Chapter 14

But at that very moment the princess came in.

На лице её изобразился ужас, когда она увидела их одних и их расстроенные лица.

There was a look of horror on her face when she saw them alone, and their disturbed faces.

Левин поклонился ей и ничего не сказал.

Levin bowed to her, and said nothing.

Кити молчала, не поднимая глаз.

Kitty did not speak nor lift her eyes.

«Слава Богу, отказала», – подумала мать, и лицо её просияло обычной улыбкой, с которою она встречала по четвергам гостей.

“Thank God, she has refused him,” thought the mother, and her face lighted up with the habitual smile with which she greeted her guests on Thursdays.

Она села и начала расспрашивать Левина о его жизни в деревне.

She sat down and began questioning Levin about his life in the country.

Он сел опять, ожидая приезда гостей, чтоб уехать незаметно.

He sat down again, waiting for other visitors to arrive, in order to retreat unnoticed.

Через пять минут вошла подруга Кити, прошлую зиму вышедшая замуж, графиня Нордстон.

Five minutes later there came in a friend of Kitty’s, married the preceding winter, Countess Nordston.

Это была сухая, жёлтая, с чёрными блестящими глазами, болезненная, нервная женщина.

She was a thin, sallow, sickly, and nervous woman, with brilliant black eyes.

Она любила Кити, и любовь её к ней, как и всегда любовь замужних к девушкам, выражалась в желании выдать Кити по своему идеалу счастья замуж, и потому желала выдать её за Вронского.

She was fond of Kitty, and her affection for her showed itself, as the affection of married women for girls always does, in the desire to make a match for Kitty after her own ideal of married happiness; she wanted her to marry Vronsky.

Левин, которого она в начале зимы часто у них встречала, был всегда неприятен ей.

Levin she had often met at the Shtcherbatskys’ early in the winter, and she had always disliked him.

Её постоянное и любимое занятие при встрече с ним состояло в том, чтобы шутить над ним.

Her invariable and favorite pursuit, when they met, consisted in making fun of him.

–Я люблю, когда он с высоты своего величия смотрит на меня: или прекращает свой умный разговор со мной, потому что я глупа, или снисходит. Я это очень люблю: снисходит до меня!

“I do like it when he looks down at me from the height of his grandeur, or breaks off his learned conversation with me because I’m a fool, or is condescending to me.

Я очень рада, что он меня терпеть не может, – говорила она о нем.

I like that so; to see him condescending! I am so glad he can’t bear me,” she used to say of him.

Она была права, потому что действительно Левин терпеть её не мог и презирал за то, чем она гордилась и что ставила себе в достоинство, – за её нервность, за её утонченное презрение и равнодушие ко всему грубому и житейскому.

She was right, for Levin actually could not bear her, and despised her for what she was proud of and regarded as a fine characteristic—her nervousness, her delicate contempt and indifference for everything coarse and earthly.

Между Нордстон и Левиным установилось то нередко встречающееся в свете отношение, что два человека, оставаясь по внешности в дружелюбных отношениях, презирают друг друга до такой степени, что не могут даже серьезно обращаться друг с другом и не могут даже быть оскорблены один другим.

The Countess Nordston and Levin got into that relation with one another not seldom seen in society, when two persons, who remain externally on friendly terms, despise each other to such a degree that they cannot even take each other seriously, and cannot even be offended by each other.

Графиня Нордстон тотчас же накинулась на Левина.

The Countess Nordston pounced upon Levin at once.

–А! Константин Дмитрич!

“Ah, Konstantin Dmitrievitch!

Опять приехали в наш развратный Вавилон, – сказала она, подавая ему крошечную жёлтую руку и вспоминая его слова, сказанные как-то в начале зимы, что Москва есть Вавилон. –

So you’ve come back to our corrupt Babylon,” she said, giving him her tiny, yellow hand, and recalling what he had chanced to say early in the winter, that Moscow was a Babylon.

Что, Вавилон исправился или вы испортились? –

“Come, is Babylon reformed, or have you degenerated?”

прибавила она, с усмешкой оглядываясь на Кити.

she added, glancing with a simper at Kitty.

–Мне очень лестно, графиня, что вы так помните мои слова, – отвечал Левин, успевший оправиться и сейчас же по привычке входя в своё шуточно-враждебное отношение к графине Нордстон. –

“It’s very flattering for me, countess, that you remember my words so well,” responded Levin, who had succeeded in recovering his composure, and at once from habit dropped into his tone of joking hostility to the Countess Nordston.

Верно, они на вас очень сильно действуют.

“They must certainly make a great impression on you.”

–Ах, как же!

“Oh, I should think so!

Я все записываю.

I always note them all down.

Ну что, Кити, ты опять каталась на коньках?..

Well, Kitty, have you been skating again?...”

И она стала говорить с Кити.

And she began talking to Kitty.

Как ни неловко было Левину уйти теперь, ему все-таки легче было сделать эту неловкость, чем остаться весь вечер и видеть Кити, которая изредка взглядывала на него и избегала его взгляда.

Awkward as it was for Levin to withdraw now, it would still have been easier for him to perpetrate this awkwardness than to remain all the evening and see Kitty, who glanced at him now and then and avoided his eyes.

Он хотел встать, но княгиня, заметив, что он молчит, обратилась к нему:

He was on the point of getting up, when the princess, noticing that he was silent, addressed him.

–Вы надолго приехали в Москву?

“Shall you be long in Moscow?

Ведь вы, кажется, мировым земством занимаетесь, и вам нельзя надолго.

You’re busy with the district council, though, aren’t you, and can’t be away for long?”

–Нет, княгиня, я не занимаюсь более земством, – сказал он. –

“No, princess, I’m no longer a member of the council,” he said.

Я приехал на несколько дней.

“I have come up for a few days.”

«Что-то с ним нынче особенное, – подумала графиня Нордстон, вглядываясь в его строгое, серьезное лицо, – что-то он не втягивается в свои рассуждения.

“There’s something the matter with him,” thought Countess Nordston, glancing at his stern, serious face. “He isn’t in his old argumentative mood.

Но я уж выведу его.

But I’ll draw him out.

Ужасно люблю сделать его дураком пред Кити, и сделаю».

I do love making a fool of him before Kitty, and I’ll do it.”

–Константин Дмитрич, – сказала она ему, – растолкуйте мне, пожалуйста, что такое значит, – вы всё это знаете, – у нас в калужской деревне все мужики и все бабы все пропили, что у них было, и теперь ничего нам не платят.

“Konstantin Dmitrievitch,” she said to him, “do explain to me, please, what’s the meaning of it. You know all about such things. At home in our village of Kaluga all the peasants and all the women have drunk up all they possessed, and now they can’t pay us any rent.

Что это значит?

What’s the meaning of that?

Вы так хвалите всегда мужиков.

You always praise the peasants so.”

В это время ещё дама вошла в комнату, и Левин встал.

At that instant another lady came into the room, and Levin got up.

–Извините меня, графиня, но я, право, ничего этого не знаю и ничего не могу вам сказать, – сказал он и оглянулся на входившего вслед за дамой военного.

“Excuse me, countess, but I really know nothing about it, and can’t tell you anything,” he said, and looked round at the officer who came in behind the lady.

«Это должен быть Вронский», – подумал Левин и, чтоб убедиться в этом, взглянул на Кити.

“That must be Vronsky,” thought Levin, and, to be sure of it, glanced at Kitty.

Она уже успела взглянуть на Вронского и оглянулась на Левина.

She had already had time to look at Vronsky, and looked round at Levin.

И по одному этому взгляду невольно просиявших глаз её Левин понял, что она любила этого человека, понял так же верно, как если б она сказала ему это словами.

And simply from the look in her eyes, that grew unconsciously brighter, Levin knew that she loved that man, knew it as surely as if she had told him so in words.

Но что же это за человек?

But what sort of a man was he?

Теперь, – хорошо ли это, дурно ли, – Левин не мог не остаться;

Now, whether for good or for ill, Levin could not choose but remain;

ему нужно было узнать, что за человек был тот, кого она любила.

he must find out what the man was like whom she loved.

Есть люди, которые, встречая своего счастливого в чем бы то ни было соперника, готовы сейчас же отвернуться от всего хорошего, что есть в нем, и видеть в нем одно дурное;

There are people who, on meeting a successful rival, no matter in what, are at once disposed to turn their backs on everything good in him, and to see only what is bad.

есть люди, которые, напротив, более всего желают найти в этом счастливом сопернике те качества, которыми он победил их, и ищут в нем со щемящею болью в сердце одного хорошего.

There are people, on the other hand, who desire above all to find in that lucky rival the qualities by which he has outstripped them, and seek with a throbbing ache at heart only what is good.

Левин принадлежал к таким людям.

Levin belonged to the second class.

Но ему нетрудно было отыскать хорошее и привлекательное во Вронском.

But he had no difficulty in finding what was good and attractive in Vronsky.

Оно сразу бросилось ему в глаза.

It was apparent at the first glance.

Вронский был невысокий, плотно сложенный брюнет, с добродушно-красивым, чрезвычайно спокойным и твёрдым лицом.

Vronsky was a squarely built, dark man, not very tall, with a good-humored, handsome, and exceedingly calm and resolute face.

В его лице и фигуре, от коротко обстриженных чёрных волос и свежевыбритого подбородка до широкого с иголочки нового мундира, все было просто и вместе изящно.

Everything about his face and figure, from his short-cropped black hair and freshly shaven chin down to his loosely fitting, brand-new uniform, was simple and at the same time elegant.

Дав дорогу входившей даме, Вронский подошёл к княгине и потом к Кити.

Making way for the lady who had come in, Vronsky went up to the princess and then to Kitty.

В то время как он подходил к ней, красивые глаза его особенно нежно заблестели, и с чуть заметною счастливою и скромно-торжествующею улыбкой (так показалось Левину), почтительно и осторожно наклонясь над нею, он протянул ей свою небольшую, но широкую руку.

As he approached her, his beautiful eyes shone with a specially tender light, and with a faint, happy, and modestly triumphant smile (so it seemed to Levin), bowing carefully and respectfully over her, he held out his small broad hand to her.

Со всеми поздоровавшись и сказав несколько слов, он сел, ни разу не взглянув на не спускавшего с него глаз Левина.

Greeting and saying a few words to everyone, he sat down without once glancing at Levin, who had never taken his eyes off him.

–Позвольте вас познакомить, – сказала княгиня, указывая на Левина. – Константин Дмитрич Левин.

“Let me introduce you,” said the princess, indicating Levin.

Граф Алексей Кириллович Вронский.

“Konstantin Dmitrievitch Levin, Count Alexey Kirillovitch Vronsky.”

Вронский встал и, дружелюбно глядя в глаза Левину, пожал ему руку.

Vronsky got up and, looking cordially at Levin, shook hands with him.

–Я нынче зимой должен был, кажется, обедать с вами, – сказал он, улыбаясь своею простою и открытою улыбкой, – но вы неожиданно уехали в деревню.

“I believe I was to have dined with you this winter,” he said, smiling his simple and open smile; “but you had unexpectedly left for the country.”

–Константин Дмитрич презирает и ненавидит город и нас, горожан, – сказала графиня Нордстон.

“Konstantin Dmitrievitch despises and hates town and us townspeople,” said Countess Nordston.

–Должно быть, мои слова на вас сильно действуют, что вы их так помните, – сказал Левин и, вспомнив, что он уже сказал это прежде, покраснел.

“My words must make a deep impression on you, since you remember them so well,” said Levin, and, suddenly conscious that he had said just the same thing before, he reddened.

Вронский взглянул на Левина и графиню Нордстон и улыбнулся.

Vronsky looked at Levin and Countess Nordston, and smiled.

–А вы всегда в деревне? –

“Are you always in the country?”

спросил он. –

he inquired.

Я думаю, зимой скучно?

“I should think it must be dull in the winter.”

–Не скучно, если есть занятия, да и с самим собой не скучно, – резко отвечал Левин.

“It’s not dull if one has work to do; besides, one’s not dull by oneself,” Levin replied abruptly.

–Я люблю деревню, – сказал Вронский, замечая и делая вид, что не замечал тона Левина.

“I am fond of the country,” said Vronsky, noticing, and affecting not to notice, Levin’s tone.

–Но надеюсь, граф, что вы бы не согласились жить всегда в деревне, – сказала графиня Нордстон.

“But I hope, count, you would not consent to live in the country always,” said Countess Nordston.

–Не знаю, я не пробовал подолгу.

“I don’t know; I have never tried for long.

Я испытал странное чувство, – продолжал он. –

I experienced a queer feeling once,” he went on.

Я нигде так не скучал по деревне, русской деревне, с лаптями и мужиками, как прожив с матушкой зиму в Ницце.

“I never longed so for the country, Russian country, with bast shoes and peasants, as when I was spending a winter with my mother in Nice.

Ницца сама по себе скучна, вы знаете.

Nice itself is dull enough, you know.

Да и Неаполь, Сорренто хороши только на короткое время.

And indeed, Naples and Sorrento are only pleasant for a short time.

И именно там особенно живо вспоминается Россия, и именно деревня.

And it’s just there that Russia comes back to me most vividly, and especially the country.

Они точно как…

It’s as though....”

Он говорил, обращаясь и к Кити и к Левину и переводя с одного на другого свой спокойный и дружелюбный взгляд, – говорил, очевидно, что приходило в голову.

He talked on, addressing both Kitty and Levin, turning his serene, friendly eyes from one to the other, and saying obviously just what came into his head.

Заметив, что графиня Нордстон хотела что-то сказать, он остановился, не досказав начатого, и стал внимательно слушать её.

Noticing that Countess Nordston wanted to say something, he stopped short without finishing what he had begun, and listened attentively to her.

Разговор не умолкал ни на минуту, так что старой княгине, всегда имевшей про запас, на случай неимения темы, два тяжёлые орудия: классическое и реальное образование и общую воинскую повинность, не пришлось выдвигать их, а графине Нордстон не пришлось подразнить Левина.

The conversation did not flag for an instant, so that the princess, who always kept in reserve, in case a subject should be lacking, two heavy guns—the relative advantages of classical and of modern education, and universal military service—had not to move out either of them, while Countess Nordston had not a chance of chaffing Levin.

Левин хотел и не мог вступить в общий разговор;

Levin wanted to, and could not, take part in the general conversation;

ежеминутно говоря себе: «теперь уйти», он не уходил, чего-то дожидаясь.

saying to himself every instant, “Now go,” he still did not go, as though waiting for something.

Разговор зашёл о вертящихся столах и духах, и графиня Нордстон, верившая в спиритизм, стала рассказывать чудеса, которые она видела.

The conversation fell upon table-turning and spirits, and Countess Nordston, who believed in spiritualism, began to describe the marvels she had seen.

–Ах, графиня, непременно свезите, ради Бога, свезите меня к ним!

“Ah, countess, you really must take me, for pity’s sake do take me to see them!

Я никогда ничего не видал необыкновенного, хотя везде отыскиваю, – улыбаясь, сказал Вронский.

I have never seen anything extraordinary, though I am always on the lookout for it everywhere,” said Vronsky, smiling.

–Хорошо, в будущую субботу, – отвечала графиня Нордстон. –

“Very well, next Saturday,” answered Countess Nordston.

Но вы, Константин Дмитрич, верите? –

“But you, Konstantin Dmitrievitch, do you believe in it?”

спросила она Левина.

she asked Levin.

–Зачем вы меня спрашиваете?

“Why do you ask me?

Ведь вы знаете, что я скажу.

You know what I shall say.”

–Но я хочу слышать ваше мнение.

“But I want to hear your opinion.”

–Моё мнение только то, – отвечал Левин, – что эти вертящиеся столы доказывают, что так называемое образованное общество не выше мужиков.

“My opinion,” answered Levin, “is only that this table-turning simply proves that educated society—so called—is no higher than the peasants.

Они верят в глаз, и в порчу, и в привороты, а мы…

They believe in the evil eye, and in witchcraft and omens, while we....”

–Что ж, вы не верите?

“Oh, then you don’t believe in it?”

–Не могу верить, графиня.

“I can’t believe in it, countess.”

–Но если я сама видела?

“But if I’ve seen it myself?”

–И бабы рассказывают, как они сами видели домовых.

“The peasant women too tell us they have seen goblins.”

–Так вы думаете, что я говорю неправду?

“Then you think I tell a lie?”

И она невесело засмеялась.

And she laughed a mirthless laugh.

–Да нет, Маша, Константин Дмитрич говорит, что он не может верить, – сказала Кити, краснея за Левина, и Левин понял это и, ещё более раздражившись, хотел отвечать, но Вронский со своею открытою весёлою улыбкой тотчас же пришёл на помощь разговору, угрожавшему сделаться неприятным.

“Oh, no, Masha, Konstantin Dmitrievitch said he could not believe in it,” said Kitty, blushing for Levin, and Levin saw this, and, still more exasperated, would have answered, but Vronsky with his bright frank smile rushed to the support of the conversation, which was threatening to become disagreeable.

–Вы совсем не допускаете возможности? –

“You do not admit the conceivability at all?”

спросил он. –

he queried.

Почему же мы допускаем существование электричества, которого мы не знаем;

“But why not? We admit the existence of electricity, of which we know nothing.

почему не может быть новая сила, ещё нам неизвестная, которая…

Why should there not be some new force, still unknown to us, which....”

–Когда найдено было электричество, – быстро перебил Левин, – то было только открыто явление, и неизвестно было, откуда оно происходит и что оно производит, и века прошли прежде, чем подумали о приложении его.

“When electricity was discovered,” Levin interrupted hurriedly, “it was only the phenomenon that was discovered, and it was unknown from what it proceeded and what were its effects, and ages passed before its applications were conceived.

Спириты же, напротив, начали с того, что столики им пишут и духи к ним приходят, а потом уже стали говорить, что это есть сила неизвестная.

But the spiritualists have begun with tables writing for them, and spirits appearing to them, and have only later started saying that it is an unknown force.”

Вронский внимательно слушал Левина, как он всегда слушал, очевидно интересуясь его словами.

Vronsky listened attentively to Levin, as he always did listen, obviously interested in his words.

–Да, но спириты говорят: теперь мы не знаем, что это за сила, но сила есть, и вот при каких условиях она действует.

“Yes, but the spiritualists say we don’t know at present what this force is, but there is a force, and these are the conditions in which it acts.

А учёные пускай разбирают, в чем состоит эта сила.

Let the scientific men find out what the force consists in.

Нет, я не вижу, почему это не может быть новая сила, если она…

No, I don’t see why there should not be a new force, if it....”

–А потому, – опять перебил Левин, – что при электричестве каждый раз, как вы потрёте смолу о шерсть, обнаруживается известное явление, а здесь не каждый раз, стало быть, это не природное явление.

“Why, because with electricity,” Levin interrupted again, “every time you rub tar against wool, a recognized phenomenon is manifested, but in this case it does not happen every time, and so it follows it is not a natural phenomenon.”

Вероятно, чувствуя, что разговор принимает слишком серьезный для гостиной характер, Вронский не возражал, а, стараясь переменить предмет разговора, весело улыбнулся и повернулся к дамам.

Feeling probably that the conversation was taking a tone too serious for a drawing-room, Vronsky made no rejoinder, but by way of trying to change the conversation, he smiled brightly, and turned to the ladies.

–Давайте сейчас попробуем, графиня, – начал он;

“Do let us try at once, countess,” he said;

но Левин хотел досказать то, что он думал.

but Levin would finish saying what he thought.

–Я думаю, – продолжал он, – что эта попытка спиритов объяснять свои чудеса какою-то новою силой – самая неудачная.

“I think,” he went on, “that this attempt of the spiritualists to explain their marvels as some sort of new natural force is most futile.

Они прямо говорят о силе духовной и хотят её подвергать материальному опыту.

They boldly talk of spiritual force, and then try to subject it to material experiment.”

Все ждали, когда он кончит, и он чувствовал это.

Everyone was waiting for him to finish, and he felt it.

–А я думаю, что вы будете отличный медиум, – сказала графиня Нордстон, – в вас есть что-то восторженное.

“And I think you would be a first-rate medium,” said Countess Nordston; “there’s something enthusiastic in you.”

Левин открыл рот, хотел сказать что-то, покраснел и ничего не сказал.

Levin opened his mouth, was about to say something, reddened, and said nothing.

–Давайте сейчас, княжна, испытаем столы, пожалуйста, – сказал Вронский. –

“Do let us try table-turning at once, please,” said Vronsky.

Княгиня, вы позволите?

“Princess, will you allow it?”

И Вронский встал, отыскивая глазами столик.

And Vronsky stood up, looking for a little table.

Кити встала за столиком и, проходя мимо, встретилась глазами с Левиным. Ей всею душой было жалко его, тем более что она жалела его в несчастии, которого сама была причиною.

Kitty got up to fetch a table, and as she passed, her eyes met Levin’s. She felt for him with her whole heart, the more because she was pitying him for suffering of which she was herself the cause.

«Если можно меня простить, то простите, – сказал её взгляд, – я так счастлива».

“If you can forgive me, forgive me,” said her eyes, “I am so happy.”

«Всех ненавижу, и вас, и себя», – отвечал его взгляд, и он взялся за шляпу.

“I hate them all, and you, and myself,” his eyes responded, and he took up his hat.

Но ему не судьба была уйти.

But he was not destined to escape.

Только что хотели устраиваться около столика, а Левин уйти, как вошёл старый князь и, поздоровавшись с дамами, обратился к Левину.

Just as they were arranging themselves round the table, and Levin was on the point of retiring, the old prince came in, and after greeting the ladies, addressed Levin.

–А! –

“Ah!”

начал он радостно. –

he began joyously.

Давно ли?

“Been here long, my boy?

Я и не знал, что ты тут.

I didn’t even know you were in town.

Очень рад вас видеть.

Very glad to see you.”

Старый князь иногда «ты», иногда «вы» говорил Левину. Он обнял Левина и, говоря с ним, не замечал Вронского, который встал и спокойно дожидался, когда князь обратится к нему.

The old prince embraced Levin, and talking to him did not observe Vronsky, who had risen, and was serenely waiting till the prince should turn to him.

Кити чувствовала, как после того, что произошло, любезность отца была тяжёла Левину.

Kitty felt how distasteful her father’s warmth was to Levin after what had happened.

Она видела также, как холодно отец её, наконец, ответил на поклон Вронского и как Вронский с дружелюбным недоумением посмотрел на её отца, стараясь понять и не понимая, как и за что можно было быть к нему недружелюбно расположенным, и она покраснела.

She saw, too, how coldly her father responded at last to Vronsky’s bow, and how Vronsky looked with amiable perplexity at her father, as though trying and failing to understand how and why anyone could be hostilely disposed towards him, and she flushed.

–Князь, отпустите нам Константина Дмитрича, – сказала графиня Нордстон. –

“Prince, let us have Konstantin Dmitrievitch,” said Countess Nordston;

Мы хотим опыт делать.

“we want to try an experiment.”

–Какой опыт?

“What experiment?

столы вертеть?

Table-turning?

Ну, извините меня, дамы и господа, но, по-моему, в колечко веселее играть, – сказал старый князь, глядя на Вронского и догадываясь, что он затеял это. –

Well, you must excuse me, ladies and gentlemen, but to my mind it is better fun to play the ring game,” said the old prince, looking at Vronsky, and guessing that it had been his suggestion.

В колечке ещё есть смысл.

“There’s some sense in that, anyway.”

Вронский посмотрел с удивлением на князя своими твёрдыми глазами и, чуть улыбнувшись, тотчас же заговорил с графиней Нордстон о предстоящем на будущей неделе большом бале.

Vronsky looked wonderingly at the prince with his resolute eyes, and, with a faint smile, began immediately talking to Countess Nordston of the great ball that was to come off next week.

–Я надеюсь, что вы будете? –

“I hope you will be there?”

обратился он к Кити.

he said to Kitty.

Как только старый князь отвернулся от него, Левин незаметно вышел, и последнее впечатление, вынесенное им с этого вечера, было улыбающееся, счастливое лицо Кити, отвечавшей Вронскому на его вопрос о бале.

As soon as the old prince turned away from him, Levin went out unnoticed, and the last impression he carried away with him of that evening was the smiling, happy face of Kitty answering Vronsky’s inquiry about the ball.
