| Chapter 31 |
Вновь избранный губернский предводитель и многие из торжествующей партии новых обедали в этот день у Вронского.
| The newly elected marshal and many of the successful party dined that day with Vronsky. |
Вронский приехал на выборы и потому, что ему было скучно в деревне и нужно было заявить свои права на свободу пред Анной, и для того, чтоб отплатить Свияжскому поддержкой на выборах за все его хлопоты для Вронского на земских выборах, и более всего для того, чтобы строго исполнить все обязанности того положения дворянина и землевладельца, которые он себе избрал.
| Vronsky had come to the elections partly because he was bored in the country and wanted to show Anna his right to independence, and also to repay Sviazhsky by his support at the election for all the trouble he had taken for Vronsky at the district council election, but chiefly in order strictly to perform all those duties of a nobleman and landowner which he had taken upon himself. |
Но он никак не ожидал, чтоб это дело выборов так заняло его, так забрало за живое и чтоб он мог так хорошо делать это дело.
| But he had not in the least expected that the election would so interest him, so keenly excite him, and that he would be so good at this kind of thing. |
Он был совершенно новый человек в кругу дворян, но, очевидно, имел успех и не ошибался, думая, что приобрёл уже влияние между дворянами.

| But what contributed more than all to his success was his direct, equable manner with everyone, which very quickly made the majority of the noblemen reverse the current opinion of his supposed haughtiness. |

| He saw clearly, and other people recognized it, too, that he had done a great deal to secure the success of Nevyedovsky. |
И теперь у себя за столом, празднуя выбор Неведовского, он испытывал приятное чувство торжества за своего избранника.
| And now at his own table, celebrating Nevyedovsky’s election, he was experiencing an agreeable sense of triumph over the success of his candidate. |
Самые выборы так заманили его, что, если он будет женат к будущему трёхлетию, он и сам подумывал баллотироваться, – вроде того, как после выигрыша приза чрез жокея ему захотелось скакать самому.
| The election itself had so fascinated him that, if he could succeed in getting married during the next three years, he began to think of standing himself—much as after winning a race ridden by a jockey, he had longed to ride a race himself. |
Теперь же праздновался выигрыш жокея.
| Today he was celebrating the success of his jockey. |
Вронский сидел в голове стола, по правую руку его сидел молодой губернатор, свитский генерал.
| Vronsky sat at the head of the table, on his right hand sat the young governor, a general of high rank. |
Для всех это был хозяин губернии, торжественно открывавший выборы, говоривший речь и возбуждавший и уважение и раболепность во многих, как видел Вронский;
| To all the rest he was the chief man in the province, who had solemnly opened the elections with his speech, and aroused a feeling of respect and even of awe in many people, as Vronsky saw; |
для Вронского же это был Маслов Катька, – такое было у него прозвище в Пажеском корпусе, – конфузившийся пред ним, и которого Вронский старался mettre а son aise.💬

По левую руку сидел Неведовский со своим юным, непоколебимым и ядовитым лицом.
| On the left hand sat Nevyedovsky with his youthful, stubborn, and malignant face. |
С ним Вронский был прост и уважителен.
| With him Vronsky was simple and deferential. |
Свияжский переносил свою неудачу весело.
| Sviazhsky took his failure very light-heartedly. |
Это даже не была неудача для него, как он сам сказал, с бокалом обращаясь к Неведовскому: лучше нельзя было найти представителя того нового направления, которому должно последовать дворянство.
| It was indeed no failure in his eyes, as he said himself, turning, glass in hand, to Nevyedovsky; they could not have found a better representative of the new movement, which the nobility ought to follow. |
И потому все честное, как он сказал, стояло на стороне нынешнего успеха и торжествовало его.
| And so every honest person, as he said, was on the side of today’s success and was rejoicing over it. |
Степан Аркадьич был также рад, что весело провёл время и что все довольны.
| Stepan Arkadyevitch was glad, too, that he was having a good time, and that everyone was pleased. |
За прекрасным обедом перебирались эпизоды выборов.
| The episode of the elections served as a good occasion for a capital dinner. |
Свияжский комически передал слезливую речь предводителя и заметил, обращаясь к Неведовскому, что его превосходительству придётся избрать другую, более сложную, чем слезы, поверку сумм.
| Sviazhsky comically imitated the tearful discourse of the marshal, and observed, addressing Nevyedovsky, that his excellency would have to select another more complicated method of auditing the accounts than tears. |
Другой шутливый дворянин рассказал, как выписаны были лакеи в чулках для бала губернского предводителя и как теперь их придётся отослать назад, если новый губернский предводитель не даст бала с лакеями в чулках.
| Another nobleman jocosely described how footmen in stockings had been ordered for the marshal’s ball, and how now they would have to be sent back unless the new marshal would give a ball with footmen in stockings. |
Беспрестанно во время обеда, обращаясь к Неведовскому, говорили: «наш губернский предводитель» и «ваше превосходительство».
| Continually during dinner they said of Nevyedovsky: “our marshal,” and “your excellency.” |
Это говорилось с тем же удовольствием, с каким молодую женщину называют «madame» и по имени мужа.
| This was said with the same pleasure with which a bride is called “Madame” and her husband’s name. |
Неведовский делал вид, что он не только равнодушен, но и презирает это звание, но очевидно было, что он счастлив и держит себя под уздцы, чтобы не выразить восторга, не подобающего той новой, либеральной среде, в которой все находились.
| Nevyedovsky affected to be not merely indifferent but scornful of this appellation, but it was obvious that he was highly delighted, and had to keep a curb on himself not to betray the triumph which was unsuitable to their new liberal tone. |
За обедом было послано несколько телеграмм людям, интересовавшимся ходом выборов.
| After dinner several telegrams were sent to people interested in the result of the election. |
И Степан Аркадьич, которому было очень весело, послал Дарье Александровне телеграмму такого содержания: «Неведовский выбран двенадцатью шарами.
| And Stepan Arkadyevitch, who was in high good humor, sent Darya Alexandrovna a telegram: “Nevyedovsky elected by twenty votes. |
Поздравляю.
| Congratulations. |
Передай».
| Tell people.” |
Он продиктовал её вслух, заметив: «Надо их порадовать».
| He dictated it aloud, saying: “We must let them share our rejoicing.” |
Дарья же Александровна, получив депешу, только вздохнула о рубле за телеграмму и поняла, что дело было в конце обеда.
| Darya Alexandrovna, getting the message, simply sighed over the rouble wasted on it, and understood that it was an after-dinner affair. |
Она знала, что Стива имеет слабость в конце хороших обедов
| She knew Stiva had a weakness after dining for faire jouer le télégraphe. |
Все было, вместе с отличным обедом и винами не от русских виноторговцев, а прямо заграничной разливки, очень благородно, просто и весело.
| Everything, together with the excellent dinner and the wine, not from Russian merchants, but imported direct from abroad, was extremely dignified, simple, and enjoyable. |
Кружок людей в двадцать человек был подобран Свияжским из единомышленных, либеральных, новых деятелей и вместе остроумных и порядочных.
| The party—some twenty—had been selected by Sviazhsky from among the more active new liberals, all of the same way of thinking, who were at the same time clever and well bred. |
Пили тосты, тоже полушутливые, и за нового губернского предводителя, и за губернатора, и за директора банка, и за «любезного нашего хозяина».
| They drank, also half in jest, to the health of the new marshal of the province, of the governor, of the bank director, and of “our amiable host.” |
Вронский был доволен.
| Vronsky was satisfied. |
Он никак не ожидал такого милого тона в провинции.
| He had never expected to find so pleasant a tone in the provinces. |
В конце обеда стало ещё веселее.
| Towards the end of dinner it was still more lively. |
Губернатор просил Вронского ехать в концерт в пользу братии, который устраивала его жена, желающая с ним познакомиться.
| The governor asked Vronsky to come to a concert for the benefit of the Servians which his wife, who was anxious to make his acquaintance, had been getting up. |
–Там будет бал, и ты увидишь нашу красавицу.
| “There’ll be a ball, and you’ll see the belle of the province. |
В самом деле замечательно.
| Worth seeing, really.” |
– Not in my line,💬 –отвечал Вронский, любивший это выражение, но улыбнулся и обещал приехать.
| “Not in my line,” Vronsky answered. He liked that English phrase. But he smiled, and promised to come. |
Уже пред выходом из-за стола, когда все закурили, камердинер Вронского подошёл к нему с письмом на подносе.
| Before they rose from the table, when all of them were smoking, Vronsky’s valet went up to him with a letter on a tray. |
–Из Воздвиженского с нарочным, – сказал он с значительным выражением.
| “From Vozdvizhenskoe by special messenger,” he said with a significant expression. |
–Удивительно, как он похож на товарища прокурора Свентицкого, – сказал один из гостей по-французски про камердинера, в то время как Вронский, хмурясь, читал письмо.
| “Astonishing! how like he is to the deputy prosecutor Sventitsky,” said one of the guests in French of the valet, while Vronsky, frowning, read the letter. |
Письмо было от Анны.
| The letter was from Anna. |
Ещё прежде чем он прочёл письмо, он уже знал его содержание.
| Before he read the letter, he knew its contents. |
Предполагая, что выборы кончатся в пять дней, он обещал вернуться в пятницу.
| Expecting the elections to be over in five days, he had promised to be back on Friday. |
Нынче была суббота, и он знал, что содержанием письма были упрёки в том, что он не вернулся вовремя.
| Today was Saturday, and he knew that the letter contained reproaches for not being back at the time fixed. |
Письмо, которое он послал вчера вечером, вероятно, не дошло ещё.
| The letter he had sent the previous evening had probably not reached her yet. |
Содержание было то самое, как он ожидал, но форма была неожиданная и особенно неприятная ему.
| The letter was what he had expected, but the form of it was unexpected, and particularly disagreeable to him. |

Княжна Варвара не помощница, а помеха.
| Princess Varvara is no help, but a hindrance. |
Я ждала тебя третьего дня, вчера и теперь посылаю узнать, где ты и что ты?
| I expected you the day before yesterday, and yesterday, and now I am sending to find out where you are and what you are doing. |
Я сама хотела ехать, но раздумала, зная, что это будет тебе неприятно.
| I wanted to come myself, but thought better of it, knowing you would dislike it. |
Дай ответ какой-нибудь, чтоб я знала, что делать».
| Send some answer, that I may know what to do.” |
Ребёнок болен, а она сама хотела ехать.
| The child ill, yet she had thought of coming herself. |
Дочь больна, и этот враждебный тон.
| Their daughter ill, and this hostile tone. |
Это невинное веселье выборов и та мрачная, тяжёлая любовь, к которой он должен был вернуться, поразили Вронского своею противоположностью.
| The innocent festivities over the election, and this gloomy, burdensome love to which he had to return struck Vronsky by their contrast. |
Но надо было ехать, и он по первому поезду, в ночь, уехал к себе.
| But he had to go, and by the first train that night he set off home. |
– Это все было правда.
| “It was all the truth.” |
– Да я и не сомневаюсь.
| “Oh, I don’t doubt it.” |
– Нет, ты сомневаешься.
| “Yes, you do doubt it. |
Ты недоволен, я вижу.
| You are vexed, I see.” |
– Ни одной минуты.
| “Not for one moment. |
Я только недоволен, это правда, тем, что ты как будто не хочешь допустить, что есть обязанности…
| I’m only vexed, that’s true, that you seem somehow unwilling to admit that there are duties....” |
– Обязанности ехать в концерт…
| “The duty of going to a concert....” |
– Но не будем говорить, – сказал он.
| “But we won’t talk about it,” he said. |
– Почему же не говорить? –
| “Why not talk about it?” |
сказала она.

– Я только хочу сказать, что могут встретиться дела, необходимость.
| “I only meant to say that matters of real importance may turn up. |
Вот теперь мне надо будет ехать в Москву, по делу дома…
| Now, for instance, I shall have to go to Moscow to arrange about the house.... |
Ах, Анна, почему ты так раздражаешься?
| Oh, Anna, why are you so irritable? |
Разве ты не знаешь, что я не могу без тебя жить?
| Don’t you know that I can’t live without you?” |
– А если так, – сказала Анна вдруг изменившимся голосом, – то ты тяготишься этою жизнью…
| “If so,” said Anna, her voice suddenly changing, “it means that you are sick of this life.... |
Да, ты приедешь на день и уедешь, как поступают…
| Yes, you will come for a day and go away, as men do....” |
– Анна, это жестоко.
| “Anna, that’s cruel. |
Я всю жизнь готов отдать…
| I am ready to give up my whole life.” |
Но она не слушала его.
| But she did not hear him. |
– Если ты поедешь в Москву, то и я поеду.
| “If you go to Moscow, I will go too. |
Я не останусь здесь.
| I will not stay here. |
Или мы должны разойтись, или жить вместе.
| Either we must separate or else live together.” |
– Ведь ты знаешь, что это одно моё желанье.
| “Why, you know, that’s my one desire. |
Но для этого…
| But for that....” |
– Надо развод?
| “We must get a divorce. |
Я напишу ему.
| I will write to him. |
Я вижу, что я не могу так жить…
| I see I cannot go on like this.... |
Но я поеду с тобой в Москву.
| But I will come with you to Moscow.” |
– Точно ты угрожаешь мне.
| “You talk as if you were threatening me. |
Да я ничего так не желаю, как не разлучаться с тобою, – улыбаясь, сказал Вронский.
| But I desire nothing so much as never to be parted from you,” said Vronsky, smiling. |
Но не только холодный, злой взгляд человека преследуемого и ожесточённого блеснул в его глазах, когда он говорил эти нежные слова.
| But as he said these words there gleamed in his eyes not merely a cold look, but the vindictive look of a man persecuted and made cruel. |
Она видела этот взгляд и верно угадала его значение.
| She saw the look and correctly divined its meaning. |
«Если так, то это несчастие!» –
| “If so, it’s a calamity!” |
говорил этот его взгляд.
| that glance told her. |
Это было минутное впечатление, но она никогда уже не забыла его.
| It was a moment’s impression, but she never forgot it. |
Анна написала письмо мужу, прося его о разводе, и в конце ноября, расставшись с княжной Варварой, которой надо было ехать в Петербург, вместе с Вронским переехала в Москву.
| Anna wrote to her husband asking him about a divorce, and towards the end of November, taking leave of Princess Varvara, who wanted to go to Petersburg, she went with Vronsky to Moscow. |
Ожидая каждый день ответа Алексея Александровича и вслед за тем развода, они поселились теперь супружески вместе.
| Expecting every day an answer from Alexey Alexandrovitch, and after that the divorce, they now established themselves together like married people. |
