Chapter 10

Песцов любил рассуждать до конца и не удовлетворился словами Сергея Ивановича, тем более, что он почувствовал несправедливость своего мнения.

Pestsov liked thrashing an argument out to the end, and was not satisfied with Sergey Ivanovitch’s words, especially as he felt the injustice of his view.

–Я никогда не разумел, – сказал он за супом, обращаясь к Алексею Александровичу, – одну густоту населения, но в соединении с основами, а не с принципами.

“I did not mean,” he said over the soup, addressing Alexey Alexandrovitch, “mere density of population alone, but in conjunction with fundamental ideas, and not by means of principles.”

–Мне кажется, – неторопливо и вяло отвечал Алексей Александрович, – что это одно и то же.

“It seems to me,” Alexey Alexandrovitch said languidly, and with no haste, “that that’s the same thing.

По моему мнению, действовать на другой народ может только тот, который имеет высшее развитие, который…

In my opinion, influence over another people is only possible to the people which has the higher development, which....”

–Но в том и вопрос, – перебил своим басом Песцов, который всегда торопился говорить и, казалось, всегда всю душу полагал на то, о чем он говорил, – в чем полагать высшее развитие?

“But that’s just the question,” Pestsov broke in in his bass. He was always in a hurry to speak, and seemed always to put his whole soul into what he was saying. “In what are we to make higher development consist?

Англичане, французы, немцы, – кто стоит на высшей степени развития?

The English, the French, the Germans, which is at the highest stage of development?

Кто будет национализовать один другого?

Which of them will nationalize the other?

Мы видим, что Рейн офранцузился, а немцы не ниже стоят! –

We see the Rhine provinces have been turned French, but the Germans are not at a lower stage!”

кричал он. –

Тут есть другой закон!

“There is another law at work there.”

–Мне кажется, что влияние всегда на стороне истинного образования, – сказал Алексей Александрович, слегка поднимая брови.

“I fancy that the greater influence is always on the side of true civilization,” said Alexey Alexandrovitch, slightly lifting his eyebrows.

–Но в чем же мы должны полагать признаки истинного образования? –

“But what are we to lay down as the outward signs of true civilization?”

сказал Песцов.

said Pestsov.

–Я полагаю, что признаки эти известны, – сказал Алексей Александрович.

“I imagine such signs are generally very well known,” said Alexey Alexandrovitch.

–Вполне ли они известны? –

“But are they fully known?”

с тонкою улыбкой вмешался Сергей Иванович. –

Sergey Ivanovitch put in with a subtle smile.

Теперь признано, что настоящее образование может быть только чисто классическое;

“It is the accepted view now that real culture must be purely classical;

но мы видим ожесточённые споры той и другой стороны, и нельзя отрицать, чтоб и противный лагерь не имел сильных доводов в свою пользу.

but we see most intense disputes on each side of the question, and there is no denying that the opposite camp has strong points in its favor.”

–Вы классик, Сергей Иванович.

“You are for classics, Sergey Ivanovitch.

Прикажете красного? –

Will you take red wine?”

сказал Степан Аркадьич.

said Stepan Arkadyevitch.

–Я не высказываю своего мнения о том и другом образовании, – с улыбкой снисхождения, как к ребёнку, сказал Сергей Иванович, подставляя свой стакан, – я только говорю, что обе стороны имеют сильные доводы, – продолжал он, обращаясь к Алексею Александровичу. –

“I am not expressing my own opinion of either form of culture,” Sergey Ivanovitch said, holding out his glass with a smile of condescension, as to a child.

Я классик по образованию, но в споре этом я лично не могу найти своего места.

“I only say that both sides have strong arguments to support them,” he went on, addressing Alexey Alexandrovitch. “My sympathies are classical from education, but in this discussion I am personally unable to arrive at a conclusion.

Я не вижу ясных доводов, почему классическим наукам дано преимущество пред реальными.

I see no distinct grounds for classical studies being given a preeminence over scientific studies.”

–Естественные имеют столь же педагогически-развивательное влияние, – подхватил Песцов. –

“The natural sciences have just as great an educational value,” put in Pestsov.

Возьмите одну астрономию, возьмите ботанику, зоологию с её системой общих законов!

“Take astronomy, take botany, or zoology with its system of general principles.”

–Я не могу вполне с этим согласиться, – отвечал Алексей Александрович. – Мне кажется, что нельзя не признать того, что самый процесс изучения форм языков особенно благотворно действует на духовное развитие.

“I cannot quite agree with that,” responded Alexey Alexandrovitch “It seems to me that one must admit that the very process of studying the forms of language has a peculiarly favorable influence on intellectual development.

Кроме того, нельзя отрицать и того, что влияние классических писателей в высшей степени нравственное, тогда как, к несчастью, с преподаванием естественных наук соединяются те вредные и ложные учения, которые составляют язву нашего времени.

Moreover, it cannot be denied that the influence of the classical authors is in the highest degree moral, while, unfortunately, with the study of the natural sciences are associated the false and noxious doctrines which are the curse of our day.”

Сергей Иванович хотел что-то сказать, но Песцов своим густым басом перебил его.

Sergey Ivanovitch would have said something, but Pestsov interrupted him in his rich bass.

Он горячо начал доказывать несправедливость этого мнения.

He began warmly contesting the justice of this view.

Сергей Иванович спокойно дожидался слова, очевидно с готовым победительным возражением.

Sergey Ivanovitch waited serenely to speak, obviously with a convincing reply ready.

–Но, – сказал Сергей Иванович, тонко улыбаясь и обращаясь к Каренину, – нельзя не согласиться, что взвесить вполне все выгоды и невыгоды тех и других наук трудно и что вопрос о том, какие предпочесть, не был бы решён так скоро и окончательно, если бы на стороне классического образования не было того преимущества, которое вы сейчас высказали: нравственного – disons le mot 💬 – антинигилистического влияния.

“But,” said Sergey Ivanovitch, smiling subtly, and addressing Karenin, “One must allow that to weigh all the advantages and disadvantages of classical and scientific studies is a difficult task, and the question which form of education was to be preferred would not have been so quickly and conclusively decided if there had not been in favor of classical education, as you expressed it just now, its moral— disons le mot —anti-nihilist influence.”

–Без сомнения.

“Undoubtedly.”

–Если бы не было этого преимущества антинигилистического влияния на стороне классических наук, мы бы больше подумали, взвесили бы доводы обеих сторон, – с тонкою улыбкой говорил Сергей Иванович, – мы бы дали простор тому и другому направлению.

“If it had not been for the distinctive property of anti-nihilistic influence on the side of classical studies, we should have considered the subject more, have weighed the arguments on both sides,” said Sergey Ivanovitch with a subtle smile, “we should have given elbow-room to both tendencies.

Но теперь мы знаем, что в этих пилюлях классического образования лежит целебная сила антинигилизма, и мы смело предлагаем их нашим пациентам…

But now we know that these little pills of classical learning possess the medicinal property of anti-nihilism, and we boldly prescribe them to our patients....

А что, как нет и целебной силы? –

But what if they had no such medicinal property?”

заключил он, высыпая аттическую соль.

he wound up humorously.

При пилюлях Сергея Ивановича все засмеялись, и в особенности громко и весело Туровцын, дождавшийся, наконец, того смешного, чего он только и ждал, слушая разговор.

At Sergey Ivanovitch’s little pills, everyone laughed; Turovtsin in especial roared loudly and jovially, glad at last to have found something to laugh at, all he ever looked for in listening to conversation.

Степан Аркадьич не ошибся, пригласив Песцова.

Stepan Arkadyevitch had not made a mistake in inviting Pestsov.

С Песцовым разговор умный не мог умолкнуть ни на минуту.

With Pestsov intellectual conversation never flagged for an instant.

Только что Сергей Иванович заключил разговор своей шуткой, Песцов тотчас поднял новый.

Directly Sergey Ivanovitch had concluded the conversation with his jest, Pestsov promptly started a new one.

–Нельзя согласиться даже с тем, – сказал он, – чтобы правительство имело эту цель.

“I can’t agree even,” said he, “that the government had that aim.

Правительство, очевидно, руководствуется общими соображениями, оставаясь индифферентным к влияниям, которые могут иметь принимаемые меры.

The government obviously is guided by abstract considerations, and remains indifferent to the influence its measures may exercise.

Например, вопрос женского образования должен бы был считаться зловредным, но правительство открывает женские курсы и университеты.

The education of women, for instance, would naturally be regarded as likely to be harmful, but the government opens schools and universities for women.”

И разговор тотчас же перескочил на новую тему женского образования.

And the conversation at once passed to the new subject of the education of women.

Алексей Александрович выразил мысль о том, что образование женщин обыкновенно смешивается с вопросом о свободе женщин и только поэтому может считаться вредным.

Alexey Alexandrovitch expressed the idea that the education of women is apt to be confounded with the emancipation of women, and that it is only so that it can be considered dangerous.

–Я, напротив, полагаю, что эти два вопроса неразрывно связаны, – сказал Песцов, – это ложный круг.

“I consider, on the contrary, that the two questions are inseparably connected together,” said Pestsov; “it is a vicious circle.

Женщина лишена прав по недостатку образования, а недостаток образования происходит от отсутствия прав.

Woman is deprived of rights from lack of education, and the lack of education results from the absence of rights.

Надо не забывать того, что порабощение женщин так велико и старо, что мы часто не хотим понимать ту пучину, которая отделяет их от нас, – говорил он.

We must not forget that the subjection of women is so complete, and dates from such ages back that we are often unwilling to recognize the gulf that separates them from us,” said he.

–Вы сказали – права, – сказал Сергей Иванович, дождавшись молчания Песцова, – права занимания должностей присяжных, гласных, председателей управ, права служащего, члена парламента…

“You said rights,” said Sergey Ivanovitch, waiting till Pestsov had finished, “meaning the right of sitting on juries, of voting, of presiding at official meetings, the right of entering the civil service, of sitting in parliament....”

–Без сомнения.

“Undoubtedly.”

–Но если женщины, как редкое исключение, и могут занимать эти места, то, мне кажется, вы неправильно употребили выражение «права».

“But if women, as a rare exception, can occupy such positions, it seems to me you are wrong in using the expression ‘rights.’

Вернее бы было сказать: обязанности.

It would be more correct to say duties.

Всякий согласится, что, исполняя какую-нибудь должность присяжного, гласного, телеграфного чиновника, мы чувствуем, что исполняем обязанность.

Every man will agree that in doing the duty of a juryman, a witness, a telegraph clerk, we feel we are performing duties.

И потому вернее выразиться, что женщины ищут обязанностей, и совершенно законно.

And therefore it would be correct to say that women are seeking duties, and quite legitimately.

И можно только сочувствовать этому их желанию помочь общему мужскому труду.

And one can but sympathize with this desire to assist in the general labor of man.”

–Совершенно справедливо, – подтвердил Алексей Александрович. –

“Quite so,” Alexey Alexandrovitch assented.

Вопрос, я полагаю, состоит только в том, способны ли они к этим обязанностям.

“The question, I imagine, is simply whether they are fitted for such duties.”

–Вероятно, будут очень способны, – вставил Степан Аркадьич, – когда образование будет распространено между ними.

“They will most likely be perfectly fitted,” said Stepan Arkadyevitch, “when education has become general among them.

Мы это видим…

We see this....”

–А пословица? –

“How about the proverb?”

сказал князь, давно уж прислушиваясь к разговору и блестя своими маленькими насмешливыми глазами, – при дочерях можно: волос долог…

said the prince, who had a long while been intent on the conversation, his little comical eyes twinkling. “I can say it before my daughter: her hair is long, because her wit is....”

–Точно так же думали о неграх до их освобождения! –

“Just what they thought of the negroes before their emancipation!”

сердито сказал Песцов.

said Pestsov angrily.

–Я нахожу только странным, что женщины ищут новых обязанностей, – сказал Сергей Иванович, – тогда как мы, к несчастью, видим, что мужчины обыкновенно избегают их.

“What seems strange to me is that women should seek fresh duties,” said Sergey Ivanovitch, “while we see, unhappily, that men usually try to avoid them.”

–Обязанности сопряжены с правами;

“Duties are bound up with rights—power, money, honor;

власть, деньги, почести: их-то ищут женщины, – сказал Песцов.

those are what women are seeking,” said Pestsov.

–Все равно, что я бы искал права быть кормилицей и обижался бы, что женщинам платят, а мне не хотят, – сказал старый князь.

“Just as though I should seek the right to be a wet-nurse and feel injured because women are paid for the work, while no one will take me,” said the old prince.

Туровцын разразился громким смехом, и Сергей Иванович пожалел, что не он сказал это.

Turovtsin exploded in a loud roar of laughter and Sergey Ivanovitch regretted that he had not made this comparison.

Даже Алексей Александрович улыбнулся.

Even Alexey Alexandrovitch smiled.

–Да, но мужчина не может кормить, – сказал Песцов, – а женщина…

“Yes, but a man can’t nurse a baby,” said Pestsov, “while a woman....”

–Нет, англичанин выкормил на корабле своего ребёнка, – сказал старый князь, позволяя себе эту вольность разговора при своих дочерях.

“No, there was an Englishman who did suckle his baby on board ship,” said the old prince, feeling this freedom in conversation permissible before his own daughters.

–Сколько таких англичан, столько же и женщин будет чиновников, – сказал уже Сергей Иванович.

“There are as many such Englishmen as there would be women officials,” said Sergey Ivanovitch.

–Да, но что же делать девушке, у которой нет семьи? –

“Yes, but what is a girl to do who has no family?”

вступился Степан Аркадьич, вспоминая о Чибисовой, которую он все время имел в виду, сочувствуя Песцову и поддерживая его.

put in Stepan Arkadyevitch, thinking of Masha Tchibisova, whom he had had in his mind all along, in sympathizing with Pestsov and supporting him.

–Если хорошенько разобрать историю этой девушки, то вы найдёте, что эта девушка бросила семью, или свою, или сестрину, где бы она могла иметь женское дело, – неожиданно вступая в разговор, сказала с раздражительностью Дарья Александровна, вероятно догадываясь, какую девушку имел в виду Степан Аркадьич.

“If the story of such a girl were thoroughly sifted, you would find she had abandoned a family—her own or a sister’s, where she might have found a woman’s duties,” Darya Alexandrovna broke in unexpectedly in a tone of exasperation, probably suspecting what sort of girl Stepan Arkadyevitch was thinking of.

–Но мы стоим за принцип, за идеал! – звучным басом возражал Песцов. –

“But we take our stand on principle as the ideal,” replied Pestsov in his mellow bass.

Женщина хочет иметь право быть независимою, образованною.

“Woman desires to have rights, to be independent, educated.

Она стеснена, подавлена сознанием невозможности этого.

She is oppressed, humiliated by the consciousness of her disabilities.”

–А я стеснён и подавлен тем, что меня не примут в кормилицы в воспитательный дом, – опять сказал старый князь, к великой радости Туровцына, со смеху уронившего спаржу толстым концом в соус.

“And I’m oppressed and humiliated that they won’t engage me at the Foundling,” the old prince said again, to the huge delight of Turovtsin, who in his mirth dropped his asparagus with the thick end in the sauce.
