла из комнаты.

He glanced at her, frowned for a moment, and went on reading a letter. She turned, and went deliberately out of the room.

Он ещё мог вернуть её, но она дошла до двери, он все молчал, и слышен был только звук шуршания перевёртываемого листа бумаги.

He still might have turned her back, but she had reached the door, he was still silent, and the only sound audible was the rustling of the note paper as he turned it.

–Да, кстати, – сказал он в то время, как она была уже в дверях, – завтра мы едем решительно?

“Oh, by the way,” he said at the very moment she was in the doorway, “we’re going tomorrow for certain, aren’t we?”

Не правда ли? – Вы, но не я, – сказала она, оборачиваясь к нему.

“You, but not I,” she said, turning round to him.

–Анна, эдак невозможно жить…

“Anna, we can’t go on like this....”

–Вы, но не я, – повторила она.

“You, but not I,” she repeated.

–Это становится невыносимо!

“This is getting unbearable!”

–Вы…

“You ...

вы раскаетесь в этом, – сказала она и вышла.

you will be sorry for this,” she said, and went out.

Испуганный тем отчаянным выражением, с которым были сказаны эти слова, он вскочил и хотел бежать за нею, но, опомнившись, опять сел и, крепко сжав зубы, нахмурился.

Frightened by the desperate expression with which these words were uttered, he jumped up and would have run after her, but on second thoughts he sat down and scowled, setting his teeth.

Эта неприличная, как он находил, угроза чего-то раздражила его.

This vulgar—as he thought it—threat of something vague exasperated him.

«Я пробовал все, – подумал он, – остаётся одно – не обращать внимания», и он стал собираться ехать в город и опять к матери, от которой надо было получить подпись на доверенности.

“I’ve tried everything,” he thought; “the only thing left is not to pay attention,” and he began to get ready to drive into town, and again to his mother’s to get her signature to the deeds.

Она слышала звуки его шагов по кабинету и столовой.

She heard the sound of his steps about the study and the dining-room.

У гостиной он остановился.

At the drawing-room he stood still.

Но он не повернул к ней, он только отдал приказание о том, чтоб отпустили без него Войтову жеребца.

But he did not turn in to see her, he merely gave an order that the horse should be given to Voytov if he came while he was away.

Потом она слышала, как подали коляску, как отворилась дверь, и он вышел опять.

Then she heard the carriage brought round, the door opened, and he came out again.

Но вот он опять вошёл в сени, и кто-то взбежал наверх.

But he went back into the porch again, and someone was running upstairs.

Это камердинер вбегал за забытыми перчатками.

It was the valet running up for his gloves that had been forgotten.

Она подошла к окну и видела, как он не глядя взял перчатки и, тронув рукой спину кучера, что-то сказал ему.

She went to the window and saw him take the gloves without looking, and touching the coachman on the back he said something to him.

Потом, не глядя в окна, он сел в свою обычную позу в коляске, заложив ногу на ногу, и, надевая перчатку, скрылся за углом.

Then without looking up at the window he settled himself in his usual attitude in the carriage, with his legs crossed, and drawing on his gloves he vanished round the corner.

– Куда прикажете? –

“Where to?”

спросил Петр, пред тем как садиться на козлы.

asked Pyotr before getting onto the box.

– На Знаменку, к Облонским.

“To Znamenka, the Oblonskys’.”
