But Levin, as he talked to his brother, was continually looking round at Vronsky, trying to think of something to say to him to gloss over his rudeness.

“What are we waiting for now?”

спросил Левин, оглядываясь на Свияжского и Вронского.

asked Levin, looking at Sviazhsky and Vronsky.

–За Снетковым.

“For Snetkov.

Надо, чтоб он отказался или согласился, – отвечал Свияжский.

He has to refuse or to consent to stand,” answered Sviazhsky.

–Да что же он, согласился или нет?

“Well, and what has he done, consented or not?”

–В том-то и дело, что ни то ни се, – сказал Вронский.

“That’s the point, that he’s done neither,” said Vronsky.

–А если откажется, кто же будет баллотироваться? –

“And if he refuses, who will stand then?”

спросил Левин, поглядывая на Вронского.

asked Levin, looking at Vronsky.

–Кто хочет, – сказал Свияжский.

“Whoever chooses to,” said Sviazhsky.

–Вы будете? –

“Shall you?”

спросил Левин.

asked Levin.

–Только не я, – смутившись и бросив испуганный взгляд на стоявшего подле с Сергеем Ивановичем ядовитого господина, сказал Свияжский.

“Certainly not I,” said Sviazhsky, looking confused, and turning an alarmed glance at the malignant gentleman, who was standing beside Sergey Ivanovitch.

–Так кто же?

“Who then?

Неведовский? –

Nevyedovsky?”

сказал Левин, чувствуя, что он запутался.

said Levin, feeling he was putting his foot into it.

Но это было ещё хуже.

But this was worse still.

Неведовский и Свияжский были два кандидата.

Nevyedovsky and Sviazhsky were the two candidates.

–Уж я-то ни в каком случае, – ответил ядовитый господин.

“I certainly shall not, under any circumstances,” answered the malignant gentleman.

Это был сам Неведовский.

This was Nevyedovsky himself.

Свияжский познакомил с ним Левина.

Sviazhsky introduced him to Levin.

–Что, и тебя забрало за живое? –

“Well, you find it exciting too?”

сказал Степан Аркадьич, подмигивая Вронскому. –

said Stepan Arkadyevitch, winking at Vronsky.

Это вроде скачек.

“It’s something like a race.

Пари можно.

One might bet on it.”

–Да, это забирает за живое, – сказал Вронский. –

“Yes, it is keenly exciting,” said Vronsky.

И, раз взявшись за дело, хочется его сделать.

“And once taking the thing up, one’s eager to see it through.

Борьба! –

It’s a fight!”

сказал он, нахмурившись и сжав свои сильные скулы.

he said, scowling and setting his powerful jaws.

–Что за делец Свияжский!

“What a capable fellow Sviazhsky is!

Так ясно у него все.

Sees it all so clearly.”

–О да, – рассеянно сказал Вронский.

“Oh, yes!” Vronsky assented indifferently.

Наступило молчание, во время которого Вронский, – так как надо же смотреть на что-нибудь, – посмотрел на Левина, на его ноги, на его мундир, потом на его лицо и, заметив мрачные, направленные на себя глаза, чтобы сказать что-нибудь, сказал:

A silence followed, during which Vronsky—since he had to look at something—looked at Levin, at his feet, at his uniform, then at his face, and noticing his gloomy eyes fixed upon him, he said, in order to say something:

–А как это вы – постоянный деревенский житель, – не мировой судья?

“How is it that you, living constantly in the country, are not a justice of the peace?

Вы не в мундире мирового судьи.

You are not in the uniform of one.”

–Оттого, что я считаю, что мировой суд есть дурацкое учреждение, – отвечал мрачно Левин, все время ждавший случая разговориться с Вронским, чтобы загладить свою грубость при первой встрече.

“It’s because I consider that the justice of the peace is a silly institution,” Levin answered gloomily. He had been all the time looking for an opportunity to enter into conversation with Vronsky, so as to smooth over his rudeness at their first meeting.

–Я этого не полагаю, напротив, – со спокойным удивлением сказал Вронский.

“I don’t think so, quite the contrary,” Vronsky said, with quiet surprise.

–Это игрушка, – перебил его Левин. –

“It’s a plaything,” Levin cut him short.

Мировые судьи нам не нужны.

“We don’t want justices of the peace.

Я в восемь лет не имел ни одного дела.

I’ve never had a single thing to do with them during eight years.

А какое имел, то было решено навыворот.

And what I have had was decided wrongly by them.

Мировой судья от меня в сорока верстах.

The justice of the peace is over thirty miles from me.

Я должен о деле в два рубля посылать поверенного, который стоит пятнадцать.

For some matter of two roubles I should have to send a lawyer, who costs me fifteen.”

И он рассказал, как мужик украл у мельника муку, и когда мельник сказал ему это, то мужик подал иск судье в клевете.

And he related how a peasant had stolen some flour from the miller, and when the miller told him of it, had lodged a complaint for slander.

Все это было некстати и глупо, и Левин, в то время как говорил, сам чувствовал это.

All this was utterly uncalled for and stupid, and Levin felt it himself as he said it.

–О, это такой оригинал! –

“Oh, this is such an original fellow!”

сказал Степан Аркадьич со своею самою миндальною улыбкой. –

said Stepan Arkadyevitch with his most soothing, almond-oil smile.

“But come along;

И они разошлись.

And they separated.

–Я не понимаю, – сказал Сергей Иванович, заметивший неловкую выходку брата, – я не понимаю, как можно быть до такой степени лишенным всякого политического такта.

“I can’t understand,” said Sergey Ivanovitch, who had observed his brother’s clumsiness, “I can’t understand how anyone can be so absolutely devoid of political tact.

That’s where we Russians are so deficient.

Губернский предводитель – наш противник, ты с ним ami cochon 💬 и просишь его баллотироваться.

The marshal of the province is our opponent, and with him you’re ami cochon , and you beg him to stand.

I’m not making a friend of him;

он звал обедать, я не поеду к нему;

he’s asked me to dinner, and I’m not going;

но он наш, зачем же делать из него врага?

but he’s one of our side—why make an enemy of him?

Потом, ты спрашиваешь Неведовского, будет ли он баллотироваться.

Then you ask Nevyedovsky if he’s going to stand.

Это не делается.

That’s not a thing to do.”

–Ах, я ничего не понимаю!

“Oh, I don’t understand it at all!

И все это пустяки, – мрачно отвечал Левин.

And it’s all such nonsense,” Levin answered gloomily.

–Вот ты говоришь, что все это пустяки, а возьмёшься, так все путаешь.

“You say it’s all such nonsense, but as soon as you have anything to do with it, you make a muddle.”

Левин замолчал, и они вместе вошли в большую залу.

Levin did not answer, and they walked together into the big room.

Губернский предводитель, несмотря на то, что он чувствовал в воздухе приготовляемый ему подвох, и несмотря на то, что не все просили его, все-таки решился баллотироваться.

The marshal of the province, though he was vaguely conscious in the air of some trap being prepared for him, and though he had not been called upon by all to stand, had still made up his mind to stand.

Все в зале замолкло, секретарь громогласно объявил, что баллотируется в губернские предводители ротмистр гвардии Михаил Степанович Снетков.

All was silence in the room. The secretary announced in a loud voice that the captain of the guards, Mihail Stepanovitch Snetkov, would now be balloted for as marshal of the province.

Уездные предводители заходили с тарелочками, в которых были шары, от своих столов к губернскому, и начались выборы.

The district marshals walked carrying plates, on which were balls, from their tables to the high table, and the election began.

–Направо клади, – шепнул Степан Аркадьич Левину, когда он вместе с братом вслед за предводителем подошёл к столу.

“Put it in the right side,” whispered Stepan Arkadyevitch, as with his brother Levin followed the marshal of his district to the table.

Но Левин забыл теперь тот расчёт, который объясняли ему, и боялся, не ошибся ли Степан Аркадьич, сказав «направо».

But Levin had forgotten by now the calculations that had been explained to him, and was afraid Stepan Arkadyevitch might be mistaken in saying “the right side.”

Ведь Снетков был враг.

Surely Snetkov was the enemy.

Подойдя к ящику, он держал шар в правой, но, подумав, что ошибся, перед самым ящиком переложил шар в левую руку и, очевидно, потом положил налево.

As he went up, he held the ball in his right hand, but thinking he was wrong, just at the box he changed to the left hand, and undoubtedly put the ball to the left.

Знаток дела, стоявший у ящика, по одному движению локтя узнававший, кто куда положит, недовольно поморщился.

An adept in the business, standing at the box and seeing by the mere action of the elbow where each put his ball, scowled with annoyance.

Ему не на чем было упражнять свою проницательность.

It was no good for him to use his insight.

Все замолкло, и послышался счёт шаров.

Everything was still, and the counting of the balls was heard.

Потом одинокий голос провозгласил число избирательных и неизбирательных.

Then a single voice rose and proclaimed the numbers for and against.

Предводитель был выбран значительным большинством.

The marshal had been voted for by a considerable majority.

Все зашумело и стремительно бросилось к двери.

All was noise and eager movement towards the doors.

Снетков вошёл, и дворянство окружило его, поздравляя.

Snetkov came in, and the nobles thronged round him, congratulating him.

–Ну, теперь кончено? –

“Well, now is it over?”

спросил Левин у Сергея Ивановича.

Levin asked Sergey Ivanovitch.

–Только начинается, – улыбаясь, сказал за Сергея Ивановича Свияжский. –

“It’s only just beginning,” Sviazhsky said, replying for Sergey Ivanovitch with a smile.

Кандидат предводителя может получить больше шаров.

“Some other candidate may receive more votes than the marshal.”

Левин совсем опять забыл про это.

Levin had quite forgotten about that.

Он вспомнил только теперь, что тут была какая-то тонкость, но ему скучно было вспоминать, в чем она состояла.

Now he could only remember that there was some sort of trickery in it, but he was too bored to think what it was exactly.

На него нашло уныние, и захотелось выбраться из этой толпы.

He felt depressed, and longed to get out of the crowd.

Так как никто не обращал на него внимания и он, казалось, никому не был нужен, он потихоньку направился в маленькую залу, где закусывали, и почувствовал большое облегчение, опять увидав лакеев.

As no one was paying any attention to him, and no one apparently needed him, he quietly slipped away into the little room where the refreshments were, and again had a great sense of comfort when he saw the waiters.

Старичок лакей предложил ему покушать, и Левин согласился.

The little old waiter pressed him to have something, and Levin agreed.

Съев котлетку с фасолью и поговорив с лакеем о прежних господах, Левин, не желая входить в залу, где ему было так неприятно, пошёл пройтись на хоры.

After eating a cutlet with beans and talking to the waiters of their former masters, Levin, not wishing to go back to the hall, where it was all so distasteful to him, proceeded to walk through the galleries.

Хоры были полны нарядных дам, перегибавшихся через перила и старавшихся не проронить ни одного слова из того, что говорилось внизу.

The galleries were full of fashionably dressed ladies, leaning over the balustrade and trying not to lose a single word of what was being said below.

Около дам сидели и стояли элегантные адвокаты, учителя гимназии в очках и офицеры.

With the ladies were sitting and standing smart lawyers, high school teachers in spectacles, and officers.

Везде говорилось о выборах и о том, как измучался предводитель и как хороши были прения;

Everywhere they were talking of the election, and of how worried the marshal was, and how splendid the discussions had been.

в одной группе Левин слышал похвалу своему брату.

In one group Levin heard his brother’s praises.

Одна дама говорила адвокату:

One lady was telling a lawyer:

–Как я рада, что слышала Кознышева!

“How glad I am I heard Koznishev!

Это стоит, чтобы поголодать.

It’s worth losing one’s dinner.

Прелесть!

He’s exquisite!

Как ясно. И слышно все!

So clear and distinct all of it!

Вот у вас в суде никто так не говорит.

There’s not one of you in the law courts that speaks like that.

Только один Майдель, и то он далеко не так красноречив.

The only one is Meidel, and he’s not so eloquent by a long way.”

Найдя свободное место у перил, Левин перегнулся и стал смотреть и слушать.

Finding a free place, Levin leaned over the balustrade and began looking and listening.

Все дворяне сидели за перегородочками в своих уездах.

All the noblemen were sitting railed off behind barriers according to their districts.

Посередине залы стоял человек в мундире и тонким, громким голосом провозглашал:

In the middle of the room stood a man in a uniform, who shouted in a loud, high voice:

–Баллотируется в кандидаты губернского предводителя дворянства штаб-ротмистр Евгений Иванович Опухтин!

“As a candidate for the marshalship of the nobility of the province we call upon staff-captain Yevgeney Ivanovitch Apuhtin!”

Наступило мёртвое молчание, и послышался один слабый старческий голос: – Отказался!

A dead silence followed, and then a weak old voice was heard: “Declined!”

–Баллотируется надворный советник Петр Петрович Боль, – начинал опять голос.

“We call upon the privy councilor Pyotr Petrovitch Bol,” the voice began again.

–Отказался! –

“Declined!”

раздавался молодой визгливый голос.

a high boyish voice replied.

Опять начиналось то же, и опять «отказался».

Again it began, and again “Declined.”

Так продолжалось около часа.

And so it went on for about an hour.

Левин, облокотившись на перила, смотрел и слушал.

Levin, with his elbows on the balustrade, looked and listened.

Сначала он удивлялся и хотел понять, что это значило;

At first he wondered and wanted to know what it meant;

потом, убедившись, что понять этого он не может, ему стало скучно.

then feeling sure that he could not make it out he began to be bored.

Потом, вспомнив все то волнение и озлобление, которые он видел на всех лицах, ему стало грустно: он решился уехать и пошёл вниз.

Then recalling all the excitement and vindictiveness he had seen on all the faces, he felt sad; he made up his mind to go, and went downstairs.

Проходя через сени хор, он встретил ходившего взад и вперёд унылого гимназиста с подтекшими глазами.

As he passed through the entry to the galleries he met a dejected high school boy walking up and down with tired-looking eyes.

На лестнице же ему встретилась пара: дама, быстро бежавшая на каблучках, и лёгкий товарищ прокурора.

On the stairs he met a couple—a lady running quickly on her high heels and the jaunty deputy prosecutor.

–Я говорил вам, что не опоздаете, – сказал прокурор в то время, как Левин посторонился, пропуская даму.

“I told you you weren’t late,” the deputy prosecutor was saying at the moment when Levin moved aside to let the lady pass.

Левин уже был на выходной лестнице и доставал из жилетного кармана номерок своей шубы, когда секретарь поймал его.

Levin was on the stairs to the way out, and was just feeling in his waistcoat pocket for the number of his overcoat, when the secretary overtook him.

–Пожалуйте, Константин Дмитрич, баллотируют.

“This way, please, Konstantin Dmitrievitch; they are voting.”

В кандидаты баллотировался так решительно отказавшийся Неведовский.

The candidate who was being voted on was Nevyedovsky, who had so stoutly denied all idea of standing.

Левин подошёл к двери в залу: она была заперта.

Levin went up to the door of the room; it was locked.

Секретарь постучался, дверь отворилась, и навстречу Левину проюркнули два раскрасневшиеся помещика.

The secretary knocked, the door opened, and Levin was met by two red-faced gentlemen, who darted out.

–Мочи моей нет, – сказал один раскрасневшийся помещик.

“I can’t stand any more of it,” said one red-faced gentleman.

Вслед за помещиком высунулось лицо губернского предводителя.

After them the face of the marshal of the province was poked out.

Лицо это было страшно от изнеможения и страха.

His face was dreadful-looking from exhaustion and dismay.

–Я тебе сказал не выпускать! –

“I told you not to let anyone out!”

крикнул он сторожу.

he cried to the doorkeeper.

–Я впустил, ваше превосходительство!

“I let someone in, your excellency!”

–Господи! –

“Mercy on us!”

и, тяжело вздохнув, губернский предводитель, устало шмыгая в своих белых панталонах, опустив голову, пошёл по средине залы к большому столу.

and with a heavy sigh the marshal of the province walked with downcast head to the high table in the middle of the room, his legs staggering in his white trousers.

Неведовскому переложили, как и было рассчитано, и он был губернским предводителем.

Nevyedovsky had scored a higher majority, as they had planned, and he was the new marshal of the province.

Многие были веселы, многие были довольны, счастливы, многие в восторге, многие недовольны и несчастливы.

Many people were amused, many were pleased and happy, many were in ecstasies, many were disgusted and unhappy.

Губернский предводитель был в отчаянии, которого он не мог скрыть.

The former marshal of the province was in a state of despair, which he could not conceal.

Когда Неведовский пошёл из залы, толпа окружила его и восторженно следовала за ним, так же как она следовала в первый день за губернатором, открывшим выборы, и так же как она следовала за Снетковым, когда тот был выбран.

When Nevyedovsky went out of the room, the crowd thronged round him and followed him enthusiastically, just as they had followed the governor who had opened the meetings, and just as they had followed Snetkov when he was elected.
