Subject: уточнить по месту расположение огнетушителей уточнить по месту

IMHO: Make on-site corrections to fire extinguishers placing. |
а если Location of fire extinguishers to be specified on-site? |
Ну а где же повелительное наклонение и действительный залог? |
Зачем придерживаться действительного залога? конструкция to be done - часто используется нашими экспатами для выражения должествования приблизительно равно shall be Why not? |
2 askandy: “хочу полемики” -be careful what you wish for… While, generally, passive voice is best avoided, it has its uses. For example, passive voice is appropriate when you want to emphasize the thing acted on rather than the person acting (which is clearly the case). Therefore, “Location/placement of fire extinguishers IS* to be specified/determined on-site/ on location” seems to be the logical choice. * Every sentence in English must have both a subject and a verb. If a sentence lacks either of them or contains a subordinating word making the clause dependent rather than independent, it is a fragment. In good writing, fragments are to be avoided (with few exceptions). · “Location of fire extinguishers to be specified on-site” is an incomplete sentence; it lacks a verb (is) ** “Make on-site corrections to fire extinguishers placing” is too imperative for a sentence torn out of its context. Ten-four says it is a list (or maybe instruction of some sort?). But we don’t know for SURE if it is. Therefore, Аскеры не жалейте заварки! |
жаль, я в пятницу раньше ушел и не смог продолжить обсуждение. Спасибо за мнения Game и 10-4. По поводу опускания глагола (в данном случае IS)- я, разумеется, понимаю, что конструкция без этого глагола seems incomplete, nevertheless - такая "укоротченная" конструкция таки часто мне встречается в императивных предложениях (чаще всего "буллетированые" списки ). |
Yes, in a bulleted list, fragments are acceptable ( you did not say it was a bulleted list, did you?). Besides, why do you call your sentence imperative. Ten-four's sentence was imperative, not yours. In sentences of this (yours) type, omission of a verb is a common mistake even for native speakers, as described in numerous how-to-write-well books. |
Ok. To sum it up, one can skip the verb (in the case at hand ‘IS’) if we deal with a list composed of fragments, and it won’t be a mistake. As for the imperative shade of meaning, I meant the source phrase, i.e. Russian, which was imperative indeed (уточнить по месту). I tend to translate such ‘action plans’ using this very structure ‘to be done (finished, purchased…)’. Although the imperative spirit might get lost, a modal meaning does remain, which is all I need to render the idea that the issue at hand needs attention of those responsible for the respective performance. |
Дело ясное что дело темное. Иду спать. Прошу не беспокоить... Шуткую, I am always game to serve humanity. :-))) |
OK ))) The end of discussion. |
