Chapter 17

Гостиница губернского города, в которой лежал Николай Левин, была одна из тех губернских гостиниц, которые устраиваются по новым усовершенствованным образцам, с самыми лучшими намерениями чистоты, комфорта и даже элегантности, но которые по публике, посещающей их, с чрезвычайной быстротой превращаются в грязные кабаки с претензией на современные усовершенствования, и делаются этою самою претензией ещё хуже старинных, просто грязных гостиниц.

The hotel of the provincial town where Nikolay Levin was lying ill was one of those provincial hotels which are constructed on the newest model of modern improvements, with the best intentions of cleanliness, comfort, and even elegance, but owing to the public that patronizes them, are with astounding rapidity transformed into filthy taverns with a pretension of modern improvement that only makes them worse than the old-fashioned, honestly filthy hotels.

Гостиница эта уже пришла в это состояние; и солдат в грязном мундире, курящий папироску у входа, долженствовавший изображать швейцара, и чугунная, сквозная, мрачная и неприятная лестница, и развязный половой в грязном фраке, и общая зала с пыльным восковым букетом цветов, украшающим стол, и грязь, пыль и неряшество везде, и вместе какая-то новая современно железнодорожная самодовольная озабоченность этой гостиницы – произвели на Левиных после их молодой жизни самое тяжёлое чувство, в особенности тем, что фальшивое впечатление, производимое гостиницей, никак не мирилось с тем, что ожидало их.

This hotel had already reached that stage, and the soldier in a filthy uniform smoking in the entry, supposed to stand for a hall-porter, and the cast-iron, slippery, dark, and disagreeable staircase, and the free and easy waiter in a filthy frock coat, and the common dining-room with a dusty bouquet of wax flowers adorning the table, and filth, dust, and disorder everywhere, and at the same time the sort of modern up-to-date self-complacent railway uneasiness of this hotel, aroused a most painful feeling in Levin after their fresh young life, especially because the impression of falsity made by the hotel was so out of keeping with what awaited them.

Как всегда, оказалось, что после вопроса о том, в какую цену им угодно нумер, ни одного хорошего нумера не было: один хороший нумер был занят ревизором железной дороги, другой – адвокатом из Москвы, третий – княгинею Астафьевой из деревни.

As is invariably the case, after they had been asked at what price they wanted rooms, it appeared that there was not one decent room for them; one decent room had been taken by the inspector of railroads, another by a lawyer from Moscow, a third by Princess Astafieva from the country.

Оставался один грязный нумер, рядом с которым к вечеру обещали опростать другой.

There remained only one filthy room, next to which they promised that another should be empty by the evening.

Досадуя на жену за то, что сбывалось то, чего он ждал, именно то, что в минуту приезда, тогда как у него сердце захватывало от волнения при мысли о том, чтó с братом, ему приходилось заботиться о ней, вместо того чтобы бежать тотчас же к брату, Левин ввёл жену в отведённый им нумер.

Feeling angry with his wife because what he had expected had come to pass, which was that at the moment of arrival, when his heart throbbed with emotion and anxiety to know how his brother was getting on, he should have to be seeing after her, instead of rushing straight to his brother, Levin conducted her to the room assigned them.

–Иди, иди! –

“Go, do go!”

сказала она, робким, виноватым взглядом глядя на него.

she said, looking at him with timid and guilty eyes.

Он молча вышел из двери и тут же столкнулся с Марьей Николаевной, узнавшей о его приезде и не смевшей войти к нему.

He went out of the door without a word, and at once stumbled over Marya Nikolaevna, who had heard of his arrival and had not dared to go in to see him.

Она была точно такая же, какою он видел её в Москве: то же шерстяное платье и голые руки и шея и то же добродушно-тупое, несколько пополневшее, рябое лицо.

She was just the same as when he saw her in Moscow; the same woolen gown, and bare arms and neck, and the same good-naturedly stupid, pockmarked face, only a little plumper.

“Well, how is he?

how is he?”

“Very bad.

He can’t get up.

He has kept expecting you.

Are you ...

с супругой.

with your wife?”

Левин не понял в первую минуту того, что смущало её, но она тотчас же разъяснила ему.

Levin did not for the first moment understand what it was confused her, but she immediately enlightened him.

–Я уйду, я на кухню пойду, – выговорила она. –

“I’ll go away. I’ll go down to the kitchen,” she brought out.

Они рады будут.

“Nikolay Dmitrievitch will be delighted.

Они слышали, и их знают и помнят за границей.

He heard about it, and knows your lady, and remembers her abroad.”

Левин понял, что она разумела его жену, и не знал, что ответить.

Levin realized that she meant his wife, and did not know what answer to make.

–Пойдёмте, пойдёмте! –

“Come along, come along to him!”

сказал он.

he said.

Но только что он двинулся, дверь его нумера отворилась, и Кити выглянула.

But as soon as he moved, the door of his room opened and Kitty peeped out.

Левин покраснел и от стыда и от досады на свою жену, поставившую себя и его в это тяжёлое положение;

Levin crimsoned both from shame and anger with his wife, who had put herself and him in such a difficult position;

но Марья Николаевна покраснела ещё больше.

but Marya Nikolaevna crimsoned still more.

Она вся сжалась и покраснела до слез и, ухватив обеими руками концы платка, свёртывала их красными пальцами, не зная, что говорить и что делать.

She positively shrank together and flushed to the point of tears, and clutching the ends of her apron in both hands, twisted them in her red fingers without knowing what to say and what to do.

Первое мгновение Левин видел выражение жадного любопытства в том взгляде, которым Кити смотрела на эту непонятную для неё ужасную женщину;

For the first instant Levin saw an expression of eager curiosity in the eyes with which Kitty looked at this awful woman, so incomprehensible to her;

но это продолжалось только одно мгновение.

but it lasted only a single instant.

–Ну что же?

“Well!

Что же он? –

how is he?”

обратилась она к мужу и потом к ней.

she turned to her husband and then to her.

–Да нельзя же в коридоре разговаривать! –

“But one can’t go on talking in the passage like this!”

сказал Левин, с досадой оглядываясь на господина, который, подрагивая ногами, как будто по своему делу шёл в это время по коридору.

Levin said, looking angrily at a gentleman who walked jauntily at that instant across the corridor, as though about his affairs.

–Ну так войдите, – сказала Кити, обращаясь к оправившейся Марье Николаевне;

“Well then, come in,” said Kitty, turning to Marya Nikolaevna, who had recovered herself, but noticing her husband’s face of dismay, “or go on;

но, заметив испуганное лицо мужа, – или идите, идите и пришлите за мной, – сказала она и вернулась в нумер.

go, and then come for me,” she said, and went back into the room.

Левин пошёл к брату.

Levin went to his brother’s room.

Он никак не ожидал того, что он увидал и почувствовал у брата.

He had not in the least expected what he saw and felt in his brother’s room.

Он ожидал найти то же состояние самообманыванья, которое, он слыхал, так часто бывает у чахоточных и которое так сильно поразило его во время осеннего приезда брата.

He had expected to find him in the same state of self-deception which he had heard was so frequent with the consumptive, and which had struck him so much during his brother’s visit in the autumn.

Он ожидал найти физические признаки приближающейся смерти более определёнными, бóльшую слабость, бóльшую худобу, но все-таки почти то же положение.

He had expected to find the physical signs of the approach of death more marked—greater weakness, greater emaciation, but still almost the same condition of things.

Он ожидал, что сам испытает то же чувство жалости к утрате любимого брата и ужаса пред смертию, которое он испытал тогда, но только в большей степени.

He had expected himself to feel the same distress at the loss of the brother he loved and the same horror in face of death as he had felt then, only in a greater degree.

И он готовился на это;

And he had prepared himself for this;

но нашёл совсем другое.

but he found something utterly different.

В маленьком грязном нумере, заплёванном по раскрашенным панно стен, за тонкою перегородкой которого слышался говор, в пропитанном удушливым запахом нечистот воздухе, на отодвинутой от стены кровати лежало покрытое одеялом тело.

In a little dirty room with the painted panels of its walls filthy with spittle, and conversation audible through the thin partition from the next room, in a stifling atmosphere saturated with impurities, on a bedstead moved away from the wall, there lay covered with a quilt, a body.

Одна рука этого тела была сверх одеяла, и огромная, как грабли, кисть этой руки непонятно была прикреплена к тонкой и ровной от начала до середины длинной цевке.

One arm of this body was above the quilt, and the wrist, huge as a rake-handle, was attached, inconceivably it seemed, to the thin, long bone of the arm smooth from the beginning to the middle.

Голова лежала боком на подушке.

The head lay sideways on the pillow.

Левину видны были потные редкие волосы на висках и обтянутый, точно прозрачный лоб.

Levin could see the scanty locks wet with sweat on the temples and tense, transparent-looking forehead.

«Не может быть, чтоб это страшное тело был брат Николай», – подумал Левин.

“It cannot be that that fearful body was my brother Nikolay?” thought Levin.

Но он подошёл ближе, увидал лицо, и сомнение уже стало невозможно.

But he went closer, saw the face, and doubt became impossible.

Несмотря на страшное изменение лица, Левину стоило взглянуть в эти живые поднявшиеся на входившего глаза, заметить лёгкое движение рта под слипшимися усами, чтобы понять ту страшную истину, что это мёртвое тело было живой брат.

In spite of the terrible change in the face, Levin had only to glance at those eager eyes raised at his approach, only to catch the faint movement of the mouth under the sticky mustache, to realize the terrible truth that this death-like body was his living brother.

Блестящие глаза строго и укоризненно взглянули на входившего брата.

The glittering eyes looked sternly and reproachfully at his brother as he drew near.

И тотчас этим взглядом установилось живое отношение между живыми.

And immediately this glance established a living relationship between living men.

Левин тотчас же почувствовал укоризну в устремлённом на него взгляде и раскаяние за своё счастье.

Levin immediately felt the reproach in the eyes fixed on him, and felt remorse at his own happiness.

Когда Константин взял его за руку, Николай улыбнулся.

When Konstantin took him by the hand, Nikolay smiled.

Улыбка была слабая, чуть заметная, и, несмотря на улыбку, строгое выражение глаз не изменилось.

The smile was faint, scarcely perceptible, and in spite of the smile the stern expression of the eyes was unchanged.

–Ты не ожидал меня найти таким, – с трудом выговорил он.

“You did not expect to find me like this,” he articulated with effort.

–Да…

“Yes ...

нет, – говорил Левин, путаясь в словах. –

no,” said Levin, hesitating over his words.

Как же ты не дал знать прежде, то есть во время ещё моей свадьбы?

“How was it you didn’t let me know before, that is, at the time of my wedding?

Я наводил справки везде.

I made inquiries in all directions.”

Надо было говорить, чтобы не молчать, а он не знал, что говорить, тем более что брат ничего не отвечал, а только смотрел, не спуская глаз, и, очевидно, вникал в значение каждого слова.

He had to talk so as not to be silent, and he did not know what to say, especially as his brother made no reply, and simply stared without dropping his eyes, and evidently penetrated to the inner meaning of each word.

Левин сообщил брату, что жена его приехала с ним.

Levin told his brother that his wife had come with him.

Николай выразил удовольствие, но сказал, что боится испугать её своим положением.

Nikolay expressed pleasure, but said he was afraid of frightening her by his condition.

Наступило молчание.

A silence followed.

Вдруг Николай зашевелился и начал что-то говорить.

Suddenly Nikolay stirred, and began to say something.

Левин ждал чего-нибудь особенно значительного и важного по выражению его лица, но Николай заговорил о своём здоровье.

Levin expected something of peculiar gravity and importance from the expression of his face, but Nikolay began speaking of his health.

Он обвинял доктора, жалел, что нет московского знаменитого доктора, и Левин понял, что он все ещё надеялся.

He found fault with the doctor, regretting he had not a celebrated Moscow doctor. Levin saw that he still hoped.

Выбрав первую минуту молчания, Левин встал, желая избавиться хоть на минуту от мучительного чувства, и сказал, что пойдёт приведёт жену.

Seizing the first moment of silence, Levin got up, anxious to escape, if only for an instant, from his agonizing emotion, and said that he would go and fetch his wife.

–Ну, хорошо, а я велю подчистить здесь.

“Very well, and I’ll tell her to tidy up here.

Здесь грязно и воняет, я думаю.

It’s dirty and stinking here, I expect. Marya!

Маша! убери здесь, – с трудом сказал больной. –

clear up the room,” the sick man said with effort.

Да как уберёшь, сама уйди, – прибавил он, вопросительно глядя на брата.

“Oh, and when you’ve cleared up, go away yourself,” he added, looking inquiringly at his brother.

Левин ничего не ответил.

Levin made no answer.

Выйдя в коридор, он остановился.

Going out into the corridor, he stopped short.

Он сказал, что приведёт жену, но теперь, дав себе отчет в том чувстве, которое он испытывал, он решил, что, напротив, постарается уговорить её, чтоб она не ходила к больному.

He had said he would fetch his wife, but now, taking stock of the emotion he was feeling, he decided that he would try on the contrary to persuade her not to go in to the sick man.

«За что ей мучаться, как я?» –

“Why should she suffer as I am suffering?”

подумал он.

he thought.

–Ну, что? Как? –

“Well, how is he?”

с испуганным лицом спросила Кити.

Kitty asked with a frightened face.

–Ах, это ужасно, ужасно!

“Oh, it’s awful, it’s awful!

Зачем ты приехала? –

What did you come for?”

сказал Левин.

said Levin.

Кити помолчала несколько секунд, робко и жалостно глядя на мужа;

Kitty was silent for a few seconds, looking timidly and ruefully at her husband;

потом подошла и обеими руками взялась за его локоть.

then she went up and took him by the elbow with both hands.

–Костя!

“Kostya!

сведи меня к нему, нам легче будет вдвоём.

take me to him; it will be easier for us to bear it together.

Ты только сведи меня, сведи меня, пожалуйста, и уйди, – заговорила она. –

You only take me, take me to him, please, and go away,” she said.

Ты пойми, что мне видеть тебя и не видеть его тяжёлее гораздо.

“You must understand that for me to see you, and not to see him, is far more painful.

Там я могу быть, может быть, полезна тебе и ему.

There I might be a help to you and to him.

Пожалуйста, позволь! –

Please, let me!”

умоляла она мужа, как будто счастье жизни её зависело от этого.

she besought her husband, as though the happiness of her life depended on it.

Левин должен был согласиться, и, оправившись и совершенно забыв уже про Марью Николаевну, он опять с Кити пошёл к брату.

Levin was obliged to agree, and regaining his composure, and completely forgetting about Marya Nikolaevna by now, he went again in to his brother with Kitty.

Легко ступая и беспрестанно взглядывая на мужа и показывая ему храброе и сочувственное лицо, она вошла в комнату больного и, неторопливо повернувшись, бесшумно затворила дверь.

Stepping lightly, and continually glancing at her husband, showing him a valorous and sympathetic face, Kitty went into the sick-room, and, turning without haste, noiselessly closed the door.

Неслышными шагами она быстро подошла к одру больного и, зайдя так, чтоб ему не нужно было поворачивать головы, тотчас же взяла в свою свежую молодую руку остов его огромной руки, пожала её и с той, только женщинам свойственною, не оскорбляющею и сочувствующею тихою оживлённостью начала говорить с ним.

With inaudible steps she went quickly to the sick man’s bedside, and going up so that he had not to turn his head, she immediately clasped in her fresh young hand the skeleton of his huge hand, pressed it, and began speaking with that soft eagerness, sympathetic and not jarring, which is peculiar to women.

–Мы встречались, но не были знакомы, в Содене, – сказала она. –

“We have met, though we were not acquainted, at Soden,” she said.

Вы не думали, что я буду ваша сестра.

“You never thought I was to be your sister?”

–Вы бы не узнали меня? –

“You would not have recognized me?”

сказал он с просиявшею при её входе улыбкой.

he said, with a radiant smile at her entrance.

–Нет, я узнала бы.

“Yes, I should.

Как хорошо вы сделали, что дали нам знать!

What a good thing you let us know!
