Алексей Александрович одержал блестящую победу в заседании комиссии семнадцатого августа, но последствия этой победы подрезали его.
Alexey Alexandrovitch had gained a brilliant victory at the sitting of the Commission of the 17th of August, but in the sequel this victory cut the ground from under his feet.
Новая комиссия для исследования во всех отношениях быта инородцев была составлена и отправлена на место с необычайною, возбуждаемою Алексеем Александровичем быстротой и энергией.
The new commission for the inquiry into the condition of the native tribes in all its branches had been formed and despatched to its destination with an unusual speed and energy inspired by Alexey Alexandrovitch.
Через три месяца был представлен отчет.
Within three months a report was presented.
Быт инородцев был исследован в политическом, административном, экономическом, этнографическом, материальном и религиозном отношениях.
The condition of the native tribes was investigated in its political, administrative, economic, ethnographic, material, and religious aspects.

To all these questions there were answers admirably stated, and answers admitting no shade of doubt, since they were not a product of human thought, always liable to error, but were all the product of official activity.

And this solution was in favor of Alexey Alexandrovitch’s contention.
Но Стремов, чувствуя себя задетым за живое в последнем заседании, употребил при получении донесений комиссии неожиданную Алексеем Александровичем тактику.
But Stremov, who had felt stung to the quick at the last sitting, had, on the reception of the commission’s report, resorted to tactics which Alexey Alexandrovitch had not anticipated.
Стремов, увлёкши за собой некоторых других членов, вдруг перешёл на сторону Алексея Александровича и с жаром не только защищал приведение в действие мер, предлагаемых Карениным, но и предлагал другие крайние в том же духе.
Stremov, carrying with him several members, went over to Alexey Alexandrovitch’s side, and not contenting himself with warmly defending the measure proposed by Karenin, proposed other more extreme measures in the same direction.
Меры эти, усиленные ещё против того, что было основною мыслью Алексея Александровича, были приняты, и тогда обнажилась тактика Стремова.
These measures, still further exaggerated in opposition to what was Alexey Alexandrovitch’s fundamental idea, were passed by the commission, and then the aim of Stremov’s tactics became apparent.
Меры эти, доведённые до крайности, вдруг оказались так глупы, что в одно и то же время и государственные люди, и общественное мнение, и умные дамы, и газеты – все обрушилось на эти меры, выражая своё негодование и против самих мер, и против их признанного отца, Алексея Александровича.
Carried to an extreme, the measures seemed at once to be so absurd that the highest authorities, and public opinion, and intellectual ladies, and the newspapers, all at the same time fell foul of them, expressing their indignation both with the measures and their nominal father, Alexey Alexandrovitch.
Стремов же отстранился, делая вид, что он только слепо следовал плану Каренина и теперь сам удивлен и возмущен тем, что сделано.
Stremov drew back, affecting to have blindly followed Karenin, and to be astounded and distressed at what had been done.
Это подрезало Алексея Александровича.
This meant the defeat of Alexey Alexandrovitch.
Но, несмотря на падающее здоровье, несмотря на семейные горести, Алексей Александрович не сдавался.
But in spite of failing health, in spite of his domestic griefs, he did not give in.
В комиссии произошёл раскол.
There was a split in the commission.
Одни члены со Стремовым во главе оправдывали свою ошибку тем, что они поверили ревизионной, руководимой Алексеем Александровичем комиссии, представившей донесение, и говорили, что донесение этой комиссии есть вздор и только исписанная бумага.
Some members, with Stremov at their head, justified their mistake on the ground that they had put faith in the commission of revision, instituted by Alexey Alexandrovitch, and maintained that the report of the commission was rubbish, and simply so much waste paper.
Алексей Александрович с партией людей, видевших опасность такого революционного отношения к бумагам, продолжал поддерживать данные, выработанные ревизионною комиссией.
Alexey Alexandrovitch, with a following of those who saw the danger of so revolutionary an attitude to official documents, persisted in upholding the statements obtained by the revising commission.
Вследствие этого в высших сферах и даже в обществе все спуталось, и, несмотря на то, что всех это крайне интересовало, никто не мог понять, действительно ли бедствуют и погибают инородцы, или процветают.
In consequence of this, in the higher spheres, and even in society, all was chaos, and although everyone was interested, no one could tell whether the native tribes really were becoming impoverished and ruined, or whether they were in a flourishing condition.
Положение Алексея Александровича вследствие этого и отчасти вследствие павшего на него презрения за неверность его жены стало весьма шатко.
The position of Alexey Alexandrovitch, owing to this, and partly owing to the contempt lavished on him for his wife’s infidelity, became very precarious.
И в этом положении Алексей Александрович принял важное решение.
And in this position he took an important resolution.
Он, к удивлению комиссии, объявил, что он будет просить разрешения самому ехать на место для исследования дела.
To the astonishment of the commission, he announced that he should ask permission to go himself to investigate the question on the spot.
И, испросив разрешение, Алексей Александрович отправился в дальние губернии.
And having obtained permission, Alexey Alexandrovitch prepared to set off to these remote provinces.
Отъезд Алексея Александровича наделал много шума, тем более что он при самом отъезде официально возвратил при бумаге прогонные деньги, выданные ему, на двенадцать лошадей для проезда до места назначения.
Alexey Alexandrovitch’s departure made a great sensation, the more so as just before he started he officially returned the posting-fares allowed him for twelve horses, to drive to his destination.
–Я нахожу, что это очень благородно, – говорила про это Бетси с княгиней Мягкою. –
“I think it very noble,” Betsy said about this to the Princess Myakaya.
Зачем выдавать на почтовых лошадей, когда все знают, что везде теперь железные дороги?
“Why take money for posting-horses when everyone knows that there are railways everywhere now?”
Но княгиня Мягкая была несогласна, и мнение княгини Тверской даже раздражило её.
But Princess Myakaya did not agree, and the Princess Tverskaya’s opinion annoyed her indeed.
–Вам хорошо говорить, – сказала она, – когда у вас миллионы я не знаю какие, а я очень люблю, когда муж ездит ревизовать летом.
“It’s all very well for you to talk,” said she, “when you have I don’t know how many millions; but I am very glad when my husband goes on a revising tour in the summer.
Ему очень здорово и приятно проехаться, а у меня уж так заведено, что на эти деньги у меня экипаж и извозчик содержатся.
It’s very good for him and pleasant traveling about, and it’s a settled arrangement for me to keep a carriage and coachman on the money.”
Проездом в дальние губернии Алексей Александрович остановился на три дня в Москве.
On his way to the remote provinces Alexey Alexandrovitch stopped for three days at Moscow.
На другой день своего приезда он поехал с визитом к генерал-губернатору.
The day after his arrival he was driving back from calling on the governor-general.
На перекрёстке у Газетного переулка, где всегда толпятся экипажи и извозчики, Алексей Александрович вдруг услыхал своё имя, выкрикиваемое таким громким и весёлым голосом, что он не мог не оглянуться.
At the crossroads by Gazetoy Place, where there are always crowds of carriages and sledges, Alexey Alexandrovitch suddenly heard his name called out in such a loud and cheerful voice that he could not help looking round.
На углу тротуара, в коротком модном пальто, с короткою модною шляпою набекрень, сияя улыбкой белых зуб между красными губами, весёлый, молодой, сияющий, стоял Степан Аркадьич, решительно и настоятельно кричавший и требовавший остановки.
At the corner of the pavement, in a short, stylish overcoat and a low-crowned fashionable hat, jauntily askew, with a smile that showed a gleam of white teeth and red lips, stood Stepan Arkadyevitch, radiant, young, and beaming. He called him vigorously and urgently, and insisted on his stopping.
Он держался одною рукой за окно остановившейся на углу кареты, из окна которой высовывались женская голова в бархатной шляпе и две детские головки, и улыбался и манил рукой зятя.
He had one arm on the window of a carriage that was stopping at the corner, and out of the window were thrust the heads of a lady in a velvet hat, and two children. Stepan Arkadyevitch was smiling and beckoning to his brother-in-law.
Дама улыбалась доброю улыбкой и тоже махала рукой Алексею Александровичу.
The lady smiled a kindly smile too, and she too waved her hand to Alexey Alexandrovitch.
Это была Долли с детьми.
It was Dolly with her children.
Алексей Александрович никого не хотел видеть в Москве, а менее всего брата своей жены.
Alexey Alexandrovitch did not want to see anyone in Moscow, and least of all his wife’s brother.
Он приподнял шляпу и хотел проехать, но Степан Аркадьич велел его кучеру остановиться и подбежал к нему чрез снег.
He raised his hat and would have driven on, but Stepan Arkadyevitch told his coachman to stop, and ran across the snow to him.
–Ну как не грех не прислать сказать!
“Well, what a shame not to have let us know!
давно ли?
Been here long?
А я вчера был у Дюссо и вижу на доске «Каренин», а мне и в голову не пришло, что это ты! – говорил Степан Аркадьич, всовываясь с головой в окно кареты. – А то я бы зашёл.
I was at Dussots’ yesterday and saw ‘Karenin’ on the visitors’ list, but it never entered my head that it was you,” said Stepan Arkadyevitch, sticking his head in at the window of the carriage, “or I should have looked you up.
Как я рад тебя видеть! –
I am glad to see you!”
говорил он, похлопывая ногу об ногу, чтобы отряхнуть с них снег. –
he said, knocking one foot against the other to shake the snow off.
Как не грех не дать знать! –
“What a shame of you not to let us know!”
повторил он.
he repeated.
–Мне некогда было, я очень занят, – сухо ответил Алексей Александрович.
“I had no time; I am very busy,” Alexey Alexandrovitch responded dryly.
–Пойдём же к жене, она так хочет тебя видеть.
“Come to my wife, she does so want to see you.”
Алексей Александрович развернул плед, под которым были закутаны его зябкие ноги, и, вылезши из кареты, пробрался чрез снег к Дарье Александровне.
Alexey Alexandrovitch unfolded the rug in which his frozen feet were wrapped, and getting out of his carriage made his way over the snow to Darya Alexandrovna.
–Что же это, Алексей Александрович, за что вы нас так обходите? –
“Why, Alexey Alexandrovitch, what are you cutting us like this for?”
сказала Долли, грустно улыбаясь.
said Dolly, smiling.
–Я очень занят был.
“I was very busy.
Очень рад вас видеть, – сказал он тоном, который ясно говорил, что он огорчен этим. –
Delighted to see you!” he said in a tone clearly indicating that he was annoyed by it.
Как ваше здоровье?
“How are you?”
–Ну, что моя милая Анна?
“Tell me, how is my darling Anna?”
Алексей Александрович промычал что-то и хотел уйти.
Alexey Alexandrovitch mumbled something and would have gone on.
Но Степан Аркадьич остановил его.
But Stepan Arkadyevitch stopped him.
–А вот что мы сделаем завтра.
“I tell you what we’ll do tomorrow.
Долли, зови его обедать!
Dolly, ask him to dinner.
Позовём Кознышева и Песцова, чтоб его угостить московскою интеллигенцией.
We’ll ask Koznishev and Pestsov, so as to entertain him with our Moscow celebrities.”
–Так, пожалуйста, приезжайте, – сказала Долли, – мы вас будем ждать в пять, шесть часов, если хотите.
“Yes, please, do come,” said Dolly; “we will expect you at five, or six o’clock, if you like.
Ну, что моя милая Анна?
How is my darling Anna?
Как давно…
How long....”
–Она здорова, – хмурясь, промычал Алексей Александрович. –
“She is quite well,” Alexey Alexandrovitch mumbled, frowning.
Очень рад! –
“Delighted!”
и он направился к своей карете.
and he moved away towards his carriage.
–Будете? –
“You will come?”
прокричала Долли.
Dolly called after him.
Алексей Александрович проговорил что-то, чего Долли не могла расслышать в шуме двигавшихся экипажей.
Alexey Alexandrovitch said something which Dolly could not catch in the noise of the moving carriages.
–Я завтра заеду! –
“I shall come round tomorrow!”
прокричал ему Степан Аркадьич.
Stepan Arkadyevitch shouted to him.
Алексей Александрович сел в карету и углубился в неё так, чтобы не видать и не быть видимым.
Alexey Alexandrovitch got into his carriage, and buried himself in it so as neither to see nor be seen.
–Чудак! –
“Queer fish!”
сказал Степан Аркадьич жене и, взглянув на часы, сделал пред лицом движение рукой, означающее ласку жене и детям, и молодецки пошёл по тротуару.
said Stepan Arkadyevitch to his wife, and glancing at his watch, he made a motion of his hand before his face, indicating a caress to his wife and children, and walked jauntily along the pavement. “Stiva! Stiva!”
–Стива! Стива! – закричала Долли, покраснев.
Dolly called, reddening.
Он обернулся.
He turned round.
–Мне ведь нужно пальто Грише купить и Тане.
“I must get coats, you know, for Grisha and Tanya.
Дай же мне денег!
Give me the money.”
–Ничего, ты скажи, что я отдам, – и он скрылся, весело кивнув головой проезжавшему знакомому.
“Never mind; you tell them I’ll pay the bill!” and he vanished, nodding genially to an acquaintance who drove by.
Непременно приезжай нынче ко мне обедать.
You simply must come to dinner with us today.
Брат твой будет, Каренин, мой зять, будет.
Your brother’s coming, and Karenin, my brother-in-law.”
– Разве он здесь? –
“You don’t mean to say he’s here?”
сказал Левин и хотел спросить про Кити.
said Levin, and he wanted to inquire about Kitty.
Он слышал, что она была в начале зимы в Петербурге у своей сестры, жены дипломата, и не знал, вернулась ли она, или нет, но раздумал расспрашивать.
He had heard at the beginning of the winter that she was at Petersburg with her sister, the wife of the diplomat, and he did not know whether she had come back or not; but he changed his mind and did not ask.
«Будет, не будет – все равно».
“Whether she’s coming or not, I don’t care,” he said to himself.
– Так приедешь?
“So you’ll come?”
– Ну, разумеется.
“Of course.”
– Так в пять часов и в сюртуке.
“At five o’clock, then, and not evening dress.”
И Степан Аркадьич встал и пошёл вниз к новому начальнику.
And Stepan Arkadyevitch got up and went down below to the new head of his department.
Инстинкт не обманул Степана Аркадьича.
Instinct had not misled Stepan Arkadyevitch.
Новый страшный начальник оказался весьма обходительный человек, и Степан Аркадьич позавтракал с ним и засиделся так, что только в четвёртом часу попал к Алексею Александровичу.
The terrible new head turned out to be an extremely amenable person, and Stepan Arkadyevitch lunched with him and stayed on, so that it was four o’clock before he got to Alexey Alexandrovitch.
